How much do you prepare for certain gigs?

Whenever you have special gigs, whether it's a throwback party, reunion, New Years, close friend's birthday, or opening night of a club...do you do anything in particular to prepare? Do you practice any sets that you may possibly use, or dig deep in your crates (literally or Serato) to find hard hitter songs for that crowd? I wonder if anyone here has similar techniques when dealing with this.

If you use codes, you'll never have to prepare for any gig anymore.

I sometimes spend a whole day putting together music for bigger gigs. I usually end very over-prepared, but when someone pays the big bucks I take my job very seriously.
I also code everything, so the next time I have a gig that is similar I can build from the work I did the time before.

Everybody's method is diff. I heard about the codes and see how they work..basically as invisible crates.
With that, how often do you update that or add songs to the rotation?

I'm in the process of adding codes...so I add them whenever I come across a song to play if I've got a second to spare. I also periodically search for artists that I think might be untagged and do a bunch at once. I also of course tag songs when I acquire them.
(But I reckon this is pretty intuitive and how everyone does it)

it took the MP4 holding the tags for me to get serious about codes. I hate nothing more than making a note during a set only to have it lost.
Now with 1.9.2 I can add codes while mixing and they show up in itunes the next time I open it. Now if we had smart crates I would be even more stoked.

Your library should keep on growing regardless. New music/videos come out each week, so codes get added to those as they're included in the library. As far as deleting music or videos, for me it's also once a week. I go through music/videos that are about a year old and haven't done shit. Then, I move them to another hard drive or delete them completely. Those that I delete completely shouldn't have been added in the first place... but sometimes... you ... just... never... .know.

Seriously I probably never spend more than an hour tops and that is a grueling/different gig from my norm meaning i need to add cue points or get some new clean stuff (i like to keep it dirty) or specialty tracks for various weddings. Just for example did an awards show here in town where I needed instrumental filler stuff when recipients hit the stage etc.. and just spent about 20 minutes or so doing loops on tracks i thought would be a hit and getting a few instrumentals. You have to factor in what you're getting paid and hopefully already have a nice library otherwise the gig isn't worth it.

If you don't like to code in the tag, code in another column. I code in my groupings column, and comments column depends on what the code is. In my groupings column I might put something like Halloween, Christmas, Wedding, or what ever the event may be and in the comment column I might put DJ Knockout Pick or something in that field. I personally fell that you should code how you want it to be and not how someone else want it to be.

the way i do it i think is kinda the same. the music i get is from hit discs like ERG and prmo only so when i get something like the new urban i dump it all into my hip hop folder then dump that right into my hip hop crate then i have a sub crate for hip hop and its called hip hop bangers and thats all the big hits that always get everyone going. and i do the same thing for radio, Reggae ,country ,Rock and so on. also any time i think of a song that i want to play i think of what crate it should be in and if its not in that crate i just click drag and drop. its that easy.
