DJ A-TRAK AND TRAVIS BARKER, WOW!

DJBLISS89 8:22 AM - 17 March, 2010
I have to say that I didn't think A-Trak could fill DJ AM's shoes, reasons:

1. DJ AM is my idol, RIP, and did an amazing job with Travis Barker
2. A-Trak is a legend in my opinion, but I didn't think he would have the song selection to pull it off with barker...(side note, me and my friends met were DJ'n a concert for our school with Aoki and A Trak, Aoki was sooooo chill, but A-Trak kind of came off as a douche, but maybe he's just like that to strangers, o well)

But he's def doin his thing with Barker, check out all the vids posted on youtube, here are some:

Is A-Trak the new AM? (in terms of popularity and being known by the general public)
DJBLISS89 8:23 AM - 17 March, 2010
and if A Trak is the new AM, thats great news for the DJ community, definitely better than the oh so popular Pauly D haha

as far as general public...nope
typerel 8:47 PM - 17 March, 2010
robot rock with live drums sounded amazing, duck sauce with drums, not so good
dj-freestyle 9:32 PM - 17 March, 2010
ok am was cool but a-trak is by far a way better dj. no suprise there. am was cool people but there were way better dj's out there. period.

Chad S. 9:51 PM - 17 March, 2010
Pretty cool performance. I like that it bridges the gap from band to dj. That will lead to more acceptance of the dj culture. Pure win.
HYDRO MATIC 9:54 PM - 17 March, 2010
Im just worried they wont progress to the intergration that AM and Travis were able to...routines and interaction areas...right now its just a really dope (although loud) drummer with a really dope DJ...I think with A-Trak there are more possibilities but his schedule is super hectic and more time consuming the AM's...
Plus Travis and AM were friends first (I believe) and Im sure that helped with the collab process...

But for the record I am a huge fan of A-trak and have been for 10 or 11 years, I just want to see them push the envelope together like they both have separately...
wrosenbl12 1:54 AM - 18 March, 2010
when AM was with travis...it was mostly AM dropping dope tracks with occasional scratches and clean transitions. sinces a-trak is a beast when it comes to cutting i'd like to see the turntables used more as an instrument.
Billy18bm 4:50 AM - 18 March, 2010
I just think AM brought more "heaters" to the table. than A-trak.. It's almost not comparable. granted that robot rock juggle was sick, but i prefer AM and travis just becuase of the music selection...
DJROBsf1 4:54 AM - 18 March, 2010
Hmmmm
DJ Mr. $ 1:19 PM - 18 March, 2010
if a pure skill perspective a-trak might be better than AM, and I am a huge fan of AM. AM's strength in my oppinion was that he was creative with his track selection and combining that with some dope scratches. A-Trak is just amazing when it comes to turntableism. I've never heard a mainstream a-trak club mix (gonna watch these videos now)

It would be great for the DJ community if A-Trak starts getting more spotlight and people start wanting to see DJ's who could actually DJ
Dj-M.Bezzle 1:38 PM - 18 March, 2010
from the vids and interviews ive seen i dont think a-trak has the personality AM had, A-tracks kinda a scratch nerd and dosent really seem to have an interest in rubbin elbows with celebs so i dout hell get AM status
djchope 2:18 PM - 18 March, 2010
im going to be at there show tonight, at republic live..it should be off the chain
anyone know what time they play?
HYDRO MATIC 2:28 PM - 18 March, 2010
man A-trak is HILARIOUS!!!! incredible amounts of fun to kick it with...I just dont think he gets off on the whole who you are thing though...plus he is Canadian ay??? lol
vega 3:43 PM - 18 March, 2010
cool vids.

love a-trak.. but is just me, or has his scratching gotten sloppier over the years?? back in the dmc days he was so on point.. he doesn't sound as clean nowadays compared to back then
phate 3:51 PM - 18 March, 2010
a-trak is amazing !! not only is he one of the top electro house dj's in the game, he has the dj skills to match. He won the DMC's at 15 and was the first dj EVER to win all 3 majors (DMC, ITF and vestax)

plus hes a super cool funny guy, got the chance to do a show with him a few years ago

am was awesome and i have mad respect for him, but technically no where near as good of dj as a-trak
dj-freestyle 4:09 PM - 18 March, 2010
Thank you tech wise a-trac is amazeing, i loved am but no wear close tech wise.

thats because when he was practicing for the DMCs hed practice the same set over and over and over for like 15 hours a day till it was perfect, when your doin a live set or doing something with another artist its going to be a bit sloppier

Yes that would be the best thing! The DJ community needs him to step into the spotlight...if his music selection is as good as shown in the vids posted above, I got no problem with him being the new "IT" DJ, and itll show younger people like me that skill is a major aspect that one needs to make it, instead of just putting people on the guest list ha

ya listent to any top scratch dj doing a imprompt mix, normally not as clean
vega 4:26 PM - 19 March, 2010
yea word, i dunno.. guess its jsut me then.

I see Craze around Miami all the time, and his scratching is still on point always like back in dmc days.
Dj-M.Bezzle 4:30 PM - 19 March, 2010
does craze do normal club gigs or does he do scratch apperances (not being sarcastic i really havent heard much about what hes doin now)
HYDRO MATIC 4:34 PM - 19 March, 2010
^^^^yeah he really dosent do appearances anymore mainly club gigs...he still uses heavy turntabalism with his style but its more in line with a regular club dj flow wise
Dj-M.Bezzle 4:41 PM - 19 March, 2010
see if he still does heavyu turtablism i bet hes still practicin like crazy, i read an interview with a-trak where he was talkin about how when he got signed on as kaynes tour dj he had to learn to NOT be a turntablist cause it went over the crowds head and he dumbed down his routines.....i would guess hes not really practicin hardcore routines anymore since thats not the direction hes going....not where the moneys at
Hassle 5:01 PM - 19 March, 2010
boring as shit
DJ Greg J 5:29 PM - 19 March, 2010
AM was way better. It's not even comparable.

I do not understand the jocking at all, most of the scratching in this footage is pretty weak sauce for a former DMC champ, and most if not all of the song transitions are lacking. I'm sure he can do way better, but a whole lot of this doesn't sound good at all and AM always sounded mint.

It's all about how it sounds dudes. People in general, regular people, jocked the shit out of AM scratching because it SOUNDED good. Most of this scratching probably sounds noisy and obnoxious to average people. I'm sure they'll polish it up and be dope someday, but I think it's NAGL for them and maybe even for DJ'ing in general to have come out of the blocks like this.
HYDRO MATIC 6:37 PM - 19 March, 2010
^^^^I have lost all respect for your opinion ... everything you wrote ... with the expception of maybe the fact that Atrak isnt what he used to be in that clip but it fits the vibe ... Your answer wreaks of FANBOYISM...
dj-freestyle 6:54 PM - 19 March, 2010
Just wow, what was dude thinking and talk about just plain confused. :)

the difference between the am barker videos and these is in the am vids cameras are on him pretty much the whole time with glances over to barker, this seamed like all barker with glances over to a-trak... just sayin
Dj-M.Bezzle 8:33 PM - 19 March, 2010
i think barker and AM practiced together alot longer than barker and a-trak

seen it live, its pretty awesome
not his best juggle hes done, but its up there
Henry GQ 9:51 PM - 19 March, 2010
i think it would be better if those guys were able to keep the drum tracks out of the dj side of it and let travis be the beat....

dont get me wrong. i love this kind of stuff.. butotherwise, its just a drummer and a dj..
they need to produce tracks or remixes that make the show very unique. t should all be acapella coming from atrks side.. and it would be super cool if he was able to play the keyboard. being able to bounce from keyboard to turntables and sampling would be a fuckin show!
Dj-M.Bezzle 9:53 PM - 19 March, 2010
they should find a way to incorporate juggling too...not beat juggling but with like oranges or swords or something, also a bear on a unicycle is NEVER a bad way to set a show off
Henry GQ 9:59 PM - 19 March, 2010
haha

if you want to see comedy go see pauly d dj. A-Trak is one of the best. I'm sure he and Travis will get comfotable together and rock it out.

I also heard Jazzy Jeff will be touring with Kid Capri. Honeslty, I respect Capri a lot but he is a HUGE step down from AM. Would love to see Jeff and Spinbad (NY) doing a 4 table set, would be dope.
Henry GQ 10:31 PM - 19 March, 2010
i think jeff and spryte or even vice would be a bad ass combo!
Henry GQ 10:34 PM - 19 March, 2010
i was actually thinkin of booking jeff for a summer show..

i wanna do something with a regular dj, and then a video dj... a rock band, a country band and a urban act...

this way u attract all kinds of peeps into one show... anyone ever see something like this ?
djchrischip 10:35 PM - 19 March, 2010
jeff/vice, jeff/ spinbad would b the best
djchope 11:04 PM - 19 March, 2010
the show was amazing, i saw A-track crossing the road and i hit him up we talked a little and i gave him a little demo i had with some remixes he was cool (i got pics hahah)
i also met with Donnis, he opened for a-track and travis barker, that dude is fucking cool

I was once knocked off my ass by A-track back right after he was doing the DMC thing. And so it pains me to say it, but everything I've seen afterward is just not quite as good. It's got to be hard, when people compare you to your old self all the time. He just set the bar sooooo high.

Either these video's are not doing A-track justice or he's slacking. I'll wait for more to come before making a firm opinion. And Barker is a good drummer as always. I hope to see more DJ drummer combos in the future. What I'd really like to see is a DJ and Jaw harp combo, that be hillbilleriffic.
Dj-M.Bezzle 6:51 PM - 9 July, 2010
The new videos arent as good techincally but theres a reason for that. I read an interview where he was talking about going on tour with kayne and when he would do his part of the show he would do his complex DMC type routine and he said people would just stare at him like WTF was that. He said so much of it went over their head he ended up having to dumb up his routines so that the crowd would acutual be entertained by what he was doing even though its not as technically advanced as a dj would want to see watching the show
HYDRO MATIC 8:07 PM - 9 July, 2010
^^^^
isnt that the case with all technical arts???

When my academy does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu demos we do a bunch of flying take-downs and throws versus when I compete it usually the small details that when tournaments...

I heard A-Trak's fireman juggl. I loved it. Then I started listening to more of A-Trak and he just doesn't do it for me. Also, what's up with comparing A-Trak to AM? AM's track selection alone would kill A-Trak.
DJ Lewshis 9:55 PM - 9 July, 2010

AM was a great DJ but A-Trak was and is a prodigy... He may not do the really technical juggles much any more but his cutting at 16 was better than anything AM ever did, and he's still getting better.

yeah like i said AM was a great DJ and could rock shit a hell of a lot better that 99% of DJs in the world, but i just don't think he was in the same league as A-Trak skill wise... rocking a crowd is totally different to writing routines and having the skill to pull them off...

and A-Trak is one of the few turntablists IMO that can take it to a live situation and rock shit tight enough for it to hold a dancefloor...

and like i said... at 15 A-Trak was tighter than AM ever was...
