Serato Software Feature Suggestions

What features would you like to see in Serato software?

a better way to organize our track collection...

BassChamber 1:47 PM - 29 December, 2004
as i said in another thread, here are my ideas:

1- three subcrates level feature:

first at all, the impossibility to have subcrates is no good. but too much subcrates and sub-sub-subcrates are a chaos too. IMHO the best solution is to have a 3 crates level:

level a: general genres (house, hip-hop, D&B...)
level b: subgenres: (vocal house, deep house, groove house...)
level c: albums

now we could have all our music sorted by genres, sub-genres, and albums.

2- auto-updated or synchronized crates feature:

lets see and example: i would create a SSL crate named "House". inmediately, SSL would create a folder in my hardrive labeled "House", instead only writing a info file as it currently does.

i would drag some house tracks from explorer, or from import window, or from a hypothetical import tool (button, right click...) into this SSL "House" create. automatically, SSL would copy, or cut and copy, this tracks/album folder into the "House" hard drive folder and would update the software crate itself.

this way i would have my files sorted both in my SSL collection and my hard drive a time!

AND the opposite would work too; that is, if i copyed a track or album folder inside the "House" hard drive folder using windows explorer (or mac OSX explorer), SSL would update it "House" crate with the new tracks or album subcrate.

you see, the "House" SSL crate and the "House" hard drive would be synchronized.

this process would work with subcrates too.

2- auto tag editing feature:

every time i dragged a file inside "House" crate/folder, SSL would update this file ID tag writing House in the genre ID tag field.

and if i dragged this file inside an album crate, SSL would update this file ID tag writing both genre and album ID tag fields.

this way, we would change and organize the tracks ID tag just dragging files!! no more pain in our finger tips... (i write houdred of ID tags a week mates...)

what do you think? please mates, write your suggestions.

Nice suggestions. Don't know how they will work in the real world though. Pretty good, I assume...

Excellent. I would like to see this feature as well, auto link+update crates to/from certain folders.

looks for this in my sslhelper app.

I agree 100% to the above suggestion. I have always dreamed of such a feature...that shit would be HOT!

Although, I wouldn't want SSL to take forever to launch because it has to scan various drives for new/moved files etc. Maybe a separate helper app could be developed to handle song/crate organization...

An integrated file explorer like TFS would take care of all of this :{

i'm all for the sub crates.

but i dont think automatic changing of genre, and moving of files would be good.
i like to have an album together in one folder. if a few tracks are slightly different genres they would be seperated.

i think maybe even a seperate popup window for crates would be good. with much larger graphics. then you could have artwork larger fonts, and a kind of simple drag and drop system, with a one button popup for the window.

also being able to make your own icons for your own genres/sub genres would be nice. things that work at a glance in a dark club are all good.

i would also like to show my support for the idea of crate syncing with folders on pc/mac. I would love to have my Hip Hop folder update in SSL and auto import the tunes i have added to the specfied location(s). Great idea!!
niquid 10:00 AM - 9 February, 2007
this would be awesome! searato team, please read this.
i had this idea: in sl you would select your music folder(s) (like d:/serato music files...) in the setup would be a similar button like "rescan id3 tags", it could be "rescan folders" or something. this would detect all the changes you've made to the folder structure on your hdd, including file movement, deletion, renaming and adding of new files (dunno if this is possible in the real world but it's a neat idea). when the reascan is done all the new files would appear in a permanent/undeletable crate called "new additions" or something. and new files could have a coloration, like red and green for missing and played files. the "new files" color could be blue and they would stay blue until the first play or built overviews. what do you think?
perhaps every suggestion isn't possible but the "new files" coloroation would be really nice.
thanks!

This is exactly what I've been wanting for a long time. I organize all my music manually by putting them in folders by 'genre' or 'subgenre' on my laptop. I then have to go into each individual folder and import into a crate (with the same name) on SSL. Kind of a pain if I'm importing like 50 songs into about 20 different crates, right?

I love the "resacan folders" idea by niquid.
Chita79 7:07 PM - 19 February, 2007
I've been waiting for this feature for ages!!! its a must for all of us SSL users with 1000's+ songs... i really hope we get to see such a feature likes this really soon

co-sign! folder/crate sync would be great.

i was thinking the exact same thing over the weekend.... using itunes is getting tedious. i find myself having to organise my files before i load them into iTunes, then sorting them again in iTunes. i would rather cut itunes out (even though its very useful) when loading songs into SSL. im not even using the subcrates because my organisation is currently done through iTunes.

1) add some files to your folders
2) SSL auto-adds these tracks to a new folder
3) sort as needed

if SSL could also have smartplaylists as well, i could get rid of iTunes on my SSL laptop altogether
m0nster 12:23 PM - 21 February, 2007
ya, you would need to assign a button like rescan id3 tags, but for syncing to folder(s). I really really really WANT this feature, it's a want not a need, but i need to spend less time adding/removing songs to my lists that i'm updating to my folders. And no, itunes is not a option.

crossing my fingers and toes for this to happen.

This is the most wanted feature right now. It would save hours every week for many of us. Rescan folder! YEA! And serato auto import new tracks from the selected library!! This would be heaven!

Have anyone ever tryed to import a folder to the crate places (the left side of the screen) - the folder shows up as a crate.

I just don't know if it will auto-scan every time you open the serato.

I'l try this when i get home today!

ScratchTools can do this.

thanks nik i'm gonna try that out.
Metamorphous 1:55 PM - 1 December, 2007
Yes..yes...yes....please

Sorting both SSL crates and HD folders togeher would be a dream. The ability jus to delete files on the HD from SSL would also help....so many files on my HD sometimes once I know i will never play a track out again i wanna delete it (whole HD is backed up on an external, but this would free up laptop HD space)....

Here's hoping....
allenbina 10:05 PM - 1 December, 2007
i would pay cash for this idea. i cannot believe that ssl does not have this in their program yet. its honestly somewhat pathetic and backwards that each track needs to be done by hand, or to use a second program that does not have a gui and is not made by the same people. BUMP
DJmoney 3:38 AM - 20 November, 2008
would love to see this i already organize my folder much like i keep my crates always though it would be something ez to implement

So what is a good way to go about it now, accept for oldskool Reimport & Reanalyze my files?
I'd ike to acces my main archive af about 50Gigz of sorted shit, wich I update daily. Reanalyzing costs me hours!!

I concur whith this suggestion. If ScratchLive or a secondary but link application had those capapbilities, all my unsorted music would be depleted. My library would grow almost instantaneously and I would be a very happy man.
DJ TecThreat 9:52 PM - 26 June, 2010
I would really like this feature. Other software is capable of this, and it would make my life so much easier. I add approx 200+ songs a month in various folders and I spin everything from Elvis to Dub step so I've quickly outgrown the Crates solution.

PLEASE ALLOW CRATES TO SYNC TO FOLDERS IN SSL.
Ian Saunders 5:19 PM - 21 August, 2010
I support this 100%.....I currently use scratch tools but the way my folder structure is it duplicates the files and if I move files to different folders on my hard drive after they've been imported into SL they just appear as missing. Why can't we have an option to sync SL with the folders on the hard drive? The first time you open SL it would do the complete sync and then when you add new files to a folder you have the option to run a sync update on that specific folder within SL.

I'm surprised to see this feature request was created in Dec 2004 and we're now on version 2.1 and we don't have this option???
MixMasterMagic 10:15 PM - 21 August, 2010
Ya I would like if I update a folder with new tracks that it would automatically update the crate associated with that folder

TOTAlLY AGREE WITH THIS!! ALLOW CRATES TO SYNC TO FOLDERS IN SSL

I am surprised Scratchtools has this feature and not Serato SSL. Smart crates is OK, you how about smart folders?? Smart folder will update the database whenever it senses a new file has been added to a folder, assuming the person is following the same crate structure as the folder he has in SSL. ( I should patent this idea :) )
jordanWHOmusic 10:49 AM - 5 April, 2011
AGREED AGREED AGREED!

Serato what the hell are you doing? Pull your finger out and listen.

The fact this feature isn't already available is a HUUUGE oversight.

Serato is simply pathetic at organising and keeping your music in sync unless you use iTunes. So if you think about it... Serato, arguably the worlds most popular DJ software relies on software made by Apple to stay organised? ...Very sad.

And it's not even that hard of a thing to code..

All we want is for crates to auto update when tracks are added either in Serato or on the your HD.
gfunk 9:08 AM - 30 April, 2011
agreed. massive time managing music to sync that should be automated by now.
