Hi, I bought my Serato SL1 5 years ago. I've used it live 3+ times per week throughout. the first 4.5 years have been fantastic. However the last 6 months have been a nightmare! I now DJ @ 2 residencies every Fri and Saturday & I host 2 radio shows per week. For the last 4years I have DJd 100% digitally.

Prolems started with dropouts and then crashes. Now Serrato freezes and I have to force a restart.

Last Friday night I had 2 freezes. On Saturday I had 4, resulting in me asking a friend to collect vinyl from my home. On my live online radio shows I've had dropouts, crashes and freezes every week for 5 months. It's a bit of a running joke, if we fix it my shows will not be the same without a meltdown. However it is terrible PR for you guys because I have to explain that Serato has once again frozen etc. This needs fixing now because one of these radio stations will be broadcasting via FM accross the North of England in summer 2010.

Notes:
I've not had a crash for a while. (No need for Dr Watson)
Constant freezes.
Constant dropouts.
Red light dropout indicator flashes periodically.
Dropouts lead to freezes.
After a record 4 crashes last Saturday I ctrl alt del to exit Serato when I saw a window saying that I needed to plug my high speed USB device into a high speed USB port. (Which decice though? Serato or Ext HD.) This message reccommended 6 availalable ports for use with a hi speed USB device. There are only 3 on my laptop.

For months I've tried trouble shooting everything:
New / old USB leads.
Removed all music rom laptop C Drive - All music / cratesare on an external hard drive.
Bought a new External Hard Drive.
Analysed all tracks.
Deleted all corrupt files.
Renaming database V2 on C and on Ext HD.
Checked for laptop updates.
Turned off USB timers.
Turned off screen savers.
Turned off hibernate.
Removed all unneccessary programs.
Removed google Chrome.
Re-installed Serato software.
Tried running serato / Ext HD through all USB ports.
constand virus / adaware scans.

Hard Drives:
Lacie 80 gig bus powered Hard Drive (not broken as first thought)
Lacie Little Disk 320 gig Ext HD

Hi Dan Soulsmith,

Thank you for the information. I'm sorry to hear that you've had those problems over the last months.

First, I'd like to ask you to double check if you did all of the below. Just to be sure it's none of that, before we focus on other things.
1) Always plug directly into the computer’s USB port, not a hub.
2) Check that you are using a ‘good’ USB port.Try all ports until you get the best results.
3) Go to your laptop manufacturer's website to check if there are any driver updates for your machine.
4) Switch off Bluetooth, wireless network and unplug any wired network connections.
5) Switch off screen saver and set sleep mode and hard drive sleep to 'never'.
6) Ensure you have ample room left on your hard drive (this is approx 10% of your hard drive both internal and external).
8) Close down any other software, including antivirus software or the like.
9) Check your scopes according to the linked page and let me know the results: www.serato.com

Your RATT report shows a peak at your USB drivers and a slight peak at your network drivers. Please try this:
1) Open the Device Manager
2) open Universal Serial Bus controllers, right click and choose 'Update Driver Software' on ALL listed devices
3) unplug absolutely every other USB device while using SL (for testing only)
3) open Network Adapters, right click and disable the Wireless and Ethernet device (for the time you are using Scratch Live)

Quote:

After a record 4 crashes last Saturday I ctrl alt del to exit Serato when I saw a window saying that I needed to plug my high speed USB device into a high speed USB port. (Which decice though? Serato or Ext HD.)

This message must relate to your external hard drive as the SL1 is not a high speed USB device.

Please excuse me for the upcoming barrage of questions, but its important info when trying to trouble shoot this:
- Did you change anything before those problems occurred for the first time (new USB hardware i.e web cam, ...)?
- Since when are you using version 1.9.2? (approximately)
- How old are your control vinyls?
- How much free space do you have on all of your hard drives?
- Do you have more then one user account on your computer?

Please also unplug your external hard drive and play some songs from your internal hd. Do you get the same freezes?

Let me know and we'll go from there.

Thanks for the reply Daniel.

Yeah, you've asked a lot of questions, but I understand... there are a lot of factors to consider. Feels like I'm going round in circles. I change / fix something, test at home thinking that I've solved the problem, then play out live, only for a freeze to occur - always after an hour or 2 of playing.
So before I test I'll answer a few of your Qs now.

1) No USB hubs used. I plug direct into the 3 ports on the laptop. (is there an internal laptop hub?)

2) I think all of my USB ports are good. because other devices work in them fine, whereas serato has the same problem no matter which port it is in.

3) Have checked for driver updates. There are no new ones for my machine.

4) Have never used bluetooth on this laptop. I'm not connected to wireless networks in the venues where I play. Although the machine does detect available networks. I just don't connect.

5) Switched off screen saver and set sleep mode and hard drive sleep to 'never'.

6) Internal Drive C used space = 15 gig, available space = 95.9 gig

7) Have closed antivirus / adaware etc.

8) Scopes are sweet. - After calibrating here at home = CV02A (left) 33.1 / -46.4 / 100%
CV02a (right) 33.1 / -37.0 / 100%

9) Brand-new control vinyl. & brand-new stylus.

10) Universal Serial Bus Controllers:
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD (Updated driver)
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Universal host controller - 24C2 (updated driver)
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Universal host controller - 24C4 (updated driver)
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Universal host controller - 24C7 (updated driver)
- USB Serato Driver (displaying yellow exclamation symbol - could not update the driver)
- USB Root Hub (Could not update) (What is this btw?)
- USB Root Hub (Could not update) (What is this btw?)
- USB Root Hub (Could not update) (What is this btw?)
- USB Root Hub (Could not update) (What is this btw?)

Note again that I only have 3 visable USB ports.
While DJing one is used by serato, another by the Lacie Little Disk 320 gig Ext HD - which is less than half full, & has a new V2 database with no corrupt files on.

10) I started using 1.9.2 the week of release. I recently removed it and installed it again.

11) I'm the only user account I think.

12) Another thing to note is that I move my USB buffer down to 5, but it seems to revert back to 15 when I reboot. I've noticed this twice now. The last time I played out (4 freezes) i moved it down to 5 while playing live - despite the cut out in sound. now it is back to 15.

13) I mentioned that I replaced the External hard drive with a new one, thinking that the old Ext HD was unstable and causing my problems. However the same problems are persisting with the new drive. With the new drive I am using a USB extension lead, in order to stash the Ext HD away somewhere not on view. This is due to the small retractable lead of the Ext HD ( www.aria.co.uk )
I'm not sure if the USB extension cable is USB2. might this be an issue?

BTW I would prefer to have no tunes on my laptop at all and for them all to be on an Ext HD.

OK, so let me know if any of the above raises new questions.

In the meantime I'll continue testing. I'll also put some music back on the laptop internal drive and test, but i did have the same problems a month ago when music was on the laptop internal drive.

Thanks again.

Ok, thanks for the detailed information, that helps a lot.
I have some follow-up questions. :)

1) Are any tracks loaded to the sample player (SP6)?

2) Did you unplug all other USB devices while using Scratch Live?

3) Did you disable bluetooth and all network cards as described above? Your computer shouldn't be able to check for open wireless networks. That's quite important as your RATT report shows issues with your network drivers.

5) Can you please open the ScratchLIVE folder within your music folder and rename the History folder to old_History? (Also, repeat that for your _ScratchLIVE_ folder on your external hds)

6)
Quote:

- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD (Updated driver)

Please right click on this controller, choose properties and click on 'Advanced'. Which USB devices are connected to this port? Make sure you are connecting your external hd to this port, by trying several ports on your computer.

7)
Quote:

- USB Serato Driver (displaying yellow exclamation symbol - could not update the driver)

Can you please click on that symbol for further information, make a screenshot and upload it to this thread?

8)
Quote:

With the new drive I am using a USB extension lead, in order to stash the Ext HD away somewhere not on view.

I'd definitely remove the extension. It would actually be even better if the external hard drive would have an own power supply. But remove the extension for now.

9)
Quote:

The last time I played out (4 freezes) i moved it down to 5 while playing live - despite the cut out in sound. now it is back to 15.

That's odd, can you check if that happens every time you reboot your computer? What happens to other changes in the setup screen (i.e. 'track end warning') Are they also not saving? Do you get dropouts with both latency settings (5 and 15)?

10)

Does your computer get very hot, while using SL?
Your system specifications are quite close to the minimum specifications.
(Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.50GHz, Memory: 990MB RAM)
That makes your setup sensitive to any circumstances that are not optimal.
Please check your scopes when playing in the next club.

Please also try using Scratch Live without external hd and any other USB device.

Let me know how you get on. :)
Dan Soulsmith 12:17 PM - 10 March, 2010
Thanks for the reply. I've not had time to test serato since I last wrote. Hopefully I will find time before my next radio show (tomorrow / thurs), and hopefully by then we have narrowed it down and limited the possiblity of dropouts / feezes.

1) No tracks loaded into SP6

2) No, Ext HD was plugged in.

3) No, I've now disabled all:
1394 Net Adapter - was already disabled
Disabled - Intel (R) PRO/Wireless 220BG Network Connection
Disabled - PPop WAN Adapter
Disabled -Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

5) Have just done as you requested. Note last week I deleted the entire history by selecting all / ctrl del through serato - IE not by going into the ScratchLIVE folder. Also there is no History floder on the Ext HD.

6) Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD (Using 10% bandwidth) IS NOT DISPLAYING ANY DEVICES - I have tried both Serato and Ext HD in all 3 ports and refreshed each time.
Question. Why is it saying there are 4 available ports, when there are only 3 on the machine?:
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Universal host controller - 24C2
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Universal host controller - 24C4
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Universal host controller - 24C7

So I still have no idea which port is best for what.

7) There is no yellow exclamation logo being displayed now.

8) Removed the Extension cable as requested.

9) Re set-up this seems fine, I might have made a mistake here. Will monitor though.

10) My machine does get hot. But how hot is too hot?
Note: I've used the same machine for the 5 years I've had Serato, it may be getting hotter.
Questions. What improvements would you advise towards making my machine more optimal now?
When you say check my scopes, what am I looking for?

Finally, find a new RATT reprot attached... now that all network cards are disabled, and now that there are music files internally on the laptop - and the Ext HD is not plugged in.
Hope this helps.

Regards

Hi. I´ve had similarproblems and tried a lot. At the end i noticed a menu poinzt in the BIOS called "dynamically Switchable" which is an ernergy option. I´ve switched this to "disabled" and haven´t had any problems since.

System specs Toshiba Satallite A100-493
Duo Core 1,73
1GB RAM
149GB HD
And i have addtl. music software such as Ableton installed.
I don´t know if this can help you.
Good luck

Thanks for checking that.
The network drivers look perfect now. The USB driver is better but still a bit high, which might relate to the driver being poorly written. Should be OK for now though.

Honestly, I can't explain why you see 4 ports but your computer does only have three plugs. It might be that one of them is just not connected to the chassis or internally used.

Just check if the dropouts appear after you've played a longer set and your machine is very hot. Some computers reduce performance to cool the machine down. It might make sense to get a laptop CoolPad in that case. (They are quite cheap) Another thing to check is your task manager. See if any scheduled events take place in the background while the dropouts appear.
Besides that, it looks as if you already did everything to improve your performance.

When you say check my scopes, what am I looking for?

Check your scopes according to this article: www.serato.com The first picture shows a good scope. All other screenshots on that side show faulty scopes, which means there is any kind of distortion in your setup. The article also explains possible problems and tells you how to solve them. Especially clubs have bad turntable vibrations sometimes. (Talking from own experiences here.) Make sure you calibrate your system in each environment. (home, club, radio show)

It might also make sense trying Eb-Clectic's suggestion as well, if the problem still occurs after you've checked your system. (Thanks, Eb-Clectic) However, this would be on your own risk, as I'm not familiar with this setting. ;)

Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

Do you actually also get dropouts with a USB buffer size of 15?
Dan Soulsmith 2:19 PM - 11 March, 2010
OK thanks Daniel K and Eb-Clectic,

I tried plugging the Ext HD into each port, but it always shows up as below.

- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Universal host controller - 24C2
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Universal host controller - 24C4
- Intel (R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Universal host controller - 24C7
- USB Mass Storage Device (<<< Same as with Serato when that is plugged in)
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub

So I still have no idea which port is which.

Re dropouts at buffer size 15.. This might? not be the case... obviously I'd like a tighter response, so the slider has been up and down each time I think I've cured the problem, and back to 15 when I've realised that I haven't. So I can't be certain.

Also, bear in mind that the 2nd RATT report I sent you was conducted without the Ext HD plugged in. I have too much music for the laptop's internal drive so I will attempt to comtinue using an ext HD.

Thanks for all the advice and fantastic support!, if you don't hear back from me then we must have cleared something up.

the reason i even looked at the BIOS is because i got drop outs when the ventilation kicked in. but my machine was ventilating like mad even after being switched on freshly. so i wondered how you can control the vents and ended up in the BIOS. Since the my machine doesn´t vent so crazily anymore.

Just played a live 2 hr radio show online. Didn't have time to test, or move tracks to internal. So used Ext HD.

One drop out ... USB indicator lit red before sound cut out for one second.- about half an hour in.

Then froze with no warning 1h.45m in.

Will test further with internal music / no Ext HD.

Make sure you always plug in the hd before you plug in the SL1. It looks as if the USB plug is automatically routet to a USB 1 or 2 port depending on the device. You should be fine as long as you don't get the "plug your high speed USB device into a high speed USB port" message.

However, please test your setup with no external hard drive and a USB latency of 5-10. Would be good to know how that goes.

Hi again Daniel.

Moved music to laptop. Shelved Ext Hard Drive.

Played a 5 hour set on Friday - no problems at all.

Played 6 hour set Saturday - one crash.. USB indicator lit then crashed. It wasn't the usual freeze because I didn't have to force a restart. Just the program not responding / end now action. Relaunched serato and was fine. No idea why the crash?

More importantly I did my 2 hour radio show yesterday and it was fine. First show with no meltdown in a very long time!

Will monitor.

Thanks for the support.

Hey Dan Soulsmith,

I'm really glad to hear that.

You might have already analyzed your library. However, it can't hurt to do it again and remove every corrupt file from your library. This is very important, as most crashes are caused by corrupt files, even if they are not played. Please have a look at this page for a good instruction: serato.com > Detecting and removing corrupt files

Thank you for providing all those detailed information.

Hello again,

It's been 10 months since I last had serious crash issues (see above - This situation was simply resolved by not using an external hard drive)

I've recently had major problems again, mostly USB dropouts. Over the last month things have got progressively worse.
While DJing on New Years Eve serato and my laptop crashed at, you've guessed it... 5 minutes to midnight. So we reverted to an Ipod on the house system while I rebooted.

A few days ago I downloaded and installed 2.2, I use SL1 so I updated the drivers. I didn't have time to test it before I presented my radio show last night.
During my live FM broadcast / live mix I suffered constant USB dropouts from the second mix and throughout. My USB buffer is always set to 15. I've never experienced such consistent dropouts, especially while mixing 2 tunes. Very glitchy!
On 2 occasions the sound dropped out for approx 5 seconds - while the hardware could not be detected, then kicked back in. On the second occasion I gave up and reverted to CDs.
It was yet another horrendous serato abortion!

I've used this laptop and the same SL1 hardware for 6 years. I had no problems whatsover for approx the first 5 years.

This morning I uninstalled all unrequired programmes, performed general maintainance, dissconnected from the internet and have tested all day.
C drive was recently defragged.
The same problem persists.
I've deleted all corrupt files on a regular basis

Is 2.2 too big for my system?
Are my USB ports now too outdated?
Should I revert back to a much older version of the serato software?

System info:
Microsoft XP Home edition (5.1 build 2600)
Hewlett-Packard
Presario M2000 (EC058EA~ABU)
BIOS: Phoenix NoteBIOS 4,0 Release 6.0
Intel(R) M Processor 1.50GHz
990MB RAM
Page Files 338MB used, 1284MB available
Direct X Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

RATT report attached.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hey Dan,

Yes.. I'd say your computer is under spec to run the newer versions of SSL.
You could run through the Windows optimization guide -->serato.com to strip down the processes running on your computer but if that doesn't work then I would suggest rolling back to the version you used to use until you get a newer computer.

You can find all old versions of SSL here --> serato.com

Thanks Zach, been a while since I last logged in or had a problem. I've since been using the wife's laptop - with no problems at all.

However I bought a brand new laptop at the weekend. Have optimised it, but I'm now getting big problems with audio dropping out. The Virtual deck keeps spinning, while the waveform disappears and audio cuts out. Then have to drag the playing record in order to bring back waveform/sound.

Any advice please...

Hey Dan,

What are the specs of your new machine?

Are you importing music from the internal or external drive?
Dan Soulsmith 4:43 PM - 30 October, 2012
Hi Zach, just done my BassDrive show - live. Four tunes in I had to revert to vinyl and do and oldchool set.

I was playing my 4th track when I loaded a 3 second sample (WAV) onto the right deck. There was an audible glitch heard through both channels, then the sample waveform dissapeared and the right virtual deck locked, the left deck continued to play. I could do nothing to get right deck going again in Serato. So I unplugged decks into mixer - bypassing Serato.

Serato remained open, however despite no tracks playing in Serato, the yellow/red USB drop out indicator light kept flashing throughout the rest of my show. Which was weird?

I was still connected to my wireless network during my show.

Q. USB lead?

Q. My mixer is really faulty, on it's last legs. Leaking faders, mains hum etc. Serato was still plugged into the lines, but phono was obviously selected. Can a dodgy mixer affect Serato?

We do not suggest having this on when you use SSL.
We would actually suggest disabling the network adapters entirely.

1. Click on the Start menu in the lower left corner of your desktop.
2. Click on the 'Control Panel'.
(Make sure your in Classic View)
3. Click on 'Network and Sharing Center'.
4. Click 'Change Adapter Settings' on the left of the screen.
5. Right click on any adapters you see and choose to 'disable' them.

If a USB lead goes bad the Rane interface just won't connect at all so I would say that isn't the problem.
A dodgy mixer would not cause the issue you are having either.

At this point I would reanalyze your entire library.

You can force SSL to do this by holding down the ctrl key and clicking on the 'analyze files' tab.

Once everything has been analyzed look through your 'all' section and delete ANY corrupt files found.

Let me know if you're still having issues once you've done that and we'll go from there.
