This guy makes some awesome Ableton tutorials to help you quicker learn.
I spent about 3 months hammering Ableton and after this whole year of messing with it, i know it like the back of my hand. It's an amazing piece of software.

Yeah....if you're slow.
No, because there are a ton of things that aren't covered in it.

Oh yeah, if you have Ableton 8, Ableton has a ton of free packs available on their website right as part of their 10 yr anniversary

I have Ableton, but havent touched it in a couple years... (life be crazy)
can someone tell me how to take a long mix and separate it into shorter tracks? it seems like in Ableton would make this pretty easy

there are a couple of books- Ableton live Power! and one titled Ableton live 8 i think. ive been using ableton for less than a year, so i found both of these books helpful. google tom cosm, he has great tutorials. youtube and google have pretty much saved my life!
side note and not trying to diss you or anyone: a lot of people think that buying ableton will instantly making you a beat machine. just remember it takes time and knowledge of music. that was my fault. though i had been in some rock bands in high school, i realized that knowing a few punk chords on a guitar didnt really translate into much on a midi keyboard. i bought a few music theory books and they are pretty awesome.
practicing also works. usually i'll take a song that i like and try to recreate it (not exactly but just get the same kind of 'feel' as it). doing this forces you to try to use different techniques.

I've been using Acid to do my mixes for a while now and am looking towards going tinto Ableton with the possibility of taking a class to learn in.
For anyone who used it for mixtapes, is their a huge advantage?

Oh it gets deeper than that too..... Mixdowns, programming drums, MIXDOWNS, and the biggest, SOUND DESIGN.
A lot of people just use presets and thats why they sound like everyone else. Gotta know sound design.

This isn't directed towards anyone here.... more as a whole of what I hear about ableton a lot. Even from the hopeful musicians out here in NYC. People are treating ableton the same way people treat Serato. "If I get that, I'll be able to make the dopest musc"
Ableton does def make the songwriting process (or remixing process) move smoothly and easily. Easier than your average DAW, but you still gotta put the time in to learning it. I think it took me longer to learn Ableton than it did Acid or Pro Tools. Even after almost 2 years, I'm still finding these little tricks ableton has hidden in its platform.
On top of that, if you can't make a decent song on another DAW, you're not gonna make a decent song on Ableton.
Just as Serato won't make a bad dj good, but a good dj better, same goes for Ableton.

I went to see a certified Ableton Live instructor in Brooklyn NY. I think his name is Brian or Bruce Jackson.
My son and I had a few remix projects and he helped a lot.
Prior to that, I spent mega bucks on a course at Dubspot in Manhattan. I'm not going to knock Dubspot, but I learned more in a few hours with Mr. Jackson than I did in two months at Dubspot.
I would recommend finding someone that is proficient with Ableton Live and pay him or her to work on a project with you. This way you can learn to do exactly what you want to do and nothing else. Also you'll get one on one help. Ableton's website has a list of certified instructors.
My son is 14 years old. He and his friends use Ablteton Live, almost on a daily basis. It is amazing what they know.
Sometimes, I have to ask my son for help.

Down load their DEMO version and experiment on your free time.
(.....Kinda like how most folks down load ScratchLive/Itch and import all their tracks, build overviews, tag all their cue points, and arrange all their crates before their SL1/3/57/NS7)
I've been fiddling around, clicking all over the place, exploring the internal tutorials.
What's nice is how it gives descriptions and explainations of what ever you have your cursor pointed at.
I admit, over the years I've been intimidated by the whole learning curve aspect... but the key is "baby steps"

Best way to learn ableton? RTFM? lol... I kid.
I would imagine the best way would be to find someone in your area that knows the ins and outs of the program and have them teach you.

kids are great. My son's middle name is Disco. He told me the other day (he is 3.5 yo) about when he is big and a DJ, melted my heart. Then we poured through a PSSL catalog and talked about gear. He was particularly stoked on the APC40 and I had to agree that is a must for the studio this year. Ableton in the fold.
props to Kenny Q and his boy Kenedi. My boy can do whatever he wants but I hope to pass the love for music on to him and seeing a 2-generation team in action is inspirational. Thanks guys, keep it up.

Kids rock, as does the APC40, haha. My two year old loves to bash the buttons and say "Make Beats" - Too bad I didn't have an APC in the 70's, I might be a bit further along now with Ableton than I am now. I did have a Fischer Price turntable though...

Several people (my girlfriend, my father and others), told me that he was too young and it was a waste of time and money to take my son to Manhattan for DJ school every Sunday (this was a 3 hour train ride each way).
Later I was told that he was too young to work with me at age 12.
Having a passion for the same thing and being able to work together has made us very close. It is one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life.
Dub Cowboy,
Teach you son to love music and be a DJ/Producer. It's much better than being forced to learn violin or piano (in my opinion), and he can probably make more money.
