I was very excited to see that the folks over at Serato created a preset for Handbrake 0.9.4 for Windows that is customized for Serato.

I encoded a full Promo Only Hot Video (January 2010) last night and as an example, noticed on the following songs that notorious horizontal lines.

- Chapter 1, 2 = Lady GaGa - Bad Romance
- Chapter 3, 4 = Iyaz - Replay

So after checking out the Serato forums, as well as the Handbrake Wiki (trac.handbrake.fr) there seems to be a simple fix to this.

- Deinterlace = Slower
or
- Decomb = Default

So I have two questions:

1. Looking at the Handbrake Wiki sounds like Decomb is a better choice than Deinterlace.

"Decomb only deinterlaces frames that are visibly interlaced. This saves time, and makes it safe, usually, to leave it on all the time. It won't destroy the detail in progressive sources the way Deinterlace will, and should be faster than "Slow" or "Slower". "

Serato thoughts?

2. Why wasn't either of these included in the Custom Serato preset?

Thanks in advance guys!

We were having issues saving these settings to the Preset/MAC and PC.

I have always set it to De-interlace - Slow. Works well for me and I dont see a difference with Decomb other than it being a little faster when converting the videos.

Either should work well and not cause issues.

I was told the 0.9.4 preset has been sorted now:

I hope so, cause I've just coverted 5,000 videos!

Valter Almeida,
Hey, thank for trying to help, but unfortunetly I only speak English. I have no idea on what your video is trying to explain or show. Do you have one in English?

JBunks,
How did you videos come out? Even with the latest HB preset, I was getting the lines across the screen and had to set "deinterlace" to "Slower".

Just out of curiosity, are you experiencing any computer performance issues with this encoded videos? I have another thread opened on major CPU utilization and videos being choppy, but it's only in Serato. Works fine in Virtual DJ, Quicktime, and other apps. I am not too technical when it comes to video, but I wonder if it's how Serato is decoding the MPEG container. At this point, we've ruled out that it's not a laptop hardware issue, because Serato's test videos don't present the same issue. Only the ones that I've decoded in Handbrake with their preset.

Videos seems to be ok. I acutally used a PC running vista to convert. When i converted the videos the first time *yawn* using my Macbook Pro, the audio occassionally slipped out of sync. Only really tested with the latest promo only dvd as been tagging and adding artwork. Finished copying last night and will be able to give a it a good test over the next week or so.

JBunks,

So how are things looking? Did you have to turn interlace = slower on? If I don't, and just use the preset "as is", I get the horizontal lines.

If you have a Mac, I recommend getting MPEG Streamclip to convert. The program is free but you will need to pay Apple like 19 bucks for the Mpeg 2 plugin. Definitely worth it. This of course is from individually ripped vobs. I use Mac the Ripper to get them to individual files. Some of them were also archived from before I switched over to Mac and I used DVD Decrypter. But it is much faster than Handbrake.
Drag and drop your vob into the main window, ctrl i to get the file info (frame rate, upper or lower field, etc), and then go to file and export to mp4. Don't worry about the quality slider. Set your data rate to anywhere between 2000 and 4000 kbps depending on the file size output. Type in the frame rate info from the info box (29.97 or 25), leave frame blending and better downscaling unchecked. Deselect interlaced scaling and reinterlace chroma. Select deinterlace video. On frame size this is purely choice, but I always choose the "(unscaled)" option. Generally with vobs it's going to be 720x480. Oh and compression is h.264, sound is mp4 aac stereo auto at 224. Preview a few frames of your video before you convert to check for lines. If you click on List at the top of the page and then Batch list first before you start with vobs, you can add them to the batch list and let them all run instead of doing them one by one.

For Handbrake on Promo Only dvds you need to adjust the key frame settings that were originally used. Here are the settings that worked decently for me. Thanks DJMark for helping me get them sorted.
Video: codec, h264; FPS, Same as source; Average bitrate, your choice but between 2000-4000 will be fine (and it is adjustable for each file).
Audio: AAC, Stereo, 48, 224
Advanced: remove the "Current x264 Advanced Option String" and replace with this string (removing quotes) "min-keyint=20:keyint=20:ref=3:bframes=2:subq=9:trellis=2:b-adapt=2:
direct=auto:me=tesa:analyse=all:no-dct-decimate=1"
Up top under Picture Settings: Size, again I choose to go with the source size, so if it's 720x480 I leave it at that size. Anamorphic is none. Cropping for source size is Custom and 0 all the way around. Some people choose to leave automatic cropping on, but I want the full video. Now switch to Filters: Detelecine and Decomb are both set to default. If you slide to deinterlace make sure it is off and then slide it back to decomb. Everything else under Filters will be off. You will want to save this preset and make sure that when you do that you Use Picture Size "current" and check Use Current Picture Filters.
Also when doing full DVDs with Handbrake make sure that you set your chapter lengths at the top and name your files. For example Chapters 1 through 2 of Promo Only dvd such and such is the intro and mix for xxxx.mp4 under Destination.
Hope that helps.

Doesn't any one use elgato turbo it's super fast ,,,,,my boy did two promo only urban video dvd's in on hour .........thats about 70 vob's converted to mpeg4 in 1 hour quality seem good

Chris

Yeah all looks ok, no lines. Deinterlace was set to slow.

Video gets "stuttery" after playing for a bit tho when I have the quality output set to high. Never had this issue when using Virtual Vinyl. Only difference is I'm running off a USB (FAT 32) drive as opposed to firewire 800 which was formatted for Mac.

Hopefully when I copy all this back across to the firewire drive the issue should go away!

Forgot to mention that on MPEG Streamclip I have a preset there as well which set the Frame Rate to current and the key frames to an average of 20. You can set that under the Options tab next to the Codec.

carter,
thanks for the great step by step preset instructions! Lastly, I am confused as can be with getting the track titles from Promo Only March 2010 Club properly and efficiently into the titles. Can you please provide a step by step for this as well? I found your other instructions very helpful, however this part is where I scratch my head:)

I've downloaded the track listings from the Promo Only site and opened them up in excel, picture shows it all...

Regards,

JAM

I can't open your linked filed. But when i do mine I'll select say Chapter 1 through chapter 1. If there's an intro I'll do chapter 1 through 2. Under destination I set the folder I'm importing to and then I change the /xxxx.mp4 to however I want the song tagged. I prefer Artist - Title, but everyone wants it different. What you want is something that can be picked up by a tag generator. Once I have those set and it scans the file it opens the file in metax and makes a list of the files I have coming in. I have metax set to read artist - title and make that the tag. Once the whole disc is done, I go to metax and make sure everything looks right on the tags and then I click on write. That writes the tag information and I'm done. But for actually naming the files, I do that manually in the destination part of Handbrake.
If you're on Windows I'd do the same thing. Name everything in Handbrake and once you're done open up Mp3Tag and choose the folder you just used to import to as your source. There is a file to tag function there. You just set it to however you named your files and it will convert them. Just make sure once you process them that you save the tags too. Hope that answers your questions.
