okay... know how the output of the sound from serato (vs. vinyl)-- serato is significantly less loud. in the empath (to my understanding) there is an auto-gain feature that balances outcoming sound to "prevent performance wrecking changes in volume"-- does the 57SL have this feature as well, or when one would switch from vinyl to serato and vice versa, would one have to change the gain to fit? (higher for serato, lower for vinyl) let me know if this doesn't make sense to anyone-- i'd like to know as this sounds like a very helpful feature

You can adjust the gain of your tracks within SSL, but even then, you will still probably need to tweak the gain knobs a little to get the levels to match.
One option for the tunes you have already stored in digital format would be to use MP3Gain, which is a free software app for pc that you can use to set all your tunes to the same relative volume. There are a ton of threads about gain and MP3Gain, so if you do a search, you will find more info than you will know what to do with.

On the 57 the output from Serato is the same as vinyl, or at least it is for me.

Good question. I have been having some issues trying to make sure that my recorded sets have proper gain adjustments from the program and the mixer. When you adjust the program gains...how do you reccomend you get the most optimal sound coming out for recording a mix using the 57? I can adjust the gain on the mixer and hear it adjust in the headphones...but when you adjust the program I dont think you can hear it prior to getting cued up. Any guidance would be awesome!

If you adjust the recording volume inside SSL, this wont affect any of the output volumes on the mixer.
Was that the question?

The adjustments near the decks and also the master gain adjustments on the program. When you adjust those how do you make sure you get good sound coming out the mixer? For the program there is recording, deck, and master volume gain adjustments. On the mixer is normal gain adjustments. Why so many diffrent adjustments and how can I make sure it sounds good when mixing? Thanks for the help nik!

Just dont touch them. Leave them at 12oclock. If your tracks have the loudest unclipping volume, then gaining them with the both aforementioned knobs *will* clip thus distort them.
I cant comment on the recording knob value.
For the channel gains on the mixer, I would say they work just as they work on a normal mixer.
Now that was clever, huh? ;)
Seriously, Steve M from Rane has explained before on this forum "how to properly gain". (Gotta search the forum) Rule thumb, always try to keep the signal as loud as possible (without clipping that is!) beginning at the source! So in that case, first make sure if you are recording an mp3 from vinyl that the channel gains are as loud as possible (always w/o clipping and distortion), make sure you use as much headroom as possible while recording inside the software. Now if you play back those files, keep the deck's gains as loud as possible, now keep the master as loud as possible etc.
Hope that makes sense.

Ok I will look and search around the forums. Sorry for the newbie question man. So dont mess with any of the adjustments on the program...keep all of them at 12 and adjust all the gains from the mixer which would be at the source. That makes sense. I was just wondering cause today I would record my mix and im looking at the gain indication next to the decks and it would start getting into the red area which made me worry and feel that the sound was clipping going out. The indication on the program was that the signal was clipping but on the mixer (source) I was not clipping. I think I had the sound go all the way up to the +8 indication on the mixer. Sorry for all the dumb questions...I just got this mixer and still trying to figure out how to use it to its fullest. I appreciate the help though!

No worries. The recordin knobs and all that stuff can be confusing indeed.
