its not opening its just they have a raffle for 30 minutes and they have alot of extra stuff she said they dont want to raffle for an hour so they figure maybe i could think of a game to give away prizes to make it more fun than just calling out numbers to see if you won. anyways doesnt matter to me im going to charge them the same to dj or to play musical chairs maybe even a little extra since i may have to be on the mike for a little while. but no big deal to me i think it is a good idea if i could just think of some good games that i can watch and maybe get a laugh out of. a swift so your telling me you would turn down 600.00 because a company asked you if you could do one or 2 games to get ride of some prizes as it is im going to be getting paid while they are doing a raffle on my dj time

Company parties sound like weddings to me, a bunch of old and young people forced together to party for no reason and none of them are fully happy with the music because the old people dont like new stuff and the young people dont like elvis ha ha.

honestly man, if they asked me last minute after it was already booked, i'd do it since i couldnt book something else that quick. but if they came to me a month in advance and said, we need you to do this party, play some music and come up with some fun games, i'd say 'you'd be better off with someone who specializes in that kind of thing',.. and i guarantee i'd book that date for a gig that did not require any hokey pokey or chicken dance skills.

yeah they called me today the job is for the 16 i already turned a possible job down because i was booked so i didnt really want to risk loosing this one. and honestly the way i look at it if im going to get paid the same if not even more than sure i come up with a game or 2 not like there asking me to be in it i just get to watch and maybe play some background music if the games dont require musice and hopefully get a few laughs no harm no foul no reason i can see myself turning down a gig. if anything games may come in hand to kill time or for a future gig or event like halloween or something. but i can understand if you just stricktly into playing music for 5 or 6 hours i just look at the raffle and games as a paid break. and as a dj that is very rare. unless ur playing pre mixed cd's

I'm with a-Swift on this one. I no longer do gigs that want me to "play games", doesn't matter how much they're willing to pay. I got into djing because it was a hobby. The second it starts feeling like work (and playing those wacky games is work to me)I'm done.

maybe later on down the future i can turn down gigs i wont really have fun at but i have 2 daughters 18 months and 3 months also have a wife to support and looking to move to texas that combined with the holidays means i will most jobs and not be pickey. i dont like doing quincerias or however you spell them its boring for me and work but no way am i in the position to turn down 500.00 for 4 -6 hours of work the way i look at it some people work 40 to 50 hours a week to make that kinda money i will gladly take it even if i am going to be playing music or games that im not really looking foward to. i got into djing because i love music and i love money. so i have plenty of time to play the music i want to here while im at home or here at work(dad owns a gym i spin at when i feel like it) but to each his own everyone does things for there own raeson but i know that the parties that usually want me to play the music i like such as hip hop freestyle flash back oldschool dont really pay 400-500 a night they usually want budget dj's/bedroom microwave dj's.but made props to u and a-swift for sticking to your guns and not doing anything you dont want to. some day i hope to be in that kinda financial position were i can turn down any gig i please.

Amen to that, However they can still be fun. We did a Corp Christmas Party for the Federal Reserves Bank this past weekend. At the beginning of the night no-one danced. The only thing that worked during the early hour was line dancing.. Once the alcohol kicked in it was a different story.. At the end of the night the lady in charge of the party came to us and said we kicked a$$. On previous years the place was usually empty by 11:00pm this Year we had to tell them to leave at 12:30am. Needless to say we are booked for next year's party. Oh, no games just music and raffles. I’d post pics, but being the FRB no cameras were allowed.

I do "Levi's" corporate xmas party every year, where they rent out a well known club spot in San Fran on a thurs or fri nite. Never been asked to come up with games for people to win presents, etc.
Your a DJ, not a Gameshow host!!! The raffle can be done by throwing on some instrumental track and having you or some drunk CEO at the party play MC to call out the winning numbers.
If your the one on the mic, add in this: next raffle tix winner gets a free ride on the DJ's MIC.....
Just kidding

Word, you're the DJ playing the music, not their nanny or nurse.
Unless you are playing those games - but then... are you the DJ? Are you getting paid to DJ or to play games? You cant play those games if you want people to take you seriously about DJing.
Absolutely.

Yea...it's unrealistic to want to be a mobile DJ and not have to do these types of things. If you want to just be a club DJ, fine, just play clubs and you'll never have to worry about it...but if you want to get into the kind of money you get for doing weddings and company parties etc...you have to accept the fact that you aren't just there to play music. You have to be able to do all sorts of things that aren't required of the average club dj.

Personally... I dont think there is anything wrong with it. You want to play games - yeah, why not. If that helps paying your bills its all fine. But obviously you are taking those game-gigs cause you aint getting others. Thats what you said earlier.
Well then, dont run around call others weak asses, dont say that they aint getting no gigs, when its you who is trading being a game-host against a dj gig where its only about you and your djing skills.
(I dont mean you, Michael Basic)

If you are asked to play games and you have games that are fitting for the situation and people are willing to play... The definiton of a game is to pass time and be fun.. DJ'ing in it's own right is sorta fun or you wouldn't be doing it. Those that are gunshy or feel that they do not have a public announcement voice on the mic may immediantly assume games suck and the vocal interaction is just not their strong point. In company of adults I do just fine, but the little kid scrutiny really rattles me for some reason. (I feel the little rat bastards would rather be pantsing the fat kid down the street while listening to their ipod). It's in those times when speaking on the mic, when you feel yourself failing that you really would like to go and hide or just pack up your shit and bail. There is an expectation that you have a mic as a mobile dj and that also means that if you upacked it, you best have it plugged in and be ready to annouce 'the red car licaense plate number "UFUGN8IT" is about to be towed by the cops', you get on that, atleast that dude will be grateful to you.

well does how bout this you have a corp party willing to pay 650 for 5 hours but you have to play 30 minutes of games and raffle or you have the choice of dj for a house party for 400.00 or you can dj for a club for 200.00 what choice are u going to make????? ill take the 650 and play 30 minutes of games over playing at a club for 200 and you probably wont even get asked for a buisness card

I do that all the time, even when there isn't a raffle, i just point to chicks in the crowd and scream "YOU'RE THE WIIIIIIINER!"
In regards to this post, screw that. You're the DJ at a corporate event, not the daddy a kids B-day party (yes I know you're banned but I'm talking to anyone who's seeing this guys point) Announcing raffle's, fine...but it's not up to you to invent games and shit. Talk to the event planner (I'm assuming that's who your liason is for this gig) It's up to them to come up with all that crapyou're just there to spin music and announce a few stupid things during the night.

I think I'd even try to draw the line at a large corporate event as being the GAME MEISTER, let the HR group handle the games (surely on of those big mouthed bossy broards would love to get spot light time and make as ass of herself) and if they need a mic and want to run the clock out, while you stand there playing background tunes... I say - LET'M DO IT !!!!

haha well i did the event on sat and of course the hr lady was a loud fat girl who though she was the shit. funny u say that. but as far as games go they were asking if i knew any good ones maybe ones that other companies had done or ones that i might know about. not meaning that im going to be in charge but basically looking for ideas. out of the 5 hours i played 2 hours was dinner music and 45 minutes was using my mic not having to play any music and than the rest was all me spinning. so hey if there gonna call me a game show host or a dj i dont care give me my 650 for really only playing about 1 and a half hours of music. shit if they want they can even call me the janitor

Just dont freaking call others "you dont get gigs" when its obviously you dont getting better gigs so you *have* to take those where you gotta put the red hat on your head to play the game show host. You sacrificed yourself. You said you making enough money on the other thread. Then you say in this thread you need the money. Hustle. Blabla. You are contradicting yourself, just in case nobody has told you before.
And please, dont take it back to that name-calling level. Thanks.
