Thinking about getting the 57

Hey guys, I'm thinking about getting the 57 at the end of the month.. Was gonna get the 56s since I wanna get a good scratch mixer.. and all the research points to it.. but since I can get the 57 for a few quid more I was thinking what the hell.. (i don't have setato but I do own another dvs already).
all I really want is to be able to spin hiphop with some effects.. so I don't particularly care about what happens at NAMM next week.. i dont wanna produce music or mixer with 3 channels.. but what I do care about is what the plan from serato is with the current serato platform (ssl1 and 3).. From what I can gather reading the website/forum is that ssl1 and ssl3 both run on the same serato program.. is this correct?? (i cant see 2 links to download serato.. so im assuming it is) if this is right then it pretty safe to assume if i get the 57 i will have plenty of upgrades to enjoy down the line for ssl1...
do you guys agree? will the software continue to get upgrades for a while yet??
thanks in advance for any ideas...

if u can get a 57 then get it... there are a few issues with buttons been not as responsive after a while, but it's easily resolved with DeoXit (so i've read on these boards). and if you're really not too worried about NAMM next week, you're gonna enjoy the mixer even more. the faders will "never" bleed, which is great if you scratch, and the cut is almost instantaneous. it's the same faders as in the 56s.
also, ssl1, ssl3 and the 57 all use the same version of the SSL and all have free updates for life. basically most of the updates are due to dj's on these forums requesting changes/add ons to the current version. and any firmware updates for the 57 are also free. the last firmware update included a change for the curve on the up faders (if i remember correctly), because some EDM dj's suggested that the curve was too sharp for smooth/longer blends... pretty dope hey!
the effects on the mixer are pretty standard, but used properly, they're great. and they are not limited to Serato use, because the effects are IN the mixer as opposed to being in the program.
All in all, the 57 is perfect for the club, studio and mobile environments. And the support from the Rane guys/gals are great, and the guys on the boards (for the most part) are helpful with issues you might have.
So good luck with your decision.

One other thing.. I know it may sound like over kill... but the N.I. kontrol X1 allows users to control ssl and ssl3.. I wonder does the ssl1 that comes with the 57 also allow this midi controler to work with it.. as oppose to the on board midi contols.. I wanna have both setups with midi control and i realise the the 57 is a closed system... just curious if I could operate ssl1 within the 57 standalone with the Kontrol X1.. maybe should ask over there

the program is MIDI mappable, so regardless of which version you have (1,3 or 57sl), any MIDI controller works... i'm sure you'll need to map Serato to a separate page on the X1 though.
walshyboy
5:41 PM - 12 January, 2010
nope sounds good.. just in case i preferred the midi on the X1 wanted to be sure the 57 will interact with it just like your normal ssl.. so i presume you can somehow deactivate all midi functions on the 57, and bang away on the X1/57 as if you were just using a 56/ssl1 + X1 right???
cheers again bra..

don't think the 57's MIDI will deactivate, but u will still be able to map anything (even if it's pre-mapped to 57) to another MIDI controller as per 56/ssl3 setup.
the guys here use external MIDI controllers to save on the button wear on their 57's, so i've seen it's possible... if you want i can post links to youtube vids to show u 57's and an external controller.
holla.

and just before you jump into a 57sl, i hear that at NAMM they might be revealing effects for ssl1/3 users too.

sound mate.. saw one just now on youtube where the guy was using a 57 and a nanopad.. ok makes sense.. regarding effects, you were saying before there is a few onboard effect with the 57.. read it in a few other places too.. but the probable effects announcement from namm.. this will be in the software for the 57 too right?

that's right...
if u want, u can download the latest version to start setting up your crates, and getting stuck into making cue points, build overviews and loops and stuff, in the offline player. that way, if you do decide to get a 57, you're all ready to go.

looks like the 56s and sl3 is the way to go after today's announcement of 2.0... bridged with ableton 8 of course.
i guess that 'future proof' was a sales slogan.

haha.. perhaps.. I did read the only way to get 3 decks was to get the sl3 alright.. and that there wont be an internal deck otherwise... not cool if you need that.. but I dont really.. i just want the sampler.. one way or another im getting the 56s/57 at the end of the month.. ive been checking the pro's and con's AGAIN this morning.. the girlfriend is sick listening to me at this stage so i had better hurry up and decide :-)
with this news is that you do have the feeling that the sl1 hardware may be getting left behind.. albeit the s/w for 2.0 is for both.. but im reading in some forums that unless you have the sl3/ttm57sl the news mean nothing.. he didnt eloaborate... wonder why having the 57 now would warrant that statement? i thought its pretty much the ssl1 but w/sampler midi...

actually the "So we only get 2 decks still??" is a pretty good post.. i cant see any issues with still going for the 57..

it's still a pretty dope mixer... if i was in your situation, not needing the 3rd deck ability, i'd get a 57sl.

Just saw this too in another forum from a mod so i guess that answers my question above too...
The plan is to have multi-client Core Audio and ASIO drivers for the SL-3, TTM57-SL and SIXTY-EIGHT. This will allow Scratch Live and Ableton to share the physical outputs on those devices during simultaneous use.
good enough... i think..... fucking nerd chat :-)

Do you really think so? I think it is at least a year from now that there will be a 58 OR a four channel sound card.

What's gong on man, heard a lot about you, been working with Johnny, mike and unique for about a year now. Mike was already talking about getting the 68. I am picking up a new setup tomorrow actually two 1210 Mk5s with a TTM 56 cases, needles, slip matts the whole 9 for 1200 in philly....only problem is I just found out the TTM56 doesnt have xlr outputs/midi controller. I thought it was the 57 with out the inputs but i was way off. Now I am stuck i am not sure what to do about a mixer. I was going to go straight for the 57 because I can get it for 1150 from a dealer I know but as you know... a lot of these clubs have the pioneers in there so I would have to bring an sl1 too....any suggestions guys? Good seeing you around dynamite hope all is well.

Yea I hear you, I ended up just going with the 57. Used it at a gig last night worked great actually using it again tonight. I like all the shortcuts and controls for serato very good choice. I might just add an sl1 or sl3 down the line for clubs that dont have the RANE.

yeah, I would suggest picking up an SL-1 or SL-3 also. Unless you feel like going thru the hassle of unhooking equipment and every spot that doesn't have SSL hardware to hookup your 57 lol

Is'nt the cross fader on the 57 different from the cross fader on the 56? Ive heard a few people say that they like the fader on the 56 more than the fader on the 57.. WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?

5:57 PM - 7 February, 2010
Hey Shameless... i went for the 56s after all.. and kopped an X1 to handle midi for me.. im gonna pick up SL3 when my next check comes in... have to say I understand now why rane is the shit.. but one thing i kind of find strange is that the little torsion spring underneath kind of sticks ever so slightly on the slider bar when i move the fader really slowly.. not that there is any need to move it over like that for me, but compared to the line faders its slightly different.. i took off the faceplate for a look.. so i can see that little spring the follows the fader underneath dragging... its not bad enough to want to contact support (i imported mines from germany so im not ever sure who to call).. just want to throw it out here to see if anybody has had some kind of similar thing going on..
DJ Shameless
6:22 PM - 7 February, 2010
that spring is there just to give a bit of stiffness to the fader. u could either grease it up, or there's a tutorial on how to un-hook the spring completely. Just note that if you un-hinge it, and use it in a club environment, the bass could cause the slider to move and completely cut out the sound.
good call on the sl3 btw.

yeah i did a search there and found a link to scratchworx all about the spring and modding it etc.. put my mind at ease.. if it bothers me enough i mite swap it out for one of the line faders..

How come you imported it? Isn´t it cheaper in the states?

I'm in Ireland... paid 660 euro, roughly $900..... in the UK they are £700 sterling.. which is nearly 800 euro.. if you get stuff from the states u get stung bad for duty.. so even if u pick one up for 700 dollars, you probably looking at another 100 bucks to get it sent and maybe 200 on excise duty.. i got one cheap

recently sold my TTM56 and SL-1 to upgrade to the TTM57SL. Can't say enough about the 57... very happy I went this way. Not only do I have less stuff to carry & set-up, but the signal from the 57 seems a lot cleaner & stronger, as well. Still learning all of the ins & outs, but so far I'm lovin' it!

make sure you buy it from an authorized dealer and preferably guitar center so you can have your time to test and confirm your hardware is solid if not return and ask for another one.
The reason i am telling this is there are tons of b stock refurbished and serviced and return in a new box items floating all over the place.
i had a bleeding crossfader chipped screws that had been went thru a black sharpie and crashing 57 2 days ago from guitar center "BRAND NEW IN BOX" :)
next day morning 11 am i was the first person opened the store and replaced the mixer with another brand new one...
all i am saying box or a sealed packaging does NOT reflect item is brand new
good luck

Ordered my 57 today as well. Not much of a scratch dj at all, so two decks plus the sampler cells will do fine for me.
