Hi, I just came back home with my new G4 PowerBook, 756Ram, 1,33Ghz and my new Serato with CV2 and as from what I see even with SSL1.2 Instalation CD.
I pluged everything. Instaled, connected. Works nice.
In Serato i have got my USB settings on 2ms latency. 1ms doesnt work on Mac.
Two thing I have to ask are:
It sounds ok but still it doesnt sound like real vinyl. Where can I change buffer setings? Is there other place on my Mac where I can change latency/buffer of usb?
Second, when I want to play normal vinyl I can just put in on, change phono/line and it plays. But my Serato goes totaly crazy and on screen I see how it plays backward.
In manual they say that when song plays backward, then cables are wrong connected. But my songs from serato play ok. But when I put normal 12" then Serato shows like it would play back or something.

The USB setting is the 'buffer' that you are inquiring about... just fiddle with the settings until you get the desired results.

It's totally normal for the signal to go crazy, once you put on a normal vinyl, since it doesn't have the control signal that is on a SSL record. If you don't like this, you can unload tracks by pressing shift+alt+(left arrow) or (right arrow). But don't change from line to vinyl, since the normal vinyl signal comes out the "Thru"s on the SSL Box. All you have to do is switch from line to phono on you mixer, if you connected it according to specs.

I guess it should be as low as it can be. So my "2" setting is best that I can have?

Yes, should work, too... Since I'm on a powerbook with 1.25 GHz and it runs on a buffer of 2 with nooo problems whatsoever.

Chubsta - I know that I can change phono/line on my mixer. I didn pulled cables. :) Thanks for help with that backward playing track. I will just unload then. I was just worried if my Serato wouldnt just error after about 20minutes of this crazy reading normal vinyl.

For a MAC, yes, '2' is the lowest setting (I am on '1'... but I have a PC)... still, '2' is a very low latency.

Thanks.
I'm new to SSL and its interface.
I see I can make crates.
But how to fill them with tracks?
I mean should I put there single tracks or iTunes list or what? :)
I'm also new to iTunes so I still don't feel good in that enviornment. :)

Either you got iTunes and playlist, that works. Or you can pull/drag tracks from your iTunes playlist (SSL imports them) and then past them into whatever you crate you like. You cant edit iTunes playlists inside SSL.

Good question. It shouldnt, but I also try to make sure that the decks are unloaded, once you play real vinyl.

I don't know if this is correct, but with a USB buffer setting at 2, you would get a 9 ms latency?
Personally, I have it set at 1 with no problems...

Yes, overall latency you can get is 8ms on a pc, and 7ms on a mac, so as you can set the usb buffer size to 1 on a pc, and 2 on a mac, that makes a system latency of 7ms on a pc, and 6ms on a mac. Correct?

I heard some people saying they can notice that. Are you one of them, nik?

If 6ms latency is best what I can get then I'm not 100% happy.. Playing parties and concerts will be pleasure but it dosnt feel fenomenal for scratching. :)
I also found that when dast backspinning SSL looses track. Maby my needles jumped little but I don't know. Thought it will be stable, just like real 12" :)

I definitly can not tell you the absolute latency number, but I can "feel" the latency difference between setting the buffer at 5 compared to 1.

haha, me probably too but I even didnt checked "5" :) Gone straight to "2".

Uhm, you maybe misunderstood me, there is almost no latency I can feel with the lowest setting in SSL compared to vinyl. I am just saying there is a difference I can feel between buffer size of 1 compared to buffer size of 5 (total latency 8ms vs 12ms). But I admit, there is still a difference compared to real vinyl, but this has to do with various things, digital tracks sound different, plus if you have a normal samplerate of 44.1kHz, slow recordmovements will sound different than with real vinyl, if you use 1/10th of the original speed your audio file will be at 4.1kHz if you understand what I mean. Also needle dropping is of course different, SSL comes veeeery close to vinyl, but I doubt there will be ever any system which will completely (!) copy the original feeling of analog system. (Nah, I am not bitching, SSL is good enough, needle dropping is great, tracking is great. Its not SSLs flaw that 44.1kHz files whill sound a bit different at slow speeds.) And btw, I have no problem with SSL loosing the track while backspinning.

check your ttables set up, you shouldnt loose the track when backspinning...
anyways, i dont really know how, but needle drop latency has been lowered a lot in my system after formating the hard drive... (talking about SSL 1219). now i can basckspin crazy like real vinyl in absolute mode.

Formating SSL box? :)
Strange thing.. Yesterday I was playing normally with my Serato. Decks were calibrated very well. I was making some changes in cables be cause I checked recording on my second computer. I also unpluget SSL box be cause I wanned to take my laptop to another room.
Today I pluged SSL box, cables and calibration setup shows me my decks as straight line, not green wheel as it should be.
Does anyone know where is the problem?!
Help please, I woke up and cant play on my SSL!! :))

If you get a straight line, that means the software is only getting a signal from one side. Check your connections (cables, needle carrier etc.) and you should be back up and running.

ANother thing with thata calibrating problems is when i pust "Estimate" button it goes straight to right. Looks like it would get lot of noise but there is nothing more playing in my room. It cant recieve other vibrations.

Chubbsta - Thanks man. It was the needles. Strange thing is I didnt unplug my Ortofon Concorde's since yesterday. And no, after night they were bad connected (as Calibration window showed). But now it work fine. Thanks.

Szalony Wariat, typical ortofon concorde problem. They often loose connection on one side.
