If so, how are they? Do they get messy?
I enjoy cooking and I want to add something like this to my kitchen.

Oh I won't use it everyday. I'm not a fan of fried food but I do enjoy it from time to time. However I do LOVE fried chicken and I would like to season my own chicken and fry it. I just don't want the grease to pop all over me.

2 things on fryers.
1) make sure that it can be drained from the bottom of the unit vs trying to tip it to drain it
2) make sure that the interior baskets can be washed outside the unit.
You will pay a bit more for these features but trust me, don't get one without them.

I have a frydaddy. It's pretty old but it gets the job done. I try not to use it very often though. I used it for the first time in months last night to make some fries and was pretty disgusted by the smell of all that oil. The fries came out perfect however. It's pretty easy to clean also.

Do it outside... the popping of hot oil only happens for stuff on the surface. if you put a frozen chicken in and ice comes off, it will pop as long as it is at the top.

With fried ice cream you have to make it hard as a rock... I dont remember what you roll it in, but after you roll it in something wet you roll it in coconut so it doesnt make a mess. then you dip it in the oil

I have the WARING DIGITAL DEEP FRYER. I tried to find a pic, but I can only find pics with the analog dials. You can get it in William Sonoma stores. You have to take the pan out to drain it, other than that, it heats up to 450 degrees within 3-4 minutes!... and it's super easy to clean. Once you treat the baskets with oil, they can be put in the dishwasher on the top rack.
I've only made chicken wings in mine so far, but i love it.

dont get it twisted, i dont deep fry a lot.. i just make sure that when i get an appliance, i get the best one in my budget
with this fryer, you can drain the oil into its own resevoir which makes cleaning all the parts so much easier (they are even dishwasher safe... the heating element is excluded of course)
it heats fast and keeps the temperature in check
i have no bad things to say about it

lol just found this interesting
On February 9, 2009, the secret recipe returned to KFC's Louisville headquarters in a more secure, computerized vault.[18]
In 1983, writer William Poundstone examined the recipe in his book Big Secrets. He reviewed Sanders' patent application, and advertised in college newspapers for present or former employees willing to share their knowledge.[19] From the former he deduced that Sanders had diverged from other common fried-chicken recipes by varying the amount of oil used with the amount of chicken being cooked, and starting the cooking at a higher temperature (about 400 °F (200 °C)) for the first minute or so and then lowering it to 250 °F (120 °C) for the remainder of the cooking time. Several of Poundstone's contacts also provided samples of the seasoning mix, and a food lab found that it consisted solely of sugar, flour, salt, black pepper and monosodium glutamate (MSG). He concluded that it was entirely possible that, in the years since Sanders sold the chain, later owners had begun skimping on the recipe to save costs. Following his buyout in 1964, Colonel Sanders himself expressed anger at such changes, saying:
“ That friggin' ... outfit .... They prostituted every goddamn thing I had. I had the greatest gravy in the world and those sons of bitches they dragged it out and extended it and watered it down that I'm so goddamn mad.[

they don't even use real chickens...
they're some kind of wierd geneticly altered creature and they call them M-16's (I'm not making this up) and they never move their whole life, their feet are stapped in until they get slaughtered in a giant high pressure steam vaccum after 6 weeks...
plus the gravy and biscuits are made from hydrogenated vegetable oil, which never leaves your system because the human body isn't capable of naturally expelling it...
-you will die soon enough if you continue to eat this garbage!

It stays in your blood stream, and just collects...
An extra hydrogen molecule is added to the chemically altered fat,(similar to a plastic) and your body doesn't recognize it as being natural.
It's against the law in some countries.
And you don't necessarily appear "fat", but the inside of your arteries are choked and full of this stuff... It's in almost everything, if you start reading the labels of stuff. (just about anything made by nabisco, etc.)
I'm not trying to preach to anyone, but I discovered this a short time ago and thought others should know...

I'm not a defender of KFC by any stretch but they, like virtually every other corporate food giant, began phasing out all trans fats a few years ago. In KFC's case, it was 2006. The biggest change was switching the cooking medium from shortening to canola oil.
And I did just read the label on my peanut butter. It's trans fat free (Kraft brand), as are virtually all margarines.

it's good that people are more aware about trans fat now, but companies are still deceiving the consumer and bending the rules of the system.
some products now use the term 'modified canola oil' or 'modified milk ingredients' for example to avoid using the term hydrogenated.
and also products can state they are "trans fat free" when it fact they still contain hydrogenated oil. it's just a small enough amount that, by law, they can state it's 'free' of trans fat.
I am actually looking at my Knorr Sidekicks Cheddar & Sour Cream noodle side dish which on the front boldly reads "Trans Fat Free" but in fact, "hydrogenated soybean oil" is in the ingredient list. AND the daily nutritional value for Trans Fat is 0%. I am not making this shit up
