How to tether your iphone

drmemory 3:11 PM 6 September 2009
This is a great hack. I used to do this with my razr back in the day and you just cant beat internet access anywhere, anytime.
"you got such and such obscure crap song?"
"gimme ten minutes..."
on your iphone....
Go to help.benm.at
download the app for your carrier
go to settings...general...network...tethering and turn it on

on your mac
plug in your phone and sync
it should see the new ethernet connection...dont worry if it says its disconnected
let it sync again
under tcp/ip make sure its dhcp enabled
hit apply

:) next ill show you guys how to build your own dual core mac for 280$... If I dont get sued first

WARNING this hack may cause data overage costs, data loss, bodily harm, flatulence, loose stools, hangnails, obesity, stupidity, excessive attraction to fat chicks and hair in funny places NO WHINING

this works for me on my 3g running 2.2 firmware. Im using that socks5 proxy program on my iphone and that 'iphone modem' program on my mac.

I heard something about if you use over like 5Gb of bandwidth a month over the 3g network, that AT&T will shoot you a fat bill...even though they advertise your internet plan as 'unlimited'.

Careful everyone.....at least in the US. I heard phone companies know how to track if you tether and will charge u the tethering plan without notice. I dont have an iphone but I just figured out how to tether using my saumsung eternity (for AT&T). A friend of mine that works for them explained to me how they can tell if u are using phone's internet and and a computer.

Now it might be different since iphone goes on the actual internet...but just passing the massage along.

I have a fed friends who use it and don't get charge
dj_KaSE 2:39 AM 16 September 2009
AT&T doesn't officially have tethering plans yet, so I wonder how they would go about charging you if you tether on an iPhone
Ab-Loon 8:01 AM 16 September 2009
I heard they do have tethering charges but never really looked for details myself. Maybe i should. haha!
MSF 5:49 PM 16 September 2009
I just heard they charge you like $500-$800 if you are caught consistently using major bandwidth( > 5Gb/mos) over a tethered connection .
Dj-M.Bezzle 9:28 PM 16 September 2009
Ya they don't charge you for the plan they charge your for usage minutes

att is planning on introducing tethering packages for the iphone in the near future, but as of now they have no such plans/rates. from what i have heard they are generally aware that this may be going on now, but i dont think theyre going to do anything until the tethering plans are put into effect.
Ab-Loon 1:12 AM 18 September 2009
Yeah I dont see anything on the AT&T site. But now im hella paranoid since I lost my job recently. And I dont wanna call cause even tho they would say no...I have a feeling they would tack on some kind of notice or fee since im basically saying "yeah im gonna do this illegal thing till u start charging for it.

Warning guys:

Lastnight I realized that my iphone wasn't getting any voicemail after a few complaints of "did you get my message?"

I was on with tech support for about an hour until I got transferred to the 'expert'.

he had me delete the profile created from help.benm.at and then suddenly I got 2 months worth of messages.
dj_KaSE 6:50 PM 17 November 2009
Yep. One reason why my iPhone didn't last very long as a tether source.
p3tuh 6:14 PM 25 November 2009
tethering after jailbreaking with blackra1n and everything is working fine, including voicemail.

Good to see some success! caution though the 3.1 update kills your tethering ...
it lets you send naked pictures to your girl/boy/other friend though!
