drastic difference between number of message unread in a forum VS reality

just now, beta 1.9 area said there were 24 un-viewed messages. there was only 1 once I got into the sub-forum. This happens a lot

How many messages were in that thread with the unread message? 24 ish? Can you remember which thread it is?
