How you explain to people who don't know what are we doing?
Like a lot of people still thinks that I am playing mp3 music and somehow manually sync videos over it.

The most ridiculous thing was when a guy thought that music videos that I played are actually pressed on (Serato) vinyl record. And that each track (serato 1min marked-divided tracks) is a different song. That's how he explained to his son in front of me, showing the grooves on my record. And that's how he probably figured that I was holding that same record on the turntable for quite long time, even the music was changing.

Also when I am talking to a manager and explainin what it is, sometimes they think it's just a visuals.

Usually I show a demonstration video off my iPhone when I'm in a talk for a new job or so.

What do you put down on flyers?

I had some guy think the software generated the videos for each of the mp3s..... WOW

Explaining this is tough, I agree.... showing someone is the best solution usually

back in 2000 when i 1st got screens in my car i took it down to the hood to show my boys and one was like hey guys check this out he got a thing in his car that plays the video for whatever song he plays and started namin off random tracks for me to play.....damn idiot

This is a good topic man.... people just dont get it!

If they dont understand that an MP3 is a music file, and think you are playing that on a record, well there isnt much hope for people like that lol. Everytime i try to explain to someone that i am playing a video file from my mac and it is sending the signal thru my mixer to my turntable, i just get blank stares.

i usually say "Video DJ Hes mixing Music Videos Live" or something like that.

I think the other thing that is hard is 1 - promoting that you are spinning videos like you mentioned, to someone in just a conversation, and then 2 - trying to still explain it to them when they actually see you doing it. in either case, most people dont get it.

I call it "vinyl controlled video"

for a while we were throwing around the term "video'ist"

we have it real bad here in boston. there was a joker who pretty much RUINED the potential for the city by beating everyone to the cpu based punch
(pre-ssl...early days of vdj) and playing these horrible vsh rips, and internet rips.
not mixing... just playing them in succession.

worst part, he put a alternative to muzak in alot of these places and gave them
all his shit videos.
so, when ever you mention videos... "yeah Ive seen it... no big deal, people dont notice"

then I have to go into this big explanation... show them clips on line.
but Its paid off.

I was actually goin to do a video EXPLAINING exactly what VSL does.
why it warrants more pay, and how much more commitment being a
young video editor takes (not more than an audio editor... but that someone
who just grabbed a HD of videos)

I usually say:

Music Videos mixed with Turntables LiVE

and sometimes i add:

on (" how ever many # ") screens/tv's/flat screens/etc

people ask for a song, i say i do video only, they say idont care about the video, i say you're in the wrong place. go to cheaper venue

hahaha. i havnt come across this problem.. yet. i just say i lay music videos.. what ever i do with my turntables... scratch... backspin.. u will see the same result in the video.

some people really just dont get that.

even when I load up something and show them the record moving, and the video & sound moving with the cut, I might have well just told them the day of the rapture.
they are completely lost.

and this is scene-folk too.

haha people do come up to me and are totally amazed with what i can do with video, especially when im banging out remixes from cc ,sh,yr. blows their mind..

i got a hold of a video from 3 stArs and a sun. with the flinstone/bedrock video. people went ape-shit... couldnt believe it. good stuff.

lol i had some people over to the house the other night and i was mixin vids and we were all drinkin and like an hour and a half into it someone was finally like.....wait YOUR DOIN THAT....lol i was like no shit, no im just THAT good of a dj that i can play a song to a muted DVD
