Application Hang

Product Video-SL Hardware - Computer PC
Version Video-SL
Scratch Live
Platform - OS Windows 7

Hi,

I am using a Dell Inspiron 1545, 500GB HD, 4GB Ram, Windows 7 Ultimate.

The issue happens with both SL1.92 and SL 2.0 beta. It also happends with and without the SL interface connected and not connected on the PC.

Every once in a while while using Scratch Live with the Video SL plugin the application seems to hang and a windows message with the following description pops up:

Application has stopped responding.
The if you close serato and re-open it it works until it freezes again.

It does it sometimes while:
Previeweing files and modifying genre mp3 tag.
Browsing and deleting history.
Browsing music in general.

Is there a log I can look at to troubleshoot?

Thanks

Are you using an external HD?

Have you analyzed all of the files in the library using 1.9.2?

Did you post this in the beta section as well?
ABrau73 6:23 PM 17 March 2010
Using an external hard drive for video files. Toshiba 500GB USB. All audio files are on the 500GB internal hard drive.
I have analyzed all files using 1.9.2. I work with the current version tan the beta, but the error happens on both. It actually happened on a live session using version 1.9.2 when I went to the history and deleted the current date to start from scratch. The pop-up that the application had stopped responding came up. Had to let it close and re-open it and never happened again for the rest of the night.

It almost seems this hang happens when you try to modify mp3 tags and or modify history, add files, anything database related.

I will cipy and post on the beta section as well.

Thanks,

Thanks for doing so.

This could be a known bug we are tracking that deals with editing tags and the history / browse windows. If you can give a step by step detail of what you do to make it crash, I will try and replicate here.

OK here it goes. I havent tested but I'm close to figuring it out.
Example 1:
Offline player.
Let say Im in the files tab and I just dragged a folder to the All section in the crates to add them to the library. And while its scanning I then move on to preview my files, audio and video and edit tags. After a couple of songs it will hang. When I restart the songs will not show the updated tag information that I edited but if I load the song then the screen is updated and shows the updated tag information.

Example 2:
SL1 connected.
Lets say Im at the club and the pc has been sitting there for a while. I come back and start going through songs and videos, preparing for a set, but im dragging the songs I want to prepare. Then I go to the history and clear out the songs Ive listened to that day so I can start a fresh set. Then the app hangs. I restart the application and the hour ive spent dropping songs to the prepare window are gone and Im royally pissed LOL. Then I decide to start dropping the songs into a crate called set or daily set. It will also hang at some point but this time I havent lost the songs Ive selected, which makes me a happy DJ LOL.

Hope this helps. It happens usually when Im editing songs etc...

Hi ABrau73,

Thank you for the detailed description. Do you have this problem since you are using SL, or has SL been running fine at the beginning? What file format are your tracks? (Is SL hanging when you edit tags of a specific file format?) Did you remove all corrupted files after analyzing your library?

Please try this:
1) Close all programs
2) Open the ScratchLIVE folder within your Music folder
3) Rename the History folder to old_History
4) Rename the databaseV2 file to old_databaseV2
5) Open the _ScratchLIVE_ folder on the root of your external hd and repeat step 3 & 4
6) Restart SSL and allow the library to load (it may take a while as SSL rebuilds the databaseV2 file)
7) Test your system after SSL has finished loading

Please let us know how you get on.

Tried all this and still the same issue.
I have upgraded to SL 2.0 and VL 1.2

Always hangs with an application not responding while editing and analyzing video files.
Hangs after processing near to 100 files. So I've come up with a temp fix where I edit and analyze only a few files, close and re-open SL and repeat procedure. It is anoying me to the point of looking at other DJ software.

Video files are stored in a 500GB Toshiba external USB 2.0 drive. All MP4 format.

I know you are using this external for the video files, but are you getting this hang if you don't have any USB devices or Firewire devices connected to your computer?
ABrau73 6:09 AM 29 May 2010
It seems to be only when external drive is connected. What would you recommend. A different drive? This is a toshiba external usb2.0 500GB drive.
Im also considering buying a new mac book pro either the 13 inch or the 15 inch with 8GB ram. Are there any know issues with SL and Video SL and Mac OSX?
Chad S. 4:45 PM 1 June 2010
We all tend to think Video Sl runs better on MAC OS.

The extra ram won't do much for you by way of improving your Serato experience because it's only a 32 bit application (as of now anyway). Save your money on the ram and upgrade the video card. That's where you'll see the biggest improvement. Also search the forums for specific issues with both Mac and Windows based laptops before deciding on a final purchase.
FYI, I would try a different external drive first. It looks like you have 3 USB ports and an Expresscard 34 slot. I would use that Expresscard slot and buy an expansion card with either Firewire 800 or eSata and buy an external hard drive that supports one of those. If you follow the same naming rules and transfer your files over to the new drive you won't have to do much work in SSL. Also, there is a BIOS update for your laptop. You can download it through Dell.

Thanks for all the info. Ill take it into consideration. Ill let you know once I switch hard drives, I have some eSATA drive available just need to purchase the ECard.

I run all 64Bit OS, have any idea of when If at anytime there will be a 64bit Serato? I'm willing to be a beta tester.

This would indicate something to do with the external drive may be the problem.

Do you always properly dismount the drive?
How long do you wait after powering the drive down before moving it?
How old is the drive?
ABrau73 1:31 AM 10 June 2010
Always properly dismount the drive. The drive is a USB 2.0 portable drive and does not require external power or it be powered down. The drive is a couple of months old. not a year old yet.
Matt-C 1:35 AM 10 June 2010
Very strange.
You're not using a USB hub or anything?

Are you able to use any other USB drives you could test to see if they work fine?
ABrau73 1:52 AM 10 June 2010
No Hub. USB drive and Serato SL1 are directly connected to individual high speed USB 2.0 ports on the laptop.

That is the only drive I currently have configured with all the videos. I ordered an esata expresscard 34 card for the laptop and it will be delivered tomorrow. I arrive from Michigan on Friday so will test this weekend using an esata drive and the card.
I also ordered a new Dell Presicion M4500 laptop for further speed and comparison testing. Ive tested Serato on a latitude D620, Latitude D630, Latitude E4300, Latitude E6500 and still the same results. Did I mention I work for Dell LOL.

Im able to recreate the exact issue it happens when I do the following: Load a video and play it to preview it. Stop it from playing but leave it loaded. Edit the video tag, for example genre. Select another video or song and load it into serato. At that moment serato displays that it is writting the tag at the bottom of the screen. Re load the video that serato is currently writting the tag for and boom it crashes the program. So it seems it happens when you load a video that the tag is being written to.

Ive also notices that it does not always properly edit the tags. It displays that the tag info has changed, for example the genre changed from other to House. The is you reload the video it changes the genre to other. Almost like it never wrote the tag although it says it did.

This has happened to me as well. Exact same steps. Can't reproduce it every single time though. The Serato guys said they are working on tagging issues in the next release.
ABrau73 5:34 AM 12 June 2010
Sounds about right. I keep this in mind everytime I edit tags, unfortunately sometimes my finger are faster than my brain LOL, and I do load a video that is being edited. Glad to hear they are working on possible solution.

Thanks.
