This was bound to happen (questioning one-hit wonder status, that is), but I gotta stand up for the Dream Warriors. They had some other hits ("Wash Your Face In My Sink" anyone?) especially here in Canada. Plus the album both of those tracks was on is a classic.

They were probably only a one hit wonder in the States I guess though. I was actually waiting for someone to mention Maestro Fresh Wes, "Let Your Backbone Slide," but again, up here he had more than one hit and that first album of his is a certified hip-hop classic (again, up here that is).

I think this whole post is confusing.. In my eyes a One Hit WOnder is someone who has just one BIG hit that makes the pop charts. Example. Candyman-Knockin The Boots, Paperboy-Ditty,Ahmad-Back In The Day.

Honestly Del has never had a hit record so there's no way he could be a one hit wonder. Del has produced alot of "classic material" Maybe this is what you mean when you say " chock full of hits"? I'll just say classic material

415in was a decent album. I don't know if any of 415's cuts were actually hits (lifestyle of a gangsta, maybe?), but it was an OK listen.

I thought TCD's album was great...The Princess of Poetry, TCD is in the Front. But I think that funky expedition was really the only track that got air play though, so I think you may be right.

Ok, here's a couple more I think--

KMC Kru - The Devil Came Up to Michigan
RBL Posse - Don't Give Me No Bammer

Well, hiphop wasn't so pervasive in the pop culture back then, so in this case here, there has to be some duality, and the reason is just because it didn't take off on the pop charts doesn't mean it wasn't a hit in the hiphop culture.

I agree. btw spair that mixtape you did with pone call "hits from the 80's" is one of my faves.
rabblerouser 4:55 PM - 26 October, 2006
i don't really care about the definition of hit versus classic so much, i'm just enjoying the process of reaching back deep into my brain for some old jams.

where are you at osiris? the bay?

i got a hug from one of the conscious daughters after seeing them open for the coup a couple years ago. i honestly don't remember which one, but they were very gracious and just happy to be performing.

i agree that 415 was just a decent album.

speaking of no face, i know he's got lots of 'classic material' and that he's produced a ton of hits, but does anyone think it's fair to say that 45 king's '900 number' makes him a one hit wonder as a solo artist?

anyone remember cpo? or that blonde who had a single produced by dre? was her name terry b or something like? i just remember her horrible lyrics like, "i'm not black, i'm white, so believe the hype!" that got much play on yo! and cmc.

related to this, maybe it should be another thread, but does anyone have memories of hating now classic joints when they first came out. i won't front, here are some that i really disliked at first:
-o.p.p.
-they reminisce over you
-juice (know the ledge)
-i get around
-g thang
-it takes two
-backseat of my jeep
-just to get a rep
-method man
-player's club
-hypnotize

i can't believe i just admitted that.
Osiris 6:16 PM - 26 October, 2006
I lived in the bay years ago. Moved to the east coast in 92, but back in those days IMP was the shit when they hit the streets with their first and very hard to find EP. Then you didn't hear from them for like 3 years until they released their 1st LP which I thought was dope.

I thought CPO was nice also. Some of my favorites cuts off their album--

Ballad of a Menace
CPOsis
Somethin' Like Dis

but the whole album was tight IMO.
uno seis 6:41 PM - 26 October, 2006
Interesting that you guys are sayin Richie Rich (or 415) - Sideshow is his biggest hit. I woulda thought "Let's Ride" was his one hit (that was the SHIT when I was in 9th grade).

I guess a lot of this depends on your age/location as well. Different from those one-hit wonders that blew up no matter where you're from - like "Good Vibrations"

I'll move to the next point on your tangent...

I hated hypnotize too. It is still one of my least liked Biggie tunes. Also hated Keith Murray - The Most Beautifulest Thing In This World.

Well... I grew up in Cali and was living in the bay area when this track came out, so I really wouldn't consider myself an outsider. ;)

The lyrics for that track were actually written a few years earlier. It was originally titled "D-Nice Rocks the House" and was a released on the "Boogie Down Productions - Man & His Music LP" in 1988. It had a different rhythm and flow, and D-Nice certainly sounds younger. I actually liked that older version better, but that's just me.

i have a question seriously, who decides what's a hit and what isn't? there are many rappers that have been making really good shit for years, but haven't been hits. and i think that this is somehting that anyone can argue either way. as i am reading this page, there are a shitloads of songs that bring back memories, but most of them were not "hits" by the record chart's standards. i am a die-hard hip hop fan and have been for around 20 years so i remember(just like everyone else) all these songs. its all def. good music tho. peace.

Thus, many artist on this thread are invalid. One hit song does not validate an artist as a one hit wonder.

Yeah but the original question was not about number one songs. It was about one hit wonders. Some of the artists mentioned had other hits. Sure if you talk about Brotherhood Creed then you would know helluva but who would drop in 50/50 Love? On the other hand, I would play In My House but I could just as easily get away with All Night Long.
