I have been running Serato Scratchlive since August 05' and haven't came across a whole lot of problems. A few usb dropouts here and there and maybe 2 crashes since I bought it. I upgraded to 1.5 (1536) the day it came out. I haven't had any known issues until yesterday. I built all my overviews on newly added tracks monday night and then yesterday when I hooked up at the studio I noticed USB dropouts were worse than ever. I am getting them every few seconds to probably every 10 or 20. Clipping, popping, USB red light and orange light is on more than it isnt on. Practically any time I put a new track on the table thats not playing it causes dropouts horribly.
I have read every single thread on this forum. I normally run my USB buffer around 3 or 4 and upped it to 6 and still have the problem. I know it isn't a needle or turntable issue because I get the exact same problem when just running the mp3's in internal mode. All my overviews are built.
I can live with the usb light if i dont get clips but this is getting out of hand. I almost felt like packing up in the middle of one of my gigs last night I was so frustrated with the clicks and pops.
I would like to try another usb port, but not sure how to install the driver for it. I have been using the exact same port since august of 05'. Could the port be worn out? I also tried a new usb cable but that did not fix anything. I use a pentium 4 Gateway 3.06 Ghz, 80gb hd, 512 MB RAM. This computer has been just fine as far as running serato. I have just had this horrible dropout issue the past 2 days. Before this I would get maybe a dropout every once in awhile but not enough to complain about.
Also do you have to have the Rane 57 to use 1.61? Is it recommended that all 1.5 users upgrade and use 1.61 or is it only compatible with the Rane 57?
I desperately need help. I rely on serato scratch for all my gigs. I DJ 5 nights a week and also do mixes in the studio and production and can't do anything with these dropouts happening. This is seriously frustrating!

Yes download 1.6.1, it's for regular SSL users and 57 users. It addressed several issues with 1.5.
About using the other USB port. It's worth a try. Just plug the SL1 in the other port and the new hardware wizard should pop up. If not you can install the driver from the device manager menu (Control Panel->System->Hardware tab->Device Manager). The driver will be in the downloaded 1.6.1 zip folder.

Did you try to raise the USB buffer far to the right?
Is this a laptop?

I did raise the buffer and still no help. I also just installed 1.6.1 and am still getting the dropouts. I believe they are even worse now in 1.6.1. This is a Gateway 3.06 ghz, 512mb RAM, 80gb HD. This laptop has not gave me any problems for the whole year I have been using Serato and I havent experienced dropouts like these until last night.

Is this really a P4? Can you say for sure it is not related to overheating or due to reduced CPU power?

Humm, it's seems strage to all of a sudden start doing this. Have you installed anything on the computer in the last week or so? Have you tried restoring the computer to an earlier time (if you have System Restore on)?
Do you know anyone else close that has SSL so you could try and plug their's into your computer and see if the same results happen, just to rule out a possible defect in your SL1?

My laptop was off all day today and been off since 2am last night. I wouldnt think it would be overheating as soon as I start it up. It is a P4. I don't have a lot of programs on my laptop. I pretty much use it for Serato only. I occasionally check email from wifi but I always have wifi off when I use Serato. What is this talk about apsci? or whatever about taking the battery out? Would this help? I guess there is a chance the fan could need to be cleaned. I dont know a lot about cleaning or taking the laptop apart though so I would have to leave that up to a professional.

I would definately try to clean your fan. It does seem odd that it would just start to run so crappy. I'll ask the same thing Konix asked, have you installed or downloaded anything that could have messed with your computer recently?

I haven't installed anything at all. In fact I just uninstalled a few things that have been on the computer since day one like Adobe Audition and AIM. I pretty much just use that laptop for serato and like I said the occasional email or website browsing.
Something weird I experienced last night was that when I would play a song that was stored on an external hard drive that didn't have overviews built and wasn't in my serato crates it seemed to work fine. but then when I would go back to something that was in my serato crates and also had overviews built I would get the problem instantaneously.
I just installed 1.6.1 and the dropouts are even worse and it is way glichier than the 1.5. I have had 1.5 on my comp since it came out so a couple months almost and havent had the problems. Should I try to go back to 1.4? And if I do so will I lose all my loops I created on songs in 1.5?

If you go back to 1.4 all the crates you created in 1.5 won't show up and 1.4 doesn't have the looping function so I wouldn't suggest doing that.

I put 1.5.1 back on and at first I had the same gliching. Then I tried a different USB port (one that has never been used on anything) and still get the problem. It is not giving me drop outs or gliches when I raise the buffer now but I have to raise it up to like 10 or higher. Then you cant really do much crossfader and scratching action. Does this mean its a CPU issue where the comp isn't running fast enough? I have yet to clean the fan I need to find a professional to do that.
Also I installed 1.5 over on my desktop and have the buffer rate set at 5 and nothing. Not a single dropout so it is definitely something with my laptop.

Have you run a checkdisk and defrag? It would make a big difference if it's badly fragmented. Also, how much free space is on your drive? If you have an 80gig drive and have been adding a lot of music and are low on free space this could contribute to poor performance as well.

YOu know I just ran a degrag and it said it was taking off a ton of shit like temp internet files and other things related to the net. I am restarting now so I will see if that works. As far as the hard drive space its 80gig and there is about 14 free gigs left. Is that not enough?

I just dont know whats causing the problems. I set my buffer to the far right and I still get dropouts and a few gliches. Not near as bad but still not able to DJ at the club or do mixes or anything with it like this.

i got bad dropouts when i started to use a external usb harddrive [laptop has no firewire port] but since i took the battery off i havent had another dropout and my laptop is extremely less powerful than yours. the only reason i think this might not fix your probelm is that your problem popped up randomly.

Try getting some air in a can and spraying it into your computer to see if that might free up some dust and allow your computer to run a bit better. If the drop out issue gets a bit better you will know to give the fan a complete clean up.

I have had an external hard drive for about a month and not had any issues. I get the dropouts and gliches whether I have the external hooked up or not. Talking to a tech on the phone now about getting a full cleaning.

VR,
Can you please re-run the RATT tool? Clear out your old log, and then run it again. Start up Scratch LIVE, and wait until you get some USB dropouts, and then stop the RATT tool and upload it.
I checked out the last one you uploaded, but it was running for quite a while, so it had too much data to make sense of it.
thanks!
Sam

Actually Sam and Zach I think I have fixed the problem. I had noticed that when I would start up the laptop the default windows music was kinda coming in choppy and when i plug different usb hardware devices in even that sound was choppy. All I can think of is that some sort of virus or spyware worked its way into my comp. It seemed like the processing was just working slow and bogged down.
I reformatted my laptop yesterday and reinstalled serato and my mp3's and it seems to be working better than ever. I am sorry for the posts and not knowing what could have caused it but I am just glad its fixed.
I plan to never run my wifi or connect this comp to the net again. I ended up using a cheap $298 Walmart E Machine desktop for serato over the weekend to get me by and I admit it worked like a champ. Whatever the problem was reformatting definitely fixed it and I am glad to say this issue is RESOLVED.
Thanks Rane & Serato!
