Anyone using a panasonic toughbook cf18?

c-j 7:22 PM - 19 June, 2006
Hi

Well after another laptop death I'm thinking - go rugged....

Thinking of getting a panasonic toughbook cf18:

Processor Speed: 1.1 GHz
Chip Type: Intel Centrino
Hard Drive Capacity: 40 GB
Memory (RAM): 1.256 GB

...Now obviously those specs look ok. But has anyone used one of these babies with SSL? How'd it go?

Or can any Serato staff advise?

cheers

One word of warning, the cf18 has a very small keyboard and screen, it is more of a tablet PC.
I can't fault the quality, we've got one at work and you can through it around, get it wet and it just carries on.

Have a look at the CF-74 which isn't quite as rugged but is more of a PC.

thanks KaGeN - Already did some searching.

Thanks Nobspangle - handy specifics....smallness was one thing I thought might be useful ie small footprint for squeezing in random dj booths.

I have a 12" laptop I don't think I would like to use SSL on anything smaller than that. I think the CF18 has a 10" screen.
Problem is they are quite rare so you are unlikely to find someone who has one and has SSL.

yeh it has a 10" screen

thanks for the advice

hmm - after sleeping on it I am still feeling interested....most gigs I play I have to shove the lappy somewhere I can't see it at a glance whilst spinning due to booth realities, so no visual references to speak of anyway... also it might be squeezable on a perch that is viewable in some of these situations because there is sometimes a little space where a smaller laptop might fit...

a display option where the long view overviews could be widened would be nice...maybe at the sacrifice of the spinning labels. Although I scratch I am primarily a mix dj. Would this be good in 1.6?

Well I went for it - and so far so good! Screen size is fine for me, and I actually like the classic SSL screen and am happy with it on this screen size.

Got it yesterday, had no time to optimise windows or anything....stuck SSL on and a couple of Gigs of music and played a 5 and a half hour set no sweat :)

....I'll keep you posted, but I think this baby is ideal for purpose.

Brand: Panasonic
Processor Speed: 1.1 GHz
Chip Type: Intel Centrino
Hard Drive Capacity: 40 GB
Memory (RAM): 1.256 GB
Screen Size: 10.6 inches
Features: 10/100 LAN Card, Modem, Operating System, USB, WiFi

Also once I get my setup fully sorted I will post in the wots everyone using thread.

Cool, c-j! :)

I would love to see some pictures, though :)
DJ_X_Trodinaire 1:40 PM - 24 June, 2006
yes pictures please

maybe a picture of dropping the laptop! lol kidding
c-j 9:54 PM - 24 June, 2006
hehe - yeh i dunno if I'm quite up for deliberately testing the dropzone on the lappy ;)

pics will come I'll have to work out how to post that shizzle tho.

thinkin of a peli case customised to hold lappy, serato, all leads, power supply, serato vinyl etc for that extra security, as a flightcase for the setup.

:)

Ez

This baby is running sweet at usb buffer 1 and a few of the recommended xp optimisations. Very tasty. Plus I can clear 3hrs running the scratchbox and lappy off the lappy battery alone - very nice and very handy. Maybe I can go longer with a few optimisations, laptop is very accomodating to power saving etc.

For those that wanted pics, there's a few links below.

hey guys, this is my toughbook setup...i didnt know anybody else had one of these badass laptops. been using it for more than 6 months in clubs and i must say the cf-18 is perfect in every way. these things are built like a tank and can take a beating with the exception that the LCD screen can crack if dropped directed on it. using ssl with touchscreen is very simple just "point and tap" and "drag and drop" your songs.
here are some pics...

Have you guys got the model with a touchscreen and XP pro, or the one with an active digitizer (have to use the pen) and XP tablet?
c-j 12:18 PM - 3 July, 2006
nice setup jlblaze80 ;)

I need to get me some sort of centre mount for my lappy at home someday.

My cf18 is with the tablet edition of XP (and active digitiser I believe). You have to use the pen.

Keep us posted with the performance of your toughbooks. It might be my next laptop purchase.

Now I DONT recommend this but I saw one in AFghanistan get dropped out of a truck and get run over by a HUMMWV and we stopped picked it up and back into the truck, and it was fine.
