Throwing a larging house party without getting shut down?

a DJ 5:50 PM 14 March 2010
I wanna throw a fairly big house party for my birthday (around 100 ppl) without it getting shut down. It's gonna be invite only and of course I'ma try to keep everyone under control with people helping me out. Anyone have any tips on preventing the cops from shutting down the party?

Is there any way to legally get a permit for a house party or for the noise or something? I'm in San Francisco California.
Dj-M.Bezzle 7:57 PM 14 March 2010

yea that's not a bad idea, the cops will only come if neighbors call. suggest that people take cabs, and just tell everyone to have a good time but keep things at a decent noise level. if it gets shut down, take it to the club.
DJ Prinvale` 10:25 PM 14 March 2010
as soon as I saw SF I cringed. Good luck with that....they are douchebags in SF about parties.

I would tell all your neighbors, invite them, and keep the music low after midnight...or try to throw it during some big event so the cops will be busy.
ninos 10:55 PM 14 March 2010
man dont throw a party, go to a party.. as my english teacher said.. lol
Turn Table Tennis 11:11 PM 14 March 2010
pay a bum to start a fire some where just outside of sf. that'll keep everyone busy for a while.
Dj_Dropz_ 11:20 PM 14 March 2010
buy tarp to cover up the sound where u dont want it (reflects the sound right back at the dance floor) the neighbors are a must!! invite or let them know of your festive mood coming up, keep it civil (jackasses can ruin a party/house/cars/ etc u get the point) keep everyone inside so someone at the front preventing ppl from leaving is a plus... ppl chilling outside causes unwanted attention to them and to your party... if everything seems to be covered its will still go as smooth as a los angeles street!! lol :P
a DJ 12:45 AM 15 March 2010
lol my bad I left out a key part.. I was thinking of renting out a house or something for a night.. And yeah, thats a good idea, I would have the people helping me keep everyone inside.

Anyway, I might just be going to this party where I can hop on the tables, I won't even have to bring much equipment.
a DJ 12:46 AM 15 March 2010
I'm still interested in hearing ideas though, cuz this is still a house party but just not hosted by me.
Dj_Dropz_ 12:55 AM 15 March 2010
hosted or not hosted by you the same rules overall still apply to what i have suggested... if anyone else adds be A DJ's guest... (:
djskiggz 2:21 AM 15 March 2010
rent a hall, won't have to worry about cops.
Dj_Dropz_ 2:47 AM 15 March 2010
a hall does sound like a good idea but here in my area u cant rent a hall past midnight unless you pay an extra fee and renting a hall is already expensive so it might not be cost effective renting a hall... unless you are 110% sure you can fill it to capacity which a typical hall is about 500-750 ppl
djskiggz 2:50 AM 15 March 2010
ah well fuck it, i tried

halls are no good. plus you cant spark up a bowl in a hall.... that's what i go to house parties for.
latindj 5:13 AM 15 March 2010
I dj'ed a halloween house party 3 years in a row...place was pumping full of music all night long, I even used my sub in the house...liquor everywhere and never got shut down once. Of course it didn't hurt that the guy I was dj'ing for was a cop....those fuckers get away with anything...lol!
djbanno 11:40 AM 15 March 2010
in my experience, hiring private security is a good idea too to keep out gatecrashers.
(or party at a cops house as above...lol)
djbanno 11:42 AM 15 March 2010
...and don't advertise it on facebook or similar for all to see!!!
SELECT 2:46 PM 15 March 2010
Neighbors. I had three big house parties in a row and never got shut down. Then we got new neighbors. They called the police in the first hour. No more house parties. Its all about who lives next to you. Best thing is to let them know ahead of time, it will get loud, inside and out. Drunk people at house parties love to go outside, smoke and be obnoxiously loud. If you can contain everyone inside and keep the noise down you'll be fine. Otherwise be prepared for the police to come and ticket you $$$ and harass everyone at the party, asking for ID's, etc.
Caramac 3:55 PM 15 March 2010
If only the police were as effective over here. I'd be shutting down house parties, hen nights, poker games and anything else that made some noise. Lol
Free Man 5:08 PM 15 March 2010
get a house with a view. that way you can see the cops coming. make it so that no one can park around the house. i've even been to some that had valet. room between houses is nice too so they cant hear your noise
O.B.1 6:10 PM 15 March 2010
I've thrown some crazy ones where we soundproofed the whole house with gobos.
-alot of work though, but no noise complaints...
FunkyRob 7:59 PM 15 March 2010
I thought a gobo was a light?

It really depends on your neighbors though.

I djed an outdoor party in menlo park a couple years ago. They setup a canopy in the driveway out front, invited all the neighbors and it went without a hitch until the wee hours of the morning.

This past weekend in someones garage in Redwood City.

If you want to keep it on the low, don't bring out the subwoofers.

SF is likely to be different with all the housed so damn close together.
Manny Rize 8:23 PM 15 March 2010
have your sound system inside the house...take out all your furniture and store it somewhere safe...last time me and some friends threw a party we bashed all the furniture to the garage..moved all valuables and turnt that shit up...........inside a house i completely soundproof....outisde u hear nothing...u step in and its crazy as hell...just dont turn up your subs 2 loud....or if your doin it outside follow above advice....hah
Dj-M.Bezzle 8:46 PM 15 March 2010
arent those soundproofed houses crazy hot?
Dj-M.Bezzle 8:46 PM 15 March 2010

bourbonstmc 9:06 PM 15 March 2010
If the cops do come, send the hottest chick to the door to slow them down.

Gobo is a slang term used by sound recording engineers to refer to a movable acoustic isolation panel.

An acoustics gobo is parallel in use to a photography gobo, which is used to block direct light sources, and also shares its name with the stage lighting gobo. The origin of the term “gobo” is obscure, but is most likely short for “go-between.”

I live in WA state, the party was last winter, we actually had a fire going in the fireplace.

it cost about $300 in 2x4, sheets osb board, and carpeting, they were 4ft x 8ft panels
with dead-airspace inside them, and we covered all the windows and doors.
and we can re-use them again.
DJ Josh V 6:04 AM 16 March 2010
I DJ for a friend from work a while back here in LA originaly outdoors. When the cops came my friend asked what we could do to keep the party going. They said to keep everyone indoors. My friend was already so faded she said lets do it!That party got so much more crazy after. Ill never forget, this chick trying to get with me right in front of her man.She was even trying to kiss me and shit and homeboy was just there like a punk, lol. good times :-)

Go to Oakland pose as a promoter tell em you will have upwards of 300 ppl at your event ask for a percentage of bar sales owner may ask you to cover the bar wich should be 3 to 600 dollars those dumps are always empty

if owner is honest he may give you your percentage up N over 3- 6 benj's
if not your only out the cash it woulda cost you to rent a place anyhow and you
can rock out till whenever

also watch out for nasty taxes in bay area Club owners may charge you for those
Free Man 1:16 PM 16 March 2010
O.B.1.

Where do you but that sound proofing? I live in an apt and need something so i can have my music up enough to at least do a little mixing. how much does one board cost?
O.B.1 6:03 PM 16 March 2010
I just built it out of materials from home-depot...
one gobo =
two 2x4 8'
two 4ftx8ft sheets of osb
grey carpeting

make a 4ftx8ft frame out of 2x4 and screw the osb to both sides which gives you about 4" of dead air space inside. then cover with carpeting...
Audio1 6:08 PM 16 March 2010
What city, A DJ?

DONT INVITE THUGS! THERE.
Dj_Dropz_ 8:33 PM 16 March 2010
guys all you need is tarp... it works!! the only negative is that u can see inside the party (dj lights etc) but its perfect for deflecting the sound from places u dont want it going... you can get them for super cheap and you can set them up how u like!! the cheapest most effective way it tarp fellas... o and AUDIO1 hes trynna throw the party in Frisco
Dj-M.Bezzle 8:50 PM 16 March 2010
we did that in gulf shores, we threw a party in a beach house (since we have flooding and hurricanes the houses are built off the ground but the bottom level is like an open car port ou can see it, its basicall made to be flooded) and we took tarp and tarped up all 4 sides of the area, set up a dj booth on the stairs and flooded the bottom level with a foam machine, it was epic, we were renting the house (LOL) and went and talked to all the neighbors and all gave their approval except 1 ASSHOLE, the tarp worked well you couldnt even hear the music outside of the area but the neighbor still called the cops at 11 sharp (when the noise rules kicked in) and the cops busted it up, they were cool about it though cause they said it didnt look or sound like we were causing a problem
Audio1 8:50 PM 16 March 2010
OK. The laws differ from city to city. SF has a low tolerance for house parties, hence I asked. maybe He might be throwing in a suburb of SF, say, Oakland or Richmond or Pleasanton or Fremont or San Mateo.

For the most part, Inform your neighbors ahead of time, Gather any concerns they may have, keep it civil and keep all the party inside the house. Once it steps outside, The cops have every right to fuck with you, justified or not.
DJ DECK 9:16 PM 16 March 2010
It mainly depends on:

1. City (some cities tolerate a party to a certain time but it goes hand and hand with your neighbors complaining or not)
2. Neighbors (Assholes or not)
3. thug-hipsters (fucking shit by acting up and not actually staying inside the party.)

I've done parties where I've agreed to play to a certain time but emphasized that it wont be my fault if the party gets shut down before and I will be getting payed the full amount regardless.

hate those fuckers, ihate it when you have a group and theres someone who just wont fuckin listen like you tell em to stay inside and they say yes but not 5 seconds later their back outside talkin loud as fuck

There was a chick at one of my parties... she asked what my address was. I told her to go fuck herself and throw her own party at her house because i knew she'd invite a bunch of dudes... funny part is i was right. she got pissed at me and said there were more chicks than guys. I smiled and said that was how i like my parties, and told her that she was a buzz kill and needed to leave

i love throwin people out of my house. you can almost see their feelings get hurt. especially when you throw them out for something dumb like spilling half a beer on a hardwood floor.
a DJ 10:43 PM 22 March 2010
Well I ended up just going to my friends' party and speaking of dumb ass shit, some idiots tagged the INSIDE of host's house. and there was a fight outside, then the cops came and tried to take CRATES because they're property of the USPS.. Woww HAHA!! Everyone dipped & came back and we kept partying just with less people
FunkyRob 12:56 AM 23 March 2010
wait, somebody used USPS flat mail tubs to keep records in?

www.emeraldinsight.com

The bottoms are weak and flimsy, I don't see that working at all.
a DJ 3:29 AM 23 March 2010
yeah one of those, they work fine. probably better to have a hard bottom just in case, but I've never seen records break the bottom and fall.
