The Producers Thread

I did a quick search and couldn't find any threads specifically related to production, so thought I'd start one.
So this is somewhere to post all your latest efforts and works in progress. Hopefully we'll get some CONSTRUCTIVE criticism!
All genre's welcome. No remixes please, just original works
I got into production not so long ago, really struggling to find the time to practice, so i've literally only made a few tunes. It's fucking hard!!
Here's my latest effort, made today. It still needs a lot of work....
Genre: Progressive/Tech House

J0be, checking out your tracks on Soundcloud and just from the waveforms I can tell, you need to put a compressor on your master buss. It'll help bring out everything and get a more consistent level.

Thanks Sniffles, I tried master compression once before, but because I didnt really know what I was doing it sounded weird. I'm meeting up with a producer mate tomorrow, I'll get him to show me how it's done properly.

Some nice tracks, I really like Lime and Gona Leave You, some nice melodies, had my head noddin. I guess overall the production could be better, but that's probably the hardest part to get down, making it sound professional, with tight EQs & mastering etc.
Keep up the good work mang!
Where do you find the guitar samples, or is that you playing?

Gonna leave you is from the Led Zepplin song Gonna leave you.
The lime one is from the group Lime, i dont have the vinyl in front of me to see which track.
The losing hand one is a harry belafonte sample.
Pitbull remix was Eric Clapton.
Everything else were soundfonts and synths.
Im absolutely horrible at mastering eq'ing and mixing stuff down. I usually pass that part off to a buddy of mine.

I really like this track... you say its undone but its something I would play, nice and mellow with a bad a$$ bass like unlike any tech house song I've ever heard.
I'm using reason 4, can you tell me how you got to know the software? I haven't gone through this whole thread so I sorry if I'm repeating anything. You said getting decent samples was a the key to better sounding stuff, where should I start looking for samples? I'm a newb at reason so all of my stuff sounds like an 8 year old playing with $10 toy, thats why I ask. (cuz if my productions sounded like that prog/tech house you made, I would be pretty stoked)

Thanks man, it's a great feeling when someone likes a tune you've made! I learned by watching video's on youtube, and if you search, you'll be able to find full Reason tutorial packs online (you might even find a torrent). I found one for reason 3, really helped me out, very professional video's. Like here for example:
found after a quick google search: www.reason4tutorial.com
For samples, just search online, you can usually tell which ones are decent just by the quality of the website, here's some good ones:
www.vengeance-sound.com
www.samplemagic.com
I paid for mine, so worth it. It's all about searching and finding some decent sources. Then finding the cheapest way to get your hands on them!
And when you're looking for samples, try an get samples with loops...i.e synth loops, tops loop, drum loops. They're great when you're just learning, makes it easier to put tunes together and have them sound professional. Just be sure to add your own flare and fuck around with it. :)

Mixing down takes time to learn. Mastering is something we will never do. There are a small number of engineers who actually master albums.
When I mix, I find where all my sounds are coming in and loop 2 bars. I adjust levels and eq/compress from there. Prior to mixing down, I make sure all of my levels are below 6dB. Drums below 9 and bass below 11. These are all negative numbers of course. Then after eq, I throw a multiband compressor and then a limiter over that on the master channel.

Thanks J0be. I'm checking yours out right now. I'm liking this "Spunky Backpack" alot. I'm not much into dubstep, but that one does sound decent.
Man, this "Argue Barmies" IS HOT AS F**K. I'm putting this into my early house set if you don't mind. =)

StephenGallagher, this one is a little weird for me! It's like I said earlier, I'm not much of a dubstep listener. So my ear for it isn't so great. But it's a decent song tho.

Ok, so I really have no business putting this up but I had some friends over while I was working in this and somewhere through it we had it on repeat and was doing the Jersey Shore fist pump and running in place. I'm really not surprised we didn't all punch eachother in the face.
The track isn't really anywhere yet and its pretty much just moving shit around right now to see what might work.
I kinda wanted to try something different away from a housey sound but it will end up with it anyways because I've tried some different synths and shit over it and it kinda works.... but who cares about that.... it was just this that I had.
It'll be a booty shaker, thats for sure hahahahaha

All in all, it was just a fun time doing this, even though it was only like 30 mins of work, it was a fun 2 hours moving things around and acting like a clown with my buddies.

I just made this right now, there's 3 sounds on the first file. The first sound sounds cool and usuable for trance. The 2nd & 3rd are some trippy bells.

In this one, I was trying to create that Afrojack sound, and ended up creating that cheap toy ray gun that little kids use. The kind you buy at the swapmeet. lol It also sounds like a car alarm. lol I can probably make some Dubstep out of this! lol

lexiconpro.com
I gotta say, for only $230, this thing has great audio quality. I went through my old projects that I've been working on since I sold my MBox and I can hear the low quality mixing I was doing using my computers built in sound card. This is work the money if you don't have an audio interface already and it sits perfectly on your desktop/studio space. Very clean look!

I don't........
Anyone who is super closed minded to Top40 or "what hip hop use to be" or what "house use to be" I don't even want them to hear a song I make. Anyone who is the the mindframe of "things use to be like this" can sit in the waiting room ;)
Not saying Bandoma at all..... have mad respect for the dude as a turntablist. But if you're gonna be in this thread critiquing, you better have an open ear because this isn't the place for mainstream idealism ;)
That being said.... lets continue to post. I have a few stuff that I'm gonna put out here quickly. Some stuff is up with labels so I can't put them out till the label does (contracts and stuff) and other stuff I'm still working on with people in Georgia (the country) and locally so its not done yet.
NO MAINSTREAM TOP 40 BOTTLE SERVICE CRITICS please!!! Thats what I say at least..... It's not worth it to appease them. There is no appeasing them to be honest.

I really like it when it goes into the guitar riff.
Yeah, it's alittle off the wall. Glad you liked it.

This is my first finalized instrumental, i usually start and then erase whatever i have. I need some mixing adjustments before i record some vocals on it (not me, but a local artist here in Houston)Enjoy and comments

my problem now is mastering and mixing, every time i load my track on serato the waveforms look so weak compare to other tracks, any mixing mastering software or hardware?anyone

it's good that you record your songs a little quieter (around -3db to -6db)
that little bit of headroom is important.
then bump them up later with compressors/hard limiters.
(true mastering is still only done by a small number of competant professionals)

Looking at what you guys think is a good, industry standard-like technics, affordable (under 700) for recording. Just some basic brands and/or models and I'll research the rest but at this point, not sure where to start... thanks ahead of time!

presonus firepod is a great recording interface with 8 xlr mic preamp inputs.
there are also some nice, portable, stand-alone multi-tracks out there.
it really depends on what you plan on recording (a whole band vs. just vocals and beats)

What you're looking for is a limiter. It will make your music louder. What software are you using?

Not to put you off but I don't think its as simple an answer as it is for DJing. Djing is pretty much laptop, turntables or cdjs. Then when you look at each of those you have one industry player who runs things.
With production you have ITB (in the box) which is basically everything inside the computer or OTB (outside the box) which is you guessed it everything outside of the box. You then have a multitude of different options depending on what you want to produce, how you work and the sound you are trying to achieve.
I hate saying this as it sometimes gets mis-interpereted but I suggest narrowing down a list of some producers you consistently like and read up on what they use then read up on those products and what is similar in your budget range.
And just to confuse things more I'm using ''producer'' as its more commonly known these days. Eg; one guy making a beat/song for a singer/rapper/band etc.

The funniest part of his question is he doesnt specify what the hell he even wants. He just wants some randon piece of industry standard gear. Does he want a Mic, does he want a preamp, does he want a DAW, an audio interface maybe?

I'm from the Dayton/Yellow Springs, OH area.
The "Shutdown" remix isn't going to be most people's cup of tea. It is really hard to get into. At the time, I was trying to keep it a 'rock' song while throwing in some DnB elements.
Thanks on the Madonna track. When I first did it, ALOT of people where bummed out about it not being 'dance' enough to play at their nights.

Not at all. Other then the small, but dedicated noise scene, electronic music isn't over here at all unless you're in an emo band and you have some guy hitting a Moog every third or fourth song.
I try to throw more down tempo stuff in when I DJ because it works with Dubstep and the live acapella remixes I do.

Here's one track i just started a couple of hours ago.
I know some of you are hyper critical so let it be known that midi on the synth is not quantized and some of the notes need to be extend
levels are wherever, and I didn't really mix anything down because I usually do that all at the end.
Aaaand the drums are a bit monotonous because they're there for reference at this stage right now. Once I'm done with my arrangements and melodies I'l go through and change up the drum patterns adding things in and taking things out every so often to keep it interesting.
www30.zippyshare.com
Right now I'm just messing around and experimenting until I find something I like.
Still got a ways to go.......

what makes techno techno? That's a good question! I don't know the answer to be honest, I just know it when I hear it. Techno is a rawer sound, more electronic. Although I would say my track above was more 'tech house' than techno, because I think classic techno is much faster.
Might have to Google it ;-)

mpc vs machine, what do you guys think...Maschine. Their new update is pretty dope and I find it pretty easy to work with.
---
I used to make techno and tech-house type stuff and kinda stopped back in 2007 with life getting pretty hectic. I've jumped around with a lot of different software and hardware, but my current arsenal includes NI Maschine, Logic Pro & Ableton 8. I've found that Ableton is actually the easiest of everything I've used.
Anyways, here's something I just made earlier tonight:
Smooth R&B type beat
soundcloud.com (The vocals over the hook are as a sample....not really meant to be there of course).
It's really my first attempt at trying to produce anything that is not considered house or techno. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I've been following J0be on Soundcloud for a while...lots of awesome tunes! I've know AMF for a while and never knew he made dope beats, hah. And I've played that Sniffles remix at my club a few times before. Heard a couple of dope beats from OB1, SweetL & jfx here as well.
Hopefully I'll get through the entire thread someday.

you need to do some major compression to each individual track and a lot of eq. It's very very low and the kick isn't "kicking"
If you did it in ableton, i can help you out

jobe and sniffles, appreciate the feedback
like you guys recommended, I need to go back and eq it better. I'll look up some tutorials.
regarding if it was in ableton, it was done on reason, and when done, rewired into logic with heavy compression and limiter on the master out

@jobe thanks man! i'm experimenting with all type of genre's right now
@djchope i'm guessing you mean the vox at the intro and/or break? to do that you just cut out a piece of a vocal you like and then load it into a sampler. i used ableton live's "sampler" for this effect. once it's in a sampler you can do all sorts of stuff with it (pitch it up/down, filter it, modify envelopes, etc)

It's too repetetive at the moment. What kind of track are you trying to make? To me it sounds like you're on your way to some kind of fidget/deep/dark house track. You need to lay it out properly so things are coming in after 4/8/16 beats and so it has a build up/beakdown.

Im not only working on my content but the actually sound (mix/mastering).

occasionally I will drop an accapella over one of my beats, and maybe scratch it a little and the crowds seem to dig it, as long as I don't go on too long with it...

I started messing around with ableton last year, took a break to enter dj battles and now i'm getting back at it. i've made a few tracks and I'll upload one of them to my sound cloud and post it here.

yea side chaining is great when used in moderation...
I also use it on my sub-bass and link it to the kick drum so that the kick comes through the sub a little bit better too... every track i make I learn something new and it's becoming a little easier to finish tracks quickly than before.
Would love to get to the point where I can start and finish a track in a couple days rather than a couple weeks...

It's more about getting a good workflow going and having a good set of presets to work with so you're not starting completely from scratch each time you sit down to work on a tune. I've finally created a good, workable template to start from and that's made a world of difference in getting tunes finished faster...
For me, once I can get into the "zone" working on a track it actually goes relatively quickly now (last track I managed to start and finish in 4 days) but it's being productive when you're not feeling creative that's the hard part for me...

that's a normal rack for me too - reverb with a sidechain on it on a send - just gentle enough to get the effect but not know where its coming from =)
Its nice to stick a sidechain on the hats as well to give them some extra movement =)
...or modulate the attack a bit so it shifts off just enough to get extra movement without being too noticeable
it's the little shifts that make all the difference and stops the monotony =)

good idea - gives the high hats a bit of pulse to it...
Another thing I've been doing is to stop quantizing my highhats that I drum out other than on the 1, unless it's really off-time.
Gives it more of a live swing to it... guess that works better if you're making funky beats tho...

I just drag the groove onto the midi keyboard. Didnt know you could extract your own. See why i needed these videos.
If anyone is interested i got a bunch from Sonic Academy that deal with specific Live instruments and efx. Then i got a bunch more from MacProVideo that cover the Core of Live8, the core series is like 12 hours long.

if you right-click on an audio clip, you'll see an option to extract grooves. Then it will appear in your Groove template.
So if you're basing a track off a break or sample you can apply the swing and groove from that sample to the rest of your track... it's pretty nifty...

Also check out Vesper's tutorials on youtube:

he's the infamous dude who was doing the button "scratching" in this thread: serato.com
He's actually an Ableton certified trainer who is constantly putting out tutorial videos online. I don't particularly like his music at all, but his knowledge and tutorials are top-notch - I've learned a lot from those videos (and going to talks cause he lives in my city).

I seriously wouldn't bother with Sonic academy, you do pick up little things from the videos, but watching them make a load of mistakes while searching around for different samples etc is really time wasting.
Groove3 and Macpro are really well put together though and worth sitting down with - I would recommend sitting with a note pad and taking notes as you watch
Tom Cosm is also worth a look at as well and teaches at a nice pace
With Grooves in Ableton I usually warp everything straight (select all and ctrl + U) and apply either the sp1200 grooves (16/58%) or the notator grooves (which is the Logic 16c etc groove that a lot of people use for house) afterwards, that way the full track sits together nicely
=)

I sidechain the source..... I put my reverb on a buss and throw sidechain compression on it from the thing I'm sending to that buss. There was a dub track I was working on that gave me the idea. I had this sound I made in operator (learn fm synthesis if you haven't....it's filthy) that sounded like a Godzilla growl haha. Well with the sidechain, the growl punched through really good with the reverb tailing behind as the sound ended. It had a really nice pump to it.
Another thing I do is put a crash on the kick (1,2,3,4) and put a very hard sidechain on it from the kick. I put a HPF on it so it's just the higher frquencies (white noise works too but I like the natural decay from a crash). I like the sound.... Usually I double the channels and but a slight timing delay and then hard pan for spatial widening.

I guess I just have to remember to test the tune in mono as well as just stereo...

You need to push your track delay way further!!!!!! If you're getting any phase, you're not going far enough! The doubling effect doesn't start till a lil past the phasing sound.

Width tricks...
Drop a simple delay on the track and set it to 1ms / 10ms (adjust to taste), 100% wet, no feedback - I have it set up this way as default to save having to set it up each time
Drop a Frequency Shifter on the track, click the 'Wide' button, adjust the Spread control (Max ~5 Hz) - I also set it this way as default
Double the track (if mono) and turn on the Track Delay (the 'D' to the right of the Master Volume) adjust 1 of the tracks by +/- ~10ms
To check for phasing throw a Utility on the 2 Bus and bring the Width down to 0% but remember to remove it once you've finished checking =)

Seriously why not just duplicate a track and bring the track delay up to 80-90ms? By then you've passed phasing and with a hard pan you have a thick sound.

Also, you must be using something other than Ableton, cos doing it your way would look like this...
1. right click, duplicate track
2. hard pan track 1 left
3. hard pan track 2 right
4. scroll to 80ms on track delay (if already active)
with simple delay it would look like this
1. double click simple delay
2. move on to next thing
I know I have mine set up to do that each time, but there's no way to set up the duplication process - you cant pre set a channel to duplicate and do the panning and then do the delay with a double-click using Live

The general formula is:
BPMnew = BPMold * (2^(1/12))^(number of semitones up) or
BPMnew = BPMold *(1.059463094359295260)^(number of semitones up)

...however that wasn't the first time you've warned me about my bass frequency levels, so I shouldn't advise you about yours! *as I dont really have "proper" studio monitors - which may be a direct result of my overly bass-heavy production, but thanks again for the constructive criticism...

That and when you mix down make sure you eq everything. Cut out or boost certain frequencies so each sound fits in the mix.

J0be - track sounds dope and the overall mix is very clean. Here are my suggestions.
1) I think the kick needs more ummph!
2)The acidy bass sounds a wee bit too loud.
That's it. Happy New Year mate!

I think the first time I posted in here about my interest in learning how to produce was a few years ago.
Fast forward to today - after two years in front of ableton and a year of piano lessons, I'm finally ready to share some of my tracks. I partnered up with one of my dj homies and we formed a group called Shoe Scene Symphony.
The first track I'm going to post here is a remix to Flo Rida's and Sia's "Wild Ones". We loved Sia's vocals so we decided to build the track around her and left out Flo Rida. I've played it at a few of my gigs and it seems to be working since the radio has been playing this song in my area.
Check it out:

The second track I'm going to post is an original track we call "The Innovator." We both like progressive house and electro so we attempted to combine the two in this song.

apologies for the clip nature, but I've been hearing too much about people just recording tunes off soundcloud so I had to go this route as it's being released on Juno soon...
