just wondering how all you go about making a mix before you begin recording.

Just been talking to a few different people, some saying they just decide they'll record and then make it up as they go. Others have their tracklist planned and other every track/mix planned.

Thought it'd be interesting to see how most go about it.

I usually just make a crate in SSL of the song I want to use and make it up as I go. Although usually the first 2-3 songs and the last few I already have decided on. I'll also occasionally mark a couple of songs I specifically want to mix together.

i also got a crate for tunes for a mixtape... usually just chuck whatever in there i think i might use, and once there's enough stuff in there, it's a freestyle mix for promo stuff.

when i make a mixtape for me to bump in my ride, it's another story with that crate... every track and mix is planned with cue points and loops and mix points and stuff...

unrehearsed, unplanned, first take, no edits. i've always approached "mixtapes" like as if I'm playing an 80 minute set live somewhere. This is how I sound in the studio making a mix, this is how I sound live at the club - exactly the same.

i do set up a crate, but my last crate for my most recent mix had 75 tracks in it. I only ended up using 15 of them (house mix).

typically ill start by just messing around practicing, then ill have a string of stuff that sounds great and my mixing is on point so ill decide to record, then ill make a crate and add the ones that sounded good, then ill put WAAAAYYYY to much thought into it and start adding more tracks that i think would be good additions or work musically, then after i get done overthinking and basically ruining my track selection, i set up to record and hit the record button and typically lose the ability to even make the simpilest mix, i typically end up messing up every transition from then on and not likeing the flow of the tracks i picked out, usually ill work on it for about 2 or 3 days (spare time not all day) before i get fustrated stop trying to record, erase the crate then go freestyle again sounding awsome.......i cant mix under the pressure of recording

I'm the same way, i can mix flawless all day and night but as soon as i hit record my mixing goes to shit! lol go figure!

I've done the exact same thing many times. I'm a good few months overdue to record a mix to put out because the last few times I've tried I've done this.

omg same here i thought i was the only one. Ive been plannin to do my next mix for months and for some reason it just gets pushed back, Its like something about the fact that your being recorded. The one time i was able to record a great mix and forget about it being recorded when i went to export it in audacity, the program fucked up and i lost the entire mix which left me a bit discouraged to do another one for a few weeks.

ive heard that the solution to this is just record everything you do and eventually youll just be used to being recorded and stop worring about it

storage been cheap now in days, i record my self every time i play. It's a habit. if i dont record my self i feel weird

If I plan it I normally end up messing up too much. If its unplanned I normally do just fine.

wow this hit me HARD last night, ive decided to start recording my stuff to post on here for critisism or enjoyment, no show off just shits and giggles. So im mixing last night and went through a quick mix of random shit and thought wow that worked well, played through it again twice PERFECT im talkin head on sounds awsome nailed it....i stopped and started messing with my webcam and recording stuff, finally found a position so it dosent look like total shit hit record...........FUCK UP, im like wow howd i fuck that up i nailed it 3 times, ill try it again....and again.....and again.....i tried for about an hour and couldnt hit the 1st transition, i finally said fuck it and turned off the cam and BAM hit it perfectly, and again, perfectly, turned the cam back on .....FUCK UP.

I think what im going to end up doing is telling my GF how to turn on my recording shit and have her randomly turn it on without my knowledge while im mixing
