MPG, MPEG, FLV, and AVI files will not play

DJ ELITE from Detroit 4:59 AM - 2 July, 2009
I have a problem. I have quite a few music videos ranging in formats from avi, mpg,mpeg,mpeg4 and flv. The only video files I have that play in SSL Video are MPEG4. None of the other files that are supported by Serato that I have will play. I am using a pc and the sl1. Any suggestions?
DJ ELITE from Detroit 12:57 PM - 2 July, 2009
anyone? According to the website ssl video supports these files. www.serato.com
tomatoslice 3:18 PM - 2 July, 2009
the first thing i would do is post in the help section.
www.scratchlive.net
what are your pc's specs?

you say "None of the other files that are supported by Serato that I have will play"...
do they just NOT play videowise? in other words, will the audio play?
are they even loading into serato?
DJ ELITE from Detroit 3:44 PM - 2 July, 2009
All of my mpeg4 videos play fine. My mpg, mpeg, avi, and flv files do not play at all. They will not even load into Serato. No audio and no video. My computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad T60, Intel T2500 2.0GHz , 2gigs of ram.

Dj Elite,

Can you check to see what codec is in the video file, even though we support those various file types, they may not load because of a unsupported video codec.
DJ ELITE from Detroit 9:41 PM - 2 July, 2009
The mp4's play fine.
avi, mpg, mpeg, and flv do not play at all. Here are some examples. All formats play in other video players with no problem. Is there any way to use these with serato?

AVI, MPG, MP4, FLV these are ALL container formats, not video encoding types.

For example, an AVI container could contain video encoded with Divx encoding, H.264 encoding, uncompressed video or just about any other type of encoding. An FLV file can contain at least Flash encoding or H.264 encoding or any format supported by the container type.

Simply looking at a file's extension will not tell you what type of encoding was used to create it.

My recommendation is to either get files that use H.264 encoding or create them yourself. If you are creating them yourself, you'll do best starting with high quality DVD originals.

What is the best solution for converting the codecs, if at all possible? Is there a batch file converter taht can do it? Recommend any software. Thanks
a-swift 10:06 PM - 2 July, 2009
well since you are on a PC, i don't have good recommendations for you. the PC users will chime in though.

"mpeg streamclip" is a decent pc and mac solution.
itchie 3:59 AM - 3 July, 2009
mediacoder is good for PC aswell. little tricky if you don't know about encoding.

Thanks again for the help. I am getting closer to solving this problem. By using mpeg streamclip I was able to convert some of the mpeg/mpg files to mp4 and they worked in Serato flawlessly. FLV files would not convert at all. I am having an issue with converting the avi files. It allowes me to convert them, but when I go to view them in any video player it plays this short earpiercing high pitch noise for a quick second and nothing else. The info below is the origional avi file before the conversion and then the avi file after the conversion. Has anyone had this problem before? Thanks.

Your keyframe avg is too high. You want aleast 1 keyfame every 30 frames. I personally like 1 every 15. That will def help with serato playback. And your time scale at the top is alittle funky.
a-swift 9:24 PM - 3 July, 2009
i use visualhub to convert FLV files. i hope you're not planning on playing these in public. the quality will look horrible.

Thanks again for the help everyone. I will see if I can adjust the keyframe avg in streamclip.

Word, if the quality is horrible I will not play them. I have enough good quality videos that play in serato to get me through a 5 hour set easily.

Mediacoder does a goog job converting the avi files, but the problem I am having is when they are exported as batch files is converts all the videos into one long ass vides. Is there a way to export them as individual files?

Most of that "conversion soft" that explains itself with way too much verbiage (usually written in "English as third language"/"Google translate" syntax) is crap-ware/scam-ware.

Bow down before the one you serve, you're going to get what you deserve.

Not that I really feel a whole lot of sympathy.

Handbrake (free) is usually the first choice for easy video processing.
It can convert most of video files to mp4 file with mpeg-4 codec
If that doesn't get you what you want then you can try AppGeeker Video Converter.
Assuming you want to convert your flv files, check the possible solution
www.ilikemall.com
These are all easy to use, and has built-in presets or make your own.
djnak 7:58 PM - 5 April, 2013
still wondering why you would wanna convert an flv to mp4.....you like muddy audio?

Since the original post was six years ago, I suppose that doesn't matter much.

Probably the best advice for anyone actually using flv files as source material for DJ-ing is to give your computer a heavy helping of sledgehammer.

Wow, I didn't catch that - I peeked in for the flames for using AVI and FLV files.

Why not convert the files to MP4 with handbrake?
Joshua Carl 5:48 AM - 30 June, 2015
Flv, why in god's green earth would ever even consider such a video abomination.

What's next, streaming real audio files to wav?
