everybody can get the software free. everybody uses the same software. it all depends on what is attached at the end...mp4, sl1, ttm57....which determines what will be displayed on your screen. you're basically buying the dongle which allows full functionality and playback. without either of these dongles, you're pretty much useless. nice way to keep software from being cracked, in my opinion.

correct! im just saying i have the usb box, and if i buy the 57sl I feel like i will be buying the usb box all over since its built into the mixer. is there a version of the mixer without this build in? for cheaper

You can easily sell it and get back most of your money back. Although remember, if you get the mixer, then you have to take it with you to all your gigs if you want to use SSL. It may not always be possible to swap mixers at a gig. So you'd be SOL. So you might want to consider keeping the SL1 as a backup.

For the future it will be possible to also use the TTM57 as a SL1 box only in case you can connect your complete mixer to the clubs system.

in my opinion you need both. i've had plenty of cases where i couldn't use my 57 so i had to plug in my sl-1. i am not even thinking about selling my sl-1.

ya i can see your point ,but man thats alot of $$$ to have both. If in the future you can just use the 57 as a slbox then that would be ok.it Would be nice if the box that was built into the 57 was removabl!!! what about the sound quality i have a djm 600 right now. would i be able to tell any difference? let me know and thanks for the replys

The 57 doesn't really have a built in SL 1, so it could never be made removable. It's just all one mixer that performs all the functions.
On the subject of sound quality, I can hear a huge difference between the sound quality of the DJM600 and the TTM 57SL. That is both the effects general sound (including the quality of the phono stage). The 57 sounds amazing the 600 sounds like shit.

Hey man, I'm not trying to be mean or anything, just being candid, but honestly, you're asking some really silly (a nicer way of saying "dumb") questions.

I know this is an old thread but hopefully everyone is subscribed to it and will get that there is an update....figure i try this before starting a new one.
Im thinking the same...Im in the exact Situation Motion is in....I have the SL1 and a DJM600 and want to get the 57SL....I have someone that will buy my box for 475 (exactly what i paid for it). Is it realtivily easy to use the 57 as a box....is there a sound quality issue??

The sound quality is no problem and it is easy to connect. So don't worry about it, buy it !!! :-)

I recently bought the 57SL from a private seller off of ebay. It was bought from guitar center by the original owner and has a warranty on it. After buying it, the seller registered it under my name. However, he forgot to include the software CD that came with the original package. What do I need to do to get the software I need? Do I have to use the software that originally came with the mixer, or can I use the downloadable version from the internet, or can I somehow order a new software CD directly from Rane? What are my options?

Use that quick search feature that is located just below the index.
Simply go to the DOWNLOAD section!
In case you don't see it, here goes:
