Better vid conversions with a Mac

Is there a better converter than Visual Hub. I tried various settings and my blacks are still being washed out. My source is vob - apple prores 4444 - mp4. The settings i am using with Visual hub is

Quality - Go Nuts
RTSP streaming
H.264 Encoding
Two Pass
Deinterlace
3000 bitrate
-g25
640x360

Any suggestions or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Those are pretty much my same vis hub settings.

Anything that uses Quicktime on the Mac side to encode is going to give you that gamma washout. I've been using Adobe's Media Encoder and it works much better. However if you really want to step your encode game up - Episode Encoder is the truth!

Hmm. I've been looking for an encoder soooo good, it would make me re-encode my entire library.

That's the thing though, if your gonna spend $500 or $1000 you BETTER make sure there's nothing out there that's better. And how the hell are you supposed to do that? Taking other peoples word for it?

Too bad all these companies wont give you a free trial of some sort so we could compare.

x264 is one of the best and it's free.
the problem most of the time is the source material. you can't make it look better than what you start with. po vobs aren't that great to begin with.
while i'm at it, i think SV needs to export their widescreen videos at 480p instead of 360p. especially since they should be sourcing content that is at least 480p if not 720p+. i have loads of true 720p and 1080p videos so i'm sure SV has tons more.

Episode Encoder in trial mode will let you encode 20 seconds with no watermarks. I took the plunge and I'm happy so far but like any software there's always room for improvement. For sure - free vs $500 is pretty hard to justify.

Like D says you can't make things look better than what you start with but with Episode it's possible to do some enhancing so that your final output looks as good as it can. Correctly using the filters on the output is like cleaning film off a dirty window.
