Im sure this was probably posted already but there are 5000+ post and I just signed up today. Here is the situation:
I have 2 Tech 1200's. One where the right(red) RCA signal is bad so I use a Y-splitter to share the left(white) RCA signal into my mixer, which works fine as long as I have the "red" wire plugged into an unused line on the mixer (this has something to do with the ground because there is a humm when I don't have the red wire plugged in, it sounds like when you have a loose ground). Anyway when I use the above mentioned setup with serato the interface will not calibrate and the cue line plays backwards or will play "jagged and slow". Is there anything in the software I must setup. I know I could simply fix the RCA's but the situation is what do I do when I have to work at a club/bar and their turntables are having the same issue.....thanks in advance

Do you use Ortofon concord cartridges?

There is no getting around bad RCA cables, so you will need to have them replaced/repaired. Simply put, Scratch LIVE must read the left and right signal of the control record to work properly.

That wont work with SSL as Shaun said. SSL relies on a good signal from both the left and the right signal, if one side falls out, you're out of business. Unfortunately. There is a thread here scratchlive.net where AJ explained why l/r is needed.

OK I HAVE A SOLUTION, WORKED ON IT OVER THE WEEKEND AND HERE IT IS.

SITUATION:
YOU GOTO A CLUB WITH YOUR LAPPIE AND JUMP ONTO THEIR SETUP ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT THE TABLES HAVE BAD RCA's. WELL I BY-PASSED THE RCA's TOTALLY BY TAKING THE SIGNAL RIGHT OFF THE BACK OF THE CARTRIDGE AND TIE WRAPPING THE CABLE ONTO THE TONEARM. THIS IS A TEMPORARY SOLUTION FOR MESSED UP TABLES AND IT WORKS, I TESTED IT OVER THE WEENEND AND WOULD HAVE POSTED PICS ALREADY EXCEPT MY ISP HAS BEEN DOWN FOR 2 WEEKS. ANYWAY TAKE A SET OF RCA's, SPLICE THEM AND CONNECT TO THE 4 WIRES COMING OFF THE BACK OF THE CARTRIDGE. YOU WILL HAVE TO PLAY AROUND WITH THE GROUNDS TO FIGURE OUT IF THEY ARE CROSSED. ALSO NOTE THAT THE INNER INSULATED WIRE FOR THE RCS CABLE IS YOUR POSITIVE WIRE (JUST COLOR COORDINATE BTWN. LEFT AND RIGHT). BASICALLY THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE RCA CABLES I SPLICED WERE TOO THICK A GAUGE AND KINDA PUT SOME RESISTANCE TO THE TONEARM SO I WILL TRY TO FIND SKINNIER WIRES. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY POSSIBLE WAYS OF BOXING THIS THING OR A BETTER WAY TO ROUTE THE WIRES. THE WAY I SEE IT YOU COULD SETUP A PAIR OF THESE FOR THAT JUST IN CASE MOMENT.....HIT ME UP!!!

Did you have to post that in CAPITALS, man?
LoLyfe 3:56 PM - 5 January, 2005
sorry just maad busy at the office and was not thinking.....
dj synystr 4:01 PM - 5 January, 2005
that is a good idea but no mater how thin the wires there will always be resistance on the ton arm with extra weight and wires hanging from them.
LoLyfe 4:08 PM - 5 January, 2005
yeah and probably slight signal loss with like a 24 gauge wire. I've been looking at the setup all weekend and cant seem to find a better way to route the cables......:(
bartaug 4:19 PM - 5 January, 2005
Surprised you got away with the grounding being bad....
LoLyfe 4:23 PM - 5 January, 2005
i was thinking the same thing that somehow the ground would be tied in with the chasis of the table but everything worked pretty well
bartaug 4:27 PM - 5 January, 2005
Did you look at the circles in the setup page? Maybe they looked like UFO's :-)
LoLyfe 4:33 PM - 5 January, 2005
actually they are pretty good, nice and round. I compared my mockup with a ortofon with the electro stylus on it. My mockup had pretty good resemblance to that of the ortofon on the setup screen
LoLyfe 4:40 PM - 5 January, 2005
i was looking at this wire. It is used for aerospace applications and is 30 gauge.

Pretty expensive though.
LoLyfe 5:19 PM - 5 January, 2005
yeah i know but im thinking conductivity and the torture test they did on it might make the 50 dollar investment worth it.
feniks 5:36 PM - 5 January, 2005
this might be a good temporary solution if you are the only DJ playing that night. however, there is no way that you are going to be able to do this and get the setup calibrated while in the middle of a set. i can't tell you how many times i've had to jump on the decks in the middle of the night--after the opening DJ--and have had to connect my SSL box and cables, switch out the needlez and check the calibration all during the prvious DJs last track...and in such a way that the music doesn't stop. i think it would be hard to do this if you also had to jimmy around with the headshell contacts and run new wiring. but as you said....this may be the only option available to get SSL running smoothly.
Revolutionary 5:37 PM - 5 January, 2005
100 feet...You really need a cable that can withstand temperatures of 2600°F? Must be really hot where you live, man ;)
LoLyfe 6:32 PM - 5 January, 2005
[feniks] - yeah i hear that, the only seemless way to do this is to build a coffin with tables of your own and go into the house line in but that would defeat the purpose of carrying less.

[Revolutionary] - naw i really dont all that it is capable of doing, it was the first link i clicked on when i did a search for 30 gauge wiring and my only concern was the signal conductivity in such a thin wire....
SpinThis! 6:34 PM - 5 January, 2005
at least if there's a fire, the cable will still be left. ;)
Revolutionary 6:45 PM - 5 January, 2005
That's right. You will be glad you spent those 50 bucks on them then. "Hey, all my other equipment is gone, but I still have my 50 buck cables" ;)
LoLyfe 7:37 PM - 5 January, 2005
at least I will still have them to jump start my car, do my science project with a bulb and a switch, and with a 100 feet i could double dutch with 15 people
Revolutionary 7:45 PM - 5 January, 2005
Nice. How is that Alienware working out for you?
BadCompany 7:58 PM - 5 January, 2005
man if you gonna go though all that might as well just take the tech apart and rewire it... its not difficult considering what you have already done...
LoLyfe 8:50 PM - 5 January, 2005
[Revolutionary] - I love the alienware lappie, i do alot of flyers and this machine has crazy performance. I dont see a difference with serato than when I had it on my PC but I love the laptop. I think the only thing is I wish the keys bere backlit, would come in handy at the clubs

[BadCompany] - only reason why is this....I do share time slots at varoius clubs and bars in NYC. Almost all the time I will have to bring a y-splitter bcuz the rca's are always jacked up, no the splitter will not work with serato and for me to use my serato i will have to come up a temp solution for these situations. I think if I could fine tune this mockup it'll work out fine. I erks my when i walk into a club and they have 50,000 jiggawatts of sounds and the turntable are jacked up.
Revolutionary 8:59 PM - 5 January, 2005
Didn't we recently discuss this somewhere? Maybe you should have a look at that thread LoLyfe if I only could find it :)
LoLyfe 9:04 PM - 5 January, 2005
yeah we did, in the lappie section but hey, between this forum and all the legal documents i have to read at work my brain is scrambled. You what else i was thinking. If i could find a tiny wireless transmitter and mount it to the headshell and the other end will continue onto the RCA's then there will be no issues with the tonearm or the wires, the only problem is there is bound to be some sort of interference with all the amps and mixers and speakers surrounding you
Revolutionary 9:10 PM - 5 January, 2005
Interesting. Really interesting, man.
LoLyfe 9:17 PM - 5 January, 2005
i know, im getting stretch marks on my forehead from all this thinking, but imagine that sh*t and headshell with a wireless connection to an rca box...hmmm sweeeeet
Revolutionary 9:18 PM - 5 January, 2005
Mmmmm...Wireless ;)
LoLyfe 9:28 PM - 5 January, 2005
maybe rane will pick up on this and offer me a prototype as payment. Ill be sure to get a second pair to hit you also....hehe
Revolutionary 9:34 PM - 5 January, 2005
Thanks, man. I would appreciate that :)
LoLyfe 9:39 PM - 5 January, 2005
lets see what happens, if not ill make it myself and call it the "LYFE Flux Capacitor Needles"
dj synystr 3:34 PM - 6 January, 2005
LoLyfe they use wireless transmitters and recievers for quitars and other instruments on stages. wireless mics the whole nine yards. as long as it is a stong signle that is changable then it shouldnt have any feedback.
