The next dj who comes up to me and says they just bought a 1tb drive full of video for 500$...Im going to spit on you. Everyone wants something for cheap/free. How about us guys who PAID for our videos? This is what I dont understand...I knew video was going to be big...back in the 90s, but there wasnt an efficient way to make it happen, that would be cost worthy...so I started buying dvds, signed up with promo only and started archiving my stuff. for almost 8 years I did this. Thousands of dollars were spent, and I wasnt even spinning videos. Now some nucklehead wants to all of a sudden jump on the video thing, buy a hard drive and thinks overnight hes going to be spinnin videos? Rediculous. Then these guys see that I know what Im doing, and ask me if I would walk them thru the process of wires, settings etc...Public Service Announcement from me...if you think for one moment Im going to give you anything for free, you are out of your mind. You already cut a corner by purchasing a pirated hard drive. If you want my help its goin to be 1000 bux for my time....if you dont got it then you arent ready to spin video. Dont be a douchebag. And for you whores who sell hard drives full of video, fuck you.

I know a few who have... not gonna mention names but they are on this forum.
I think it is total BS to sell a hard drive of videos.
At this point it is for the almighty $$$ for them.
I didn't get into DJ-ing for money. I am just grateful I can make a living off of something I love to do.

I've had a number of people hit me up for videos. They don't get it. I tell them to subscribe to a real VJ service like I did.

I spent months ripping and tagging my collection to mpeg1 and then did it all over again when vob was supported.
Around the clock getting up at 2am to load the next one and teaching my oldest daughter how to load the next disc for ripping when she got home from school and every 4 hours when they were going to mpeg, it was forever it seemed.
Going to vob wasn't as bad because I could copy and paste the tags, but still one big suck pill.
Had loads of people ask for copy, some pretty sweet offers, some extreme attempts too.
I had this multi op approach me to do video mixing for his company who had never seen beat mixed video before. Had many official meetings, even a trip to Boston's Longwood Events for a live interview/demo. Then he asked me for a copy of my collection and that was the last I ever heard of him.
Have to figure that collection has cost me upwards of 15k by now and nobody gets it at any price. Several different series and boatloads of store bought video not available turned me into a video junkie of sorts, but I got it.
It is disappointing to see the free/cheap availability after spending that kind of money.
Even from the standpoint of owning nearly every PO disc there is and now they offer the Classic series that cuts the expense to next to nothing for the best of the whole series I paid full price for, it hurts.
That goes for those who blew their brains out on early beta tape, Laser disc and Rock America series too. Those guys paid big bucks to do video back then and has to hurt seeing what it is now.
Just gotta protect the vj business or it's gone, plain and simple.

I totally agree! A dude I know posted something like that the other day on Facebook. I almost fell out of my seat. This club propositioned me about a year ago. They couldn't afford me to do video (don't know how, the place is jam packed near wrigley field, with 70 TVs) so anyhow they asked how much for my collection. I said let's not even talk unless we are talking in the 10K range. More of a joke. They were like we were thinking about 500-1000. Needless to say I told them to 'wash their ass'. (and that is exactly how I said it.)

True! One thing I have found in the recent market is that the availability of content is starting to drive prices down. Way down. Not just for me and the folks that I know but I've heard this even in reference to guys like Roonie G. 3 years ago it was extremely hard to get content...Now for 10 bucks you get 100 vids a month.

I think skill, programming and exclusive content is what is going set video DJ's apart from each other. Because yeah... anyone can sign up for next to nothing for a video DJ pool and POOF... they're a video DJ... believe me.... I see it here in Vegas...

oh... i got a great one... grab a stogie.
so.
a local guy, we've both been in it since mid nineties.
met through Masspool service.
weve chit-chatted, hung out, tossed eachother a few gigs.
Jan 2009
he emails my buddy who is NOT into video, asking him how video is when I do it.
(my buddy of course puts me up on a pedastal like all friends do)
he then asks, do you think josh would let me copy his hard drive?
my boy says no, just on basic principle, and conversations we've had to date.
fast forward to December 2009, a year later.
this guy CALLS THE OWNER OF THE CLUB I work at.
Tells him he's my boy, and he does video now as well and throws his
local radio station card in the mix... So, the owner comes to me and
asks if i know him... at first I say sure (because I didnt know what happend in Jan09)
so, apparently these two dudes still talk.
he went right on craigslist a week before calling the club and bought a TB drive
full of videos.... and on top of that he proceeded to tell the club owner that having
a dj from radio _______FM will bring much more people than a DJ who still uses turntables, thats old no one cares about that anymore...
It just speaks in volumes about what kinda people do this on the whole.
UNETHICAL.
yeah, its a game, its a hustle bla bla bla... but breaking some of these codes is
right up there with instant-craigslist wavies.
thankfully the owner heard the story and is a "you are only as strong as your word of followed by the actions" mentality too,,,, and he's gettin no love.
I find alot of these guys are looking to video, the same way sub-par djs look at serato.
hey... this will propel me into the next level... give me an edge on everyone else.
Well, Ive seen some of these video sets.
and they are just as ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz as their music sets.

That is why I pray serato will never go auto-sync.
And fuck all the guys selling hard drives fulls of videos. If you are a dj with some morals you wouldn't do that shit, just to make a few hundred and flood the market with wavies with crap quality vids.
I'd like to see if the vids are top quality, but I'm betting they are all over the place, some youtube rips, mtv rips and the majority are probably from pools which suck because those are better than the youtube tv rips.
Selling hdd's full of videos to make a quick buck is fucking wrong and just ruins it for all the hard working folks who actually bought their shit and took the time to encode their videos correctly.
