TTM 57SL Phantom Power Question

DJJorel 12:39 AM 21 March 2010
Just a quick question...forgive my ignorance...

If I plug my 57SL into a PA mixer where only XLR inputs are available, and the PA mixer has a switch that turns phantom power on and off for the all those inputs, will it damage my 57 if I use those inputs on the PA mixer while phantom power is switched on?

My first guess is that it WILL damage the mixer but I'd contact the PA mixer manufacturer and Rane customer service. Mackie on references how it will affect microphones but I wouldn't risk it. I have done it before by accident (TTM56) but I didn't leave it on long enough (a few minutes) to say safely if it will be safe.

The XLR outputs on the back of the TTM57SL are balanced, line-level signals. There is no need to ''preamp'' these Master Booth Outputs, like one would need to with a mic whether it required 48V Phantom Power or not. It sounds like this PA mixer is only for low-level transducers/mics. Are you sure there aren't Line Inputs on this PA mixer? I'd be more worried about your PA mixer being overloaded, than your TTM57SL. You've already spent a good chunk of change on a Rane, professional quality DJ mixer, maybe you should find a PA mixer that better suits your needs :-p

It was at a small venue where they had an in house system. The line inputs were taken (he said he couldn't remove them) and all he had were a couple of XLR inputs.

I was just wondering what would have happened if i used those XLRs. When he went to the kitchen to tend to something, I removed the inputs that the karaoke system was using and used them for my 57.

Phantom power is a very low voltage needed by most condenser mics in order to work. It will not harm your 57. Most p.a. mixers come with Phantom Power. Really big p.a. mixers have the option Phantom selected channels. One Phantom Power button for very ten channels or so, or two buttons, one for each half of the mixer.

I have had Phantom power turned on using XLR outputs on my mixer, (which is way cheaper then a 57)

I've done that every month for a year now, and no problems. so i would say go for it.
