i'm gonna try it tonight when i go live on the internet again with camtwist. haven't really tried doing it that way yet. but you can also get a free program called PIP from apple that does the same thing and you can put the webcam feed anywhere and size it any size. this program is good when you want to webcam yourself when you're playing at a venue. camtwist is only good for internet feeds.

the stream its "ok" the lag is not that bad at all, i mean you have a delay here and there but overall i think it was "ok" =)

^^^^ thanks. yeah the quality is not HD by any means. looks kind of like normal youtube quality uploaded by normal everyday computer users. not vj quality like the guys video-talk here. but if you have a good internet connection you're golden.

i used to have the absolute fastest internet i could get. but to help the wallet out i minimized down to the medium grade bandwith. it was even better when i went ballz-to-the-wall on my bandwith.

at the spot i was at on monday, i don't know how great the internet connection was. i was jumping off some router from another business that was closed near-by. i used that connection twice before during last week and both times it timed out and cut me off around 11:30-12:30. wouldn't even allow me to reconnect for some reason. but monday it stayed all the way past closing :)

this set wasn't worth recording lol.... but lots of fun still!! Just gotta remember that people may be watching and don't want to hear me practicing my cuts (I NEED practice LOL). Will try to have more of a gameplan next time and it may be worth recording!

Camtwist works great - never figured out the PIP though? And made the mistake of using my wireless the first couple runs, lots of drop outs. Much better once I switched to a network cable.

Fr the audio - do you use the line in? Realized later that the 57 shows up as a sound device in Ustream. Figure that is the way to go?

i usually run a line from the aux out to the line in on the MBP. then i just choose the "line-in" for the audio input. for the pip --> first you have to make sure you chose desktop and which screen for the main video. then highlight (no double-click just single-click) webcam, then push the pip button at the bottom. after that, just resize and place the webcam output where you want it.

can't wait to see a recording from you. usually i just know what song i want to start with, then i just wing it from there and use a little improvisation. :-)

I just did a set mix and it's interesting..it sounds good during the mix, but listening to it after the fact I can pick up all the flaws. Just a tad off beat here, a bit too quick there...you never here those things in a club. lol

duh...hear not here.

Sometimes you don't hear them when you play anytime. You always hear the flaws after the fact (unless you totally screw up and know you really messed up - lol).

I listen to old demos of mine and go "holy crap, i sucked on that one!"

I did record it...was just a basic mix, nothing special. I'll look at encoding it...haven't had anyone slam my mixing here for awhile...about time for it to happen again I suppose.

I don't use a site, I just record live into my other laptop. Saves on tapes :)

I started listening to my own mixes in the car a couple year's ago... not an ego trip, but a great way to see what works and what doesn't. I think it's helped me slow down a lot and tighten everything up in general (whoa! no misquote). Throw the mix on a USB stick and ur off!

Thinki I'm gonna try to do a ustream mix at least once a week, will keep you posted!

Yeah I did, but deleted it because the audio sounded like shit!. When I played it back, it was giving feedback. I was using my Verizon wireless internet card and found out it wasn't giving me enough bandwidth to do what I wanted it to do. It couldn't keep up with my mix. It was lagging behide my mix. But if I just record and not broadcast, it sound good. So I'm going to do it again maybe tonight, just record and I'll post the link. I was looking for your expertise.

what settings are you guys using? I was getting maddd usb dropouts, even with quality output on low... guess it's the streaming that's killing me? never have ANY problems at the club with usb dropouts

camtwist and running the internet at the same time WILL jack up the CPU usage.

got a MBP 5.1, 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM

Didn't record it, no....... I couldn't get my external webcam to work so I used a video (logo & website) for my PIP - I bet this has something to do with it (It was a 720x480, yup that's probably it.... ) Will rerender the PIP video to an actual PIP resolution and bet that that will improve things

yeah. maybe. i'm using the 2.66GHz - 4GB RAM MBP. And my CPU goes from approx. 30-40% normal usage, to approx. 75-90% usage with camtwist and ustream.

BTW - you can put image overlay for logos & websites in camtwist and save some CPU stress (most likely). you can resize and move around the image overlay too

The image overlay is probably better than the video, will do that next time.... maybe this is where 4GB of RAM proves useful as well?

yeah. can't wait to get 8GB and a faster CPU! Lol! whenever that extra flow comes in (crossing fingers). :-P

What are you using to go out with? Talk about your set-up...I keep wanting to use a $4500 appliance to stream with and just not sure how the smaller set-ups are working.

Camtwist (free) and an ethernet cable. You can buy me drinks with your extra $4500 ;)

I use multiple sources that overlay graphics and camera feeds over the VSL output...to I need something that will take my external feed to the monitors and use that.

oh yeah.... sorry, overlooked that one... Since the the quality is limited (streaming video) I'm sure a simple video capture card device into a second laptop would do the trick? Nothing fancy, but it would work, and very cheap

haha. how about making sure your computer can handle it and try using the pip function in camtwist. not sure if that could work. but i've used pip for my webcam in my MBP for my shot and pip to show my actual desktop of SSL running live. both pip'd at the same time on top of the main VSL window.

I have 3 separate feeds happening that get summed into the final output. VSL, real-time graphic overlays, and the live camera feed.

Routing all of that back into a computer that I am using doesn't really work well...therefore the need for another device to just stream everything.

yup. that sounds like what you will have to do. but when/where will you be streaming? if you're just having fun you won't need all that extra stuff. just videos and crazy mixing mind. Lol. but if you're doing it live at a gig, well, then you will need that nasty expensive device.

BTW - what is this $4500 device you're talking about?

Right now I am looking at the Vbrick 4200 but wow that just seems like major overkill.

Actually for that price I'll just buy the Tricaster and be done with it.

what kind of webcam or cam are you using at your live gigs? i've been having trouble with place with low light levels.

got mbp 2.4GHz 2GB RAM... thinkin maybe more ram, but maybe just a new laptop lol... never have problems at the club with quality on high, usb buffer at one notch

i got the same one, i upgraded to 4 gb and didnt relly see much of a difference! how many fps do u get at one notch? i get 15 to 18 running vsl ans 5 to 7 running that plus camtwist lol

Just started broadcasting audio this past weekend. A little leary about moving on to streaming video. On a MBP 2.53, 4 gig. A couple of questions first. Are you always running wired internet or can you do it through wireless? I'm currently running at 2 on usb buffer, how is that going to be affected? Are you running an SL1 or SL3?
Now following Crush and PopRoXXX on ustream. I've only broadcast once...no recording yet.

i broadcast video on a 2.4 with 4 gb, and its not s good as poproxxx streaming but is ok, im sure yours is gona handle it better! i have broadcasted either way and its not really much of a difference, i use the ttm57, when is the nest time you'll be broadcasting?

I'm on Fridays and Saturdays. I'll give it a shot on Friday night and see how it looks. Watching two of my friends stream right now. Both are running video just fine on wireless.

i go wireless and wired. wired is preferred but you can do it either way :) i'm running the 2.66GHz 15" MBP with 4GB RAM. The 2.66 can handle it well (but i wish i had a little more muscle in the CPU)

i had a lot of lag last night with my ssl and me. i think i migth have had too many things plugged into he computer! it slowed me down big time!

and do u always get the same link to broadcast ?

yup. after you setup your show, it will always be the same link. you can actually setup multiple shows that each have their own link :)

well...i have several things plugged in...
my sl3 is plugged in for power, so i use one usb for that, i have the pioneer mixer, so i use the uno to convert from midi to usb, so that goes in another usb, and then i had the avermedia plugged into a usb to power that device(it converts the vga to rgb)and then i use firewire 800 for my external

well, if you're running the avermedia usb plug in an outlet converter, then you're only running 2 usb ports with 1 fw800 right?

what apps do you have open?

scratch, vsl, bome(midi controller) ustream producer, facebook...i couldnt even keep the ustream page up to chat... it froze it way to hard

yup! I couldn't even broadcast with Airport on... had to use a cat5 connection. I also have 2GB Ram, which I think may be the problem.... weird thing is I get USB dropouts when I'm streaming - never at the club though

that's because of all the programs running taking up CPU & RAM. I have 4GB of DDR3 RAM & 2.66GHz Intel Core2Duo. When streaming live my CPU is around 80-95% depending on what i'm doing.

so i would think anything less than that would be insufficient for live broadcasting (unless you tweak all settings of apps at their lowest CPU potential - which wouldn't be good anyway). anything more than that would be even better than what i could ever do.

yes CAT5 does run better than wifi :)

im wondering id wireless will slow down my computer tho..

If it's a good router and ur close to it, u should be okay..

i FIGURED, even guys with bomb systems run anywhere from 40-80%
depending on what they are doing...

thats why Im taking all the streaming -processing to POST VIDEO signal.
now I understand not everyone has a 2nd laptop, or a desktop in their booth.

but u can:
1: split your signal out of you output run 1 to you house video system and one
to the input of the 2nd computer (signal to usb adapters run from 40-250)

2.(like im doing) I run to a video mixer @ my spot. its got a few extra video outs.
so Im going S-video out of the mixer (if i wanted to get fancy I could go component)
with a simple svvid/rca audio to usb (which carries the audio & video signal)
the webcam is a usb run o the mill rotating cam...good shot, nothing redic.
(mainly becuase I hate looking at peoples chin the whole show...this cam can
rotate from the decks, to the dancfloor...)

I was ALL about going top notch quality, but the club isnt backing this 100% yet.
they dont see it doing anything for THEM, so ya know?
but when I watch most of the cam shows we are talking under 100 viewers,
and the quality ranges from decent, to decent and then some... not matter what
gear is being used....

so Id rather have all that hooo-ey going on after my cpu has processed the most
important ingredient for my club goers... if the stream goes down, or doesent look
amazing, thats ok... its the 600 people in the club im worried about.
