Hey ya'll, I just installed iTunes on my computer cuz my lil brother got me one of those 4th gen. iPods for X-mas. I was just wondering, is there a way to sync a playlist with a folder on my HD? Or do I need to manually update my playlists whenever I add new songs to my music folders?

I don't use iTunes, but I think I read somewhere that you don't have to do that.

Rev - you and I must be the only ones who don't use iTunes.

So can anyone help me out with this question? Can you sync iTunes playlists with folders on your hard drive?

Check the official site, man. Or PM someone who uses iTunes...

I thought the purpose of this forum was to create a place where DJ's can ask other DJ's for their advice so that we don't have to spend a ton of energy trying to figure something out when someone else has a simple answer? I've received several replies to my post...but none of them are relevant to the original question that was asked.
If anyone knows how to sync folders with playlists in iTunes, that'd be great. If I don't get a reponse, then I'm going to assume that that's not a function that iTunes has yet.

Hell yeah, I gave you a good advice. Check the official website. Noone that uses iTunes have obviously not read this thread yet, so we're trying to do the best we can, man.

maybe there is a way... creating smart playlists with "live update" turned on.
smart playlists show those tracks that meet a certain criteria. for example, if you create a smart playlist and you set it to show every track that meets the criteria: genre - hip hop, every track you add to your itunes collection labeled hip hop will be showed in this playlist.
i have not tested this yet, but it is really interesting...

you can get really detailed with smart playlists if you want too... using BC's example, you could make a playlist with all the hip-hop mp3s you added within a week and within 90 and 110 bpm, for example.

But that uses info from the id3 tags of the mp3's. I want to organize playlists by the folders that the mp3's are containted in. The id3 tags don't have any info about where the file is being stored.
If anybody here used to use FS1.0 and used FlatFeetPete's record box editor application, you'd know what I'm talking about. I just got so used to using his app to organize my music, it's hard to do it any other way. Right now I just delete my crates and reload each folder that I want as a playlist each time I add music to my HD. Maybe this feature will get added in the future =D

yes, this feature is still needed. i have not found a mp3 organizer program that fills my needings yet...
i waste A LOT of time editing tags, you know.
BTW, i think the way that SSL organize our tracks is too simple (just a windows cramped with a bunch of crates). i have a lot of genres, and thousand of albums!
i would like to see a way that allowed me to auto-tag editing just dragging tracks to a crate/playlist; and auto-updated crates too.
lets me explain this ideas:
1- auto updated crates feature:
first at all, the impossibility to have subcrates is no good. but too much subcrates and sub-sub-subcrates are a chaos too. IMHO the best solution is to have a 3 crates level:
level a: general genres (house, hip-hop, D&B...)
level b: subgenres: (vocal house, deep house, groove house...)
level c: albums
now i could have all my music sorted by genres, sub-genres, and albums.
lets see and example: i would create a SSL crate named "House". inmediately, SSL would create a folder in my hardrive labeled "House", instead only writing a info file as it currently does.
i would drag some house tracks from explorer, or from import window, or from a hypothetical import tool (button, right click...) into this SSL "House" create. automatically, SSL would copy, or cut and copy, this tracks/album folder into the "House" hard drive folder and would update the software crate itself.
this way i would have my files sorted both in my SSL collection and my hard drive.
AND the opposite would work too; that is, if i copyed a track or album folder inside the "House" hard drive folder, SSL would update it "House" crate with the new tracks or album subcrate.
this process would work with subcrates too.
2- auto tag editing feature:
every time i dragged a file inside "House" crate/folder, SSL would update this file ID tag writing House in the genre ID tag field.
and if i dragged this file inside an album crate, SSL would update this file ID tag writing both genre and album ID tag fields.
this way, we would change and organize the tracks ID tag just dragging files!! no more pain in our finger tips... (i write houdred of ID tags a week mates...)
...mmm i think im gonna post this in the feature suggestions forum...
