Video crossfade stops working

Product Video-SL Hardware - Computer Mac
Version Video-SL
Scratch Live
Platform - OS 10.6.2

I like to auto-crossfade between videos by using the left and right cursor keys. This works great for a certain period of time, and it then stops. It can take a few hours before it stops or it can take minutes. To make it work again I have to restart the computer. I have tried to quit Serato and reload it and it does not make the video crossfader work, it only starts to work if I restart the whole machine.

The checkbox that turns the video crossfader "using cursor keys" is selected and turning it on and off doesn't make a difference. I have tried so many things to make it work again whilst the program is still running but like I say, the only way I can make it work again is to restart the computer.

Just so you know, when it stops working, the left and right cursor keys then scroll my library list from left to right.

I thought that it was a "demo version" problem and it might go away when I bought the software, but I still have the problem now I am fully authorised.

Has anyone else had this problem?

PS - all software is up to date, using SL1 and a Macbook Pro on snow leopard 10.6.2.

Many thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,

Can you please tell me which versions of Scratch Live and Video-SL you are using? Are you using the keyboard on the MacBook Pro or do you have an external keyboard connected?
Matt Allcock 7:03 AM 2 March 2010
Scratch Live 1.9.2 (19222)
I think I'm using VSL 1.1 but not too sure how to find out.

There is no external keyboard connected and I am using the MacBook Pro's keyboard.

Just found the build number of VSL: 11101

When this happens, is the cursor focus in a text input area in Scratch Live (eg. the search box, recording file name)?
Matt Allcock 12:17 AM 3 March 2010
I thought about a cursor focus issue and no, the cursor can be focused anywhere, if it was focused in the search box surely it wouldn't scroll the library window left to right would it? It's certainly a strange one!

It is strange indeed! Would you be able to try the Video-SL 1.2 beta, as there have been many bug fixes and this issue may have been solved. You can get the 1.2 beta here -> www.serato.com (click link).

Thanks mate, I will try it out and report back :)
Michael R 3:27 AM 3 March 2010
Great, please let me know how you get on :)

I've just had it happen again, this time I restarted and it worked again only briefly. Thought I'd try it in the Scratch Live 2.0 Beta version too and it produces the exact same results.

So to recap, i'm now getting the exact problem with Video SL 1.1, VSL Beta 1.2 and Scratch Live 1.9.2 and Beta 2.0......

Just one point to note, I have just loaded scratch live back up again after waiting for about 5 minutes and the crossfader seems to be working again! Don't you just love intermittent problems!

VSL hasn't caused me a problem in terms of crashing the system or stopping working at all, so it would seem that the 1.2 beta plugin is quite stable. I like the text and image effects you can assign, nice touch!

PS I am working around the problem I have by simply switching the crossfader transition to "Latch 50" and clicked the mouse anywhere in each half of the crossfader channel - it doesn't need to be all the way over to the left or right and only requires one click to switch video channels.

Just to say I have had this happen too and have had to use cursor to manually move the 'fader' and then it seems fine. All very intermittent. I've never had to restart SL or Mac though to get it reworking

I am only getting approx 10 mins of a working state and then it stops for the rest of the night. If I restart the mac it will work but only for a short time again and then stop. I am seriously thinking about getting a midi controller to control my videos to get around it as using the mouse is quite a pain.

Hey Matt,

Do you have the caps lock key on when this happens?
Matt Allcock 12:42 PM 11 March 2010
Actually yes I do, I alway have the caps lock on..... Does that have some thing to do with it?

It does work with the caps lock on at first though. I will see what happens when I turn it off...
Michael R 10:24 PM 11 March 2010
Yes, one of the conditions that Scratch Live uses when using the cursor keys to crossfade video is that caps lock should be off. Please do try it out with it turned off and see if the issue arises again.
Matt Allcock 7:37 AM 12 March 2010
Ok will do.... got a gig tonight so I'll try it out!

that's a really weird condition by the way!
Matt Allcock 3:37 PM 12 March 2010
Wow, problem solved! Works when caps lock is off, stops working when it's on! Worked all night!

Thanks for finding the source of the problem mate, Really appreciate your help! Still can't understand why this is a "feature" in the first place though! Any ideas why it only works with the caps lock off?

Cheers
Matt

Hey Matt,

Awesome, glad we figured it out :)

This feature is here so you can still use the cursor keys to move the library.

I'll close this thread as your issue is resolved :)
