I'm experiencing extremely slow response and very jumpy playback and display. I have a brand new MacBook Pro, 2.53 ghz processor with 4 g Ram with OSx 1.6.2, using serato vinyl on Rane 57 mixer and Serato v 1.9.2. The strange thing about the problem is that it doesn't happen immediately upon powering on Laptop or Mixer, the problem begins to happen after about an hour of use, and becomes progressively worse so that at the end of a 5 hour set it is nearly unusable except for the most basic functions. This happens on several different 57 mixers, so the problem is NOT the mixer. This problem started occuring about 3 weeks ago and has become more severe, but was NOT a problem when I first bought the computer about 3 months ago. I have removed and reinstalled the Serato software and same problem. I have considered re-installing the OS but this seems like a drastic measure I would like to avoid.

Hello Hope,

If you put the virtual decks in INT mode when this problem starts does the sound clear up?
Do you still see circles in the scope views?
What tracking percentage are you getting (found in the lower right corner of each scope view)?

Let me know and we'll go from there;)

what is most strange about this problem is that even in internal mode, the jumpiness still occurs when i either bring the crossfader over or bring one of the channels from 0 up. In other words if I bring the channel up from 0 (either the channel playing or the channel that isn't), I see the visual display of both decks jump once as SOON as I bring it up. If I bring the crossfader over I see the same thing. And if i try to move the crossfader back and forth to do a scratch, the display jumps, the playback sounds choppy and the tracking of the vinyl I'm moving back and forth goes to crap. I don't think it can possibly be a tracking problem with the vinyl or anthing like that (although I don't want to rule out anything that might solve the problem). If I move the record back and forth in a normal manner without operating the crossfader or channel, it tracks relatively normal although seems a little slow to respond. The first thing I always check when I have playback problems is the tracking, and I don't see any problem with it. I have tried different vinyl, different needles with no change. I have shown this to several other djs who like me have been on Serato for 4-5 years and who play 4-5 nites a week and NONE of them has ever seen anything like this.

Ok.. if the issue is still happening when playing on INT mode then its not going to be due to tracking.
It sounds like its gonna be a computer related problem.

If it plays fine for a certain amount of time this might be due to your computer overheating.

Try downloading and using --> www.bresink.com.
See if your computer starts acting up once it reaches a certain temperature.

You could also try repairing your disk permissions via the Disc Utilities option located in your Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Simply click your hard drive icon and choose to 'repair disk permissions'.
Once its done repairing do it a second time.

Let us know your findings.

Thanks for the advice. I have already done the repair disk permissions several times. I will download the temperature software and monitor that too. I'm gonna get myself a cool pad for my laptop too and see if that helps. I had thought about temperature too, for the same reason: it would seem that if the problem gets worse the longer the computer is on logically it would seem that temp would be a factor. But just seems strange that with a brand new laptop it would be a problem when I never had this problem with my old Mac Book which had a slower processor and less RAM. But worth a try. Thanks for your time and I will advise as to the results.

Problem definitely NOT solved...worse even. I bought a cool pad and monitored the temp all night. Temp never went above 72C...not unreasonable as far as I know. And there seems to be NO correlation between temp and onset of problem. It started about 1 1/2 hours after I fired the computer up, began subtly and got progressively worse. By the end of the night this program was nearly unusable for anything other than cueing and very basic beat mixing. I guess my only option is the nuclear bomb of reformatting my drive and re-installing everything.

Ok...still a problem. Here's some updates. I was using a new MBPro when the problem first developed. Unfortunately, that machine had problems and eventually wouldn't boot so I brought it to Apple store and was forced to use my old Mac Book for playing while waiting for a new machine from Apple. I copied over all my new music files and my new iTunes playlist into the old Mac Book and it performed without a problem at all. The new audio files and iTunes library were the ONLY things I transferred into the old MB. Then (my bad luck lately) the MacBook shut down on me and I had to replace the Hard Drive. I then used a Time Machine backup of the new Mac Book Pro to fill the new Hard Drive in the old MacBook. And NOW THE SAME PROBLEM IS OCCURRING IN THE OLD MAC BOOK AND IT WAS NEVER THERE BEFORE!! Does this shed any light on where the problem may be coming from??? HELP!!!!

hi dj hope,

Try creating a new user and log in as that user to test.

Any luck?
