Canal St. NY- Whats it all about?

DJ Josh V 8:57 AM 1 March 2010
So Im doing some graphic design work for an artist for a video named after this street and trying to get some input on what its all about. Was a short meeting with distractions so we didnt have much time to discuss this.

So far from what I've seen is its like a street with shops kinda like here in L.A. called 'The Ally ('s)".

Is there any "mob" like history associated with the street? Any feedback, thanks!

Canal St is in China town it is the infamous area where you can buy fake shit. Fake purses, jewelry, and bootlegg movies. It's a long ass strip where there's nothing but hole in the wall shops with Chinese people peddling shit.
Banana_Peter 2:12 PM 1 March 2010
Just go to Ebay and search for NFL, NBA, MLB jerseys, purses, bags, brand name clothing, etc. If you think the price is too good to be true, you will get the idea what its about

BERTO 12:57 AM 2 March 2010
there is also false walls for the real bootleg stuff
djchriscruz 2:20 AM 2 March 2010
All those people with fake coach and LV bags roll around in vans full of that shit. Then the ladies walk around with pictures of the bags to show anyone interested. They migrate to different spots so cops cant catch their asses.

Last time I was buying my girl a purse there I felt like I was about to go in a van to bang a hooker.
DjSugarDaddy 9:54 AM 2 March 2010
then when you pick the pictures of the stuff you want, the girl makes a call and a dude rolls up from around the back corner on a bike with the stuff and a quick transaction is made lol
jwhispers 2:58 PM 2 March 2010
I got a nice stovado watch on canal street a few years ago. Guy shows me the watch and I'm like how much? He goes 120. I was like WHAT do I look like a f*ckin tourist? He was like ok gimmie 40 LOL!!! I was like how about 25 and he takes it hahahaha. From 120 to 25. I told him I wanted one with a blue face so he got on his cell and 3 minutes later a dude comes running up from across the street with a blue one haha.

I work 2 blocks from canal. I walk by the 1st precinct on my way to/from the subway every day. I always see the police roll up with van-fulls of fake bags and shit that they confiscated.
djchriscruz 5:44 PM 2 March 2010
I dont see why cops gotta bust them as long as they stay on canal and are not peddling shit at Time Square. Buying fake shit on Canal is just as much a tourist attraction as the Empire State Building.

Cops don't like Asians

I dont see how those Chinese people can afford to live in NY. Alot of them barely speak english and cleary dont work on Wallstreet. If they're not selling fake shit or selling food what do the common people do to afford the high cost of NY living?
Banana_Peter 7:27 PM 2 March 2010
they live in groups in a small room
DJ Josh V 8:34 PM 2 March 2010
Im sure its the same in NY as LA, Chinese food and doughnuts FTW!

The record so far I seen was a quadripal combo: Chinese food/doughnuts/ice cream/home decor
Caramac 1:22 PM 3 March 2010
I only brought an I Luv NY shirt when I was down there. The missus wanted a fake LV bag. I was happy to get her a real one but she rips and breaks everything she's a fucking clutz lol so she wanted a fake one. Long story short the woman at the shop refused to show me any of the good stuff.
CMOS 5:23 PM 3 March 2010
Ahh thats because u either:

A: Look like 5.0.
B. Didnt do the patented "wave money in the air while slowly leaving shop" to make her say WAIT!!
Dj-M.Bezzle 5:38 PM 3 March 2010
leave it to caramac to find the 1 ligitimate shop on the street to go pandering for illegal goods
Caramac 10:56 PM 3 March 2010
I don't look like 5.0 lol. I get told I look like a drug dealer/stick up kid so maybe they thought I was looking to turn the place over lol.
djchriscruz 2:14 PM 4 March 2010
It's kinda hard to get turned down buy Chinese peddlers on Canal St. Those fools are in your face on every corner trying to show you pictures of LV and Coach bags.
Caramac 3:25 PM 4 March 2010
None of that when I was there. Been down there a few times but never seen anything that looks anywhere near ''real'' Lol.
Caramac 3:26 PM 4 March 2010
I have however been approached by every rapper under the sun with a mixtape when in NY and stopped by no less than 4000 people assuming I'm Spanish and can speak Spanish.
DJ Schematic 3:50 PM 4 March 2010
how much do those replica bags go for? i'll be back in NY in the next couple of months and i might pick one up for the girlfriend if the price is right. i'd like to know how much i can haggle the guy down to. LOL

depends on your haggle skills... everybody sells the same shit so don't feel like you have to deal with the first person you see... also, torward the end of the day, some of them just wanna get that last sale in so you can do better... some don't really care.
All in your skills.... but NEVER pay what they ask!
djchriscruz 5:54 PM 4 March 2010
$40 is a good price for LV. You can get a Coach one for like $20-30. But they're not going to offer that price. You gotta haggle and let them know you're serious about buying. You can get better deals if you buy 2 or more.
CMOS 8:39 PM 4 March 2010
40-50 bucks on the bags. Dont go any higher. Show them the money you want to spend, wave it in there face and start to walk away they will call you back. Play the shop owners off each other..."That store there has same bag for 30$"

Shop around some bag places are better than others, hell some of em even got serial numbers.

I haven't bought anything on canal in ages, but last time I did was impressed by the extent they go to with the knockoffs. The "movado" i got had the logos and serial numbers laser etched on the band and back of the watch, it came in a movado box, and it even had the authorized dealer credit card thing with a serial number lol. The bootleg hustle is serious these days hahahaha
djchriscruz 11:25 PM 4 March 2010
Yea fakes look pretty legit these days. With bags my girl doesn't care because a bag is a bag the real one may last a little bit longer but it serves the same purpose at 1/10 the price. As long as it doesn't look fake she doesn't care. Watches look pretty legit but they dont last more than a few months before shit starts to come loose and wear off.
Caramac 2:38 PM 5 March 2010
I was curious to see some of the watches. I've started to collect a few over the years and would be curious to see some decent copies because most I see are pretty crap. But again the lady was reluctant to show me anything so I got bored and walked back up Broadway to buy some Nikes.
DJ Schematic 6:42 PM 5 March 2010
Sick! Thanks for the help fellas. I'ma see if they got any bags for the laptop too. Gotta roll up to the club in class LOL.
DJ d.range 12:02 AM 6 March 2010
I remember in the '80s/early '90's when u could buy fireworks on Canal St., in the street, they would come up to the car, my boys dad was a tow truck driver for the NYPD, he had some kind of badge he would show(he wasn't a cop) and would just tell them to throw everything in the trunk

Lol and as you walk across the dancefloor your laptop falls out the bottom of your moody bag.
O.B.1 5:10 AM 8 March 2010
you can tell if it's fake by the stitching...
djSMIRK 1:05 PM 11 March 2010
i bought 2 "timepieces" from chinatown: "breitling" and "mont blanc"

never had any issues with them and people are fooled all the time
Marx&Villain 5:11 PM 14 March 2010
