External Hard Drive Suggestions

I am sure this has been posted and addressed already, but I want to buy an external hard drive that is out-of-the-box formatted for both PC and Mac. I recently reformatted my Maxtor hard drive as FAT32 so that I can move and BPM music files between my Dell desktop and MacBook and while both computers could read and write on the external, it crashed SSL consistently on my Mac. Someone then mentioned to me that if you buy a drive that works on both out-of-the-box, then I should not have any problems. Could someone confirm this for me and possibly recommend a drives? I bought one just to move music and it worked on both out-of-the-box, but I didn't like the drive (and no firewire) so I returned it and never attempted to use it with SSL.

I think it makes *much* more sense to network the computers, and format the drive to the native type used on the computer that it's usually connected to.

If you're DJ-ing with the Macbook, that means you should format the drive as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

Networking computers is too easy to be wasting time and reliability by physically swapping drives around.

i would format the drive as HFS+ so it will be native for mac, then use MacDrive from www.mediafour.com to make the drive accessible on the PC. that software seems much more stable than the mac's own ability to read/write fat32.

Yeah, I've been slacking on getting the computers networked -- we have 5 altogether. I do want to eventually get a backup drive so I just though it made more sense to get one that I could swap between PC and Mac and especially when DJing in the club when I might not have my MacBook with me and someone's using a PC. I'll look into the MacDrive, but everything Mac is so expensive.
