[self-help-thread] How to approach venues who have never had video before

Joshua Carl 8:02 PM - 19 October, 2009
I just figured I cannot be one of the only people in an area where people
are completely mis-guided on what it is we do.

here we fell victim to a guy who installed a system on Id say 75+% of the systems in
the city (to replace Muzak) and included video, and a few hundered gigs HORRIBLE web-
rip videos... I mean BAD. real bad.

so, aside from the obvious.
(promo dvds, cds, promo packets....)

what are some good ideas?

for now, because my plate is full, I tell them to stop by my night.
which doesnt really work...aside from the places that are within a few hundred
yards... and obviously I cant go there anyways..

Well first off, what the guy who is selling the bars/clubs these systems is breaking copyright laws by selling bootleg'd videos. And club owners and bar managers should've known by the piss poor quality that something was up and reported him to the bbb.

promo only has a whole part of their company that cater's to bars/clubs who want a constant playlist of videos...as to say like the power sets...po will specifically put a bunch of those together (seen that in a club in miami for happy hour)...and even as recent as friday i was in dayton ohio spinnin this ultra lounge and they had basically the whole hot video issue premixed...but not mixed beat to beat, just video trans from one song to another...directly put together from promo only.

Dont quote me, but I do not think you are allowed to provide any club/bar with videos from promo only, rock america or any other legit service for profit. I dont even think you are allowed to provide them for no profit...yes you could do it illegally but in the end thats only going to cause problems.

I think your best bet, if you are looking for more events at other places would be to first approach a bar manager or owner and let him/her know you are interested in doing business with them, and let them know some of the basics...then ask them if they would mind if you got back to them within a certain time period...and provide them a business plan (which includes a promo dvd/cd, what you plan on offering for your service to them, explain to them in general what it is you do that sets you apart from other clients/djs...and the basic costs in rewiring or wiring up their projectors, tvs etc to a video feed.

Thats a start.

+1 Millz good advice once again

Yeah... so many people have already called this guy out... but nothing ever comes
of it.
he basically installs a desktop computer, loads dj power/martin light-jockey on it.
hooks up an external drive, and from home sends music and videos to it.
some places, he comes in and manually updates the drives.

u know owners.
they are convinced it wont come down on them, they think they'll go after the installer.
so, for what they pay...and i assure you, its in the 5000+ area... I guess they like
their 96kb music, and videos with YOUTUBE right on them.

wow, remind me to avoid which city?
Joshua Carl 11:04 PM - 19 October, 2009
ask anyone from Boston who has 5+ years of club experience under their belt
about DJ Power and I guarantee you will get an ear-full ;)

Ironically this guys gets 99.99% of his sales becuase he has been the audio guy
(I dare not call it DJ) for the Boston/TD Banknorth Garden for 15 years...
ya know... plays sandstorm & zombie nation during timeouts.... that guy

ah so its politics as usual in another big city as well eh?
Joshua Carl 11:09 PM - 19 October, 2009
Isnt it always the way...
Ive been so on the fence about retreating to some of these upscale restaurant/
lounges just outside the city, but the pay is considerably less, and the people
are generally 10X worse...
you get alot of "this is our bar" people...
Millz 11:14 PM - 19 October, 2009
i actually get paid more on suburbs bars/clubs...and i dont have to put up with douchebag people...the "this is our bar" people tend to be mean @ first but when u get to know them they are alright...at least in PGH, now in Boston i dont know...all you pats fans can kiss my ass ;) lol

Ha!
I ran tape for the Steelers when they got spanked at Gillette a few years ago.
my roommate used to work in their front office.

hows bout that 59 to 0 win over Tenn?
and 50 were scored in the first 1/2.

it was like watching someone play madden for the first time.
