So I assume that you have: Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory
Do you have any videos up on youtube or something? I would like to see the performance.

it keep crashing without effects being added so is that the problem, because my specs are low

I would not expect that to work well. Not sure why you're crashing, but that was a really low-powered GPU even when it was new.
The next-generation GMA 3100 GPU's can actually do VSL on "high" quality (though with no effects) at usable framerates, IF you lower the "screen updates" setting in SSL down to 5.

New to this with a pre-unibody 2.2gHz /2g ram and 8600gt graphics... Running perfectly!
Although, I wouldn't suggest a NEW MacBook Pro...See if u can save some money and get a pre-unibody... The money you save on the laptop can be used toward record pools and what not..That is, unless you have an unlimited budget...

No true. I have this exact one and I play VSL on "high" quality... even with effects.

i must be doing something wrong because my frame rates are horrible.

I use the handbrake setting that is on the serato site except i change the audio bitrate to 320. The cpu usage are usually around 100% each processor.

2:57 AM - 6 March, 2010
That audio bitrate on handbrake is based on aac and not mp3. You can hit around 160-224 and be fine if it's coming from an UNcompressed source already like DVD. I've been playing around with that stupid Handbrake and VSL setting for a while. Honestly, MPEG Streamclip works much better for me with the MPEG 2 playback feature for VOBs.

I use VisualHub and although I can't go past 160 is still AAC so it sounds good. No issues with my old Macbook 2.0 and VisualHub encoding. Too bad they don't make it anymore for those who don't have it already.

I have the black macbook and was wondering the same thing, I'm hoping the GMA950 will work (even though it is below recommended specs). Just can't afford $1,000 for a used MBP :( So I guess I will take the gamble and spend $200 for VSL plug-in and suffer the limited effects (which it seems like they all work in the demo anyway)
Wish me luck!

Yeah I have a black macbook with gma 950. Haven't tried video SL but don't have high hopes. It runs a 21" monitor in full HD, but I can't watch 1080p youtube on the 21" screen. Really underpowered. The new MBP graphics should be nice. Goddamit the 13" still has a core 2 duo though, i'm gonna wait til the next revision
Caliber

i hadve a macbook pro on on layaway, was waiting for apple to upgrade, gonna get the 15'' MBP. Hopefully that should be more than enough to run video sl. I will just use my Macbook for sl only

been using VSL with 2.0 black MacBook 4 GB Ram GMA GRFX card. Did 3 full 4 hour gigs with 1 crash because I was moving a bit fast and adding video to mp3s on the fly, so sorta my bad on taxing the CPU mid-mix. Quality on my projector is questionable. of course videos are from all sources but the vidz from record pools only look okay in my opinion. effects work fine, I use my VCI-300 to control video effects separately from audio. Recently moved all my videos to my internal drive for ease of browsing, but this is causing the VSL plug-in to crash periodically. Wondering if as a general rule, it is better to keep all vidz on external firewire drive????? (for smoother running Serato)
Dj Nyce
1:48 PM - 14 May, 2010
the only vj reason to keep vidz on an external drive is for space. vidz take up a lot of space and you'll soon find yourself running out (music and vidz).
the external fw800 will be slightly slower than the internal, but you won't be able to see this slowness when using video-sl.
also using an external you have the option of using 2.5 or 3.5 drives.

Thanks for the input Nyce! I have a few external drives but I have found myself moving all my pictures and non-DJ stuff to those drives lately so my internal 500GB can just contain my music and vidz. I have about 12,000 mp3s and 1,300 mp4s. Luckily, I tediously trim all the fat and seem to be doing okay on space for the moment. I think this 500GB will last me long enough before I buy a new computer (hopefully with space for a larger HD) :D
I would move everything to external but it really seems like a pain in the butt to browse for songs. Is there a way I can put everything on external and still have search options just like it was in itunes? I hate typing in artists names, I much prefer making playlists in SSL and just going down the line come show time!

its highly recommended to use a macbookpro for professional results, but congrads on getting it to work :)
Make sure you set your settings to medium, anything else above is pointless, and search the forums for proof.

Dude keep the macbook pro. why would you limit your specs just to save money when you are going to have to upgrade again in less than two years? Get a business license and write it off on your taxes if you do anything.

I ran a white 2.0 for 1 year... it was OK, I guess. I got MBP a year and a half ago and would never go back! Your blackbook will have plenty of unavailable/restricted effects, low framerates, and this will only get worse as new versions come along and your videos go higher quality.

the real answer is - it works & that's wassup!
2.0 with 2.2 on 2Ghz BlackBook GMA950 for several 4 hour sets, no limits on available effects - video quality could be better, but IT DOES WORK!

Yes, there is a lag issue with 10.5.2 to 10.5.5 (?) when loading up mp4's on the initial load only I believe but is fixed after (please correct if I am wrong).

Why people doesn't update their Mac OSX's?
Every new version is improvement over previous one.
It only takes a minute and it's free (only $30 in the worst case).
I have black MacBook 2.2GHz with x1300GPU too and mine runs perfectly in every aspect.

Wrong, every update is NOT an improvement, sometime those update mess with serato, there was a quicktime update that gave people problems,
i'm at 10.5.8 ssl 1.9.2 & vsl 1.1.1 everything works flawless , i have no planes to update

i'm at osx 10.6.3 ssl 2.0 and vsl 1.2. absolutely no problems. you may be fine with osx 10.5.8 but ssl 2.0 is a major update with a tons of new features. there is no reason that you should not be using it. And vsl 1.2 works with ssl 2.0, adds text/images and linked audio effects. why would you not use 1.2?
