Add a Clock

yuri 8:55 PM - 29 November, 2004
I just saw the screenshot of TFS 2.0. They have a nice little clock up in the left corner. I think SSL should have the same.
nik39 8:59 PM - 29 November, 2004
Yuri, you are using windows, right? When I spin, I can see the clock and my toolbar at the bottom... Doesnt that work?
Revolutionary 9:02 PM - 29 November, 2004
Someone has already suggested this, but I agree, it could be useful.
Thundercat 9:12 PM - 29 November, 2004
The easiest answer to this is get any of the various freeware desktop clock displays that stay always on top. Frendly Clock ( www.kilievich.com ) is what I use.
yuri 9:21 PM - 29 November, 2004
Like I said, it should be built in. No need to add another component to my windows setup when it can be easily placed within the program.

My SSL takes my whole screen Nik, cant see the taskbar.. and wouldnt want to.
Revolutionary 10:07 PM - 29 November, 2004
That Friendly Clock got an ugly-looking font. Can you change it?
DJ.GAWK1 10:16 PM - 29 November, 2004
On a Mac, when an SSL user is in full screen mode, the desktop clock becomes hidden.

Clock idea is GENIUS!

thx yuri.
radish 10:25 PM - 29 November, 2004
Yup, like it too. How about an "end of set" countdown? Or is that just over the top?
Revolutionary 10:45 PM - 29 November, 2004
I still think you should be able to select whether you want to see it or not though.
Revolutionary 10:46 PM - 29 November, 2004
Just slightly over the top.
yuri 11:04 PM - 29 November, 2004
I think it might help make SSL look a little bit more professional too. At this point SSL is very nice but still lacks a bit in the interface department.
Revolutionary 11:08 PM - 29 November, 2004
Nah. The GUI is so nice, man. I love it. Instead of going NI-style with that pixelart, Serato has created an awesome look that stands out from the rest, man.
BassChamber 11:27 PM - 29 November, 2004
mmm IMHO SSL GUI has to be improved in some aspects.

SSL clock is a good idea, because every dj needs to know what time is it when spinning to the crowd. yes, we could use a watch, but we could spin real vinyls too!

True but a watch does quite weigh the same as several crates of vinyl :-)
FS-Sucks 5:16 AM - 30 November, 2004
Would you like it to send eMail as well?
Revolutionary 5:50 AM - 30 November, 2004
What about adding IMing to SSL? :)

Usefull idea!

My earlier sarcasm regarding eMail aside, the end-of-set idea is actually useful.

i never wear watches, they make my wrist itchy :P

i like SSL integrated clock idea...

Yes, with an 'end of set' count-down mode :)
Brandon Fisher (BLF DJ Supply) 1:57 AM - 1 December, 2004
clocks are nice. PCDJ uses one and its a nice feature.
chubbsta 10:19 AM - 1 December, 2004
I'd love a clock, since I always take off my watch when spinning. It hinders me when scratching, so I take it off...
DJ Yaz 10:50 PM - 1 December, 2004
A clock is a good idea! How about color coded reminders assigned to certain times. I often get carried away at the end my set and I'll forget to do last call for alcohol, or I'll cut the set late because I lost track of time. I could set an alarm on my watch but I would never hear it.

...And yes, I do wear a watch but when I spin but I am totally absorbed in what I'm doing as I'm sure most of you have experienced.
yuri 4:32 PM - 2 December, 2004
Hmm Im sorry but I think adding anything like a countdown to a clock is bad. Its just more bloat and room for errors.. I say keep it simple and add a simple display clock.

Managing your time is something that still should be done by the dj in my opinion. But displaying the time should be SSL :}
nik39 4:39 PM - 2 December, 2004
A clock is allready bloat to me ;-)
Even on my 1024*768 screen I can see the windows clock.
yuri 5:12 PM - 2 December, 2004
yes Nik but most people cant see the windows clock. Your setup is the exception, not the norm
nik39 5:22 PM - 2 December, 2004
Anyway, if its going to be implemented I would like to have this optional.
chubbsta 9:17 AM - 3 December, 2004
Also, Mac users can't see the clock, since SSL runs in full screen mode... Therefore: no menubar (incl. clock)
SpinThis! 4:00 PM - 3 December, 2004

not true. if you click the rightmost (green) maximise button, SSL will run in window mode, showing the menubar and also the clock.

if you like running in full screen mode go into the date and time system preferences and under clock, click on window. the clock window will float over everything and you can move it around and position it where you need it. if you need more control there's plenty of other 3rd party utilities for countdowns, etc.
feniks 4:11 PM - 3 December, 2004
agreed.....a seperate clock would simply be fluff and use up extra CPU. avoid the bloat!

i hate running ssl in window mode, the bright white of the menu bar is a distracting contrast to the dark colors of the ssl app.
DJ Phranque 9:44 PM - 3 December, 2004
guys...just buy a watch
DJ 3pm 9:47 PM - 3 December, 2004
i have a kick ass ssl usb wrist watch (check the rane store), but don't like wearing watch when i mix (scratches on the records and mixer face). i do like those cool clocks now that show the time by moving an arm back and forth real fast.
yuri 10:08 PM - 3 December, 2004
some of you just dont get it
Revolutionary 10:16 PM - 3 December, 2004
I use my PDA as a watch. It's pretty neat.
skutch 11:53 PM - 3 December, 2004
How about an official SSL big-ass Flavor Flav soap on a rope watch!

Aaaaaaah yeeeeeeaaaaaah booooyeeeee :)

I think yuri is onto something. SSL hides my clock when I run it, so I'm always forced to pull out my cell phone to check the time (haven't worn/owned a watch in 10 years). Doesn't look too professional... like I'm expecting a phone call in the middle of my set (which actually happened 3 times last night - LOL). $0.02 ;-)
Revolutionary 9:03 AM - 4 December, 2004
LOL. Hopefully your cellphone was set on silent?
I would love having a digital watch on my mixer. That would look awesome. This shouldn't be impossible though.
SpinThis! 8:25 PM - 4 December, 2004
silent? not sure how that helps you anyway. i dunno about you or your cellphone but it's hard to hear mine ring at all in a noisy bar/club even on the loudest settings.
Revolutionary 8:36 PM - 4 December, 2004
Well, it sort of depends on your style. I have my headphones on when spinning with SSL. I can easily hear mine even with my speakers at their loudest...
m0rph! 2:22 AM - 5 December, 2004
I only keep the celly on (1) so I can check the time, and (2) to answer imminent calls from friends who miss the guestlist cutoff time! Vibrate is king! :-P
Revolutionary 9:47 AM - 5 December, 2004
:) What would be awesome to have is a cellphone that flashed with the beat. Haven't Nokia made a phone like that?
JD 9:58 AM - 11 December, 2004
I find myself hitting Apple+ Tab while djing to see the time, then switching back to full mode... I DREAD the day I mistakingly hit Apple + Q... since theyre right next to each other...

Im for the clock idea for Mac users....

I am for the clock idea, too - But: this shouldn't be a problem, since SSL always asks you if you really want to quit, right? But: let us have a clock, please! (and, yes... I'm serious.)

Jeeeeeezus guys.... (OSX users)

You are asking for something you already HAVE!!!!
On OSX, you can put the clock in a floating window, with any degree of transparency. I just tested it to see if it stays visible when Ableton Live is in full screen mode, and it does, so I'm pretty sure it also stays on top when SSL is in full screen mode.

Just open 'date and time', click the 'clock' tab, and select 'view in window' in stead of 'view in menu bar'. Adjust transparency to taste with the slider.

Oops, SpinThis already mentioned this. Then what's all the fuss about? We already have a clock!
yuri 2:56 PM - 27 December, 2004
im glad you have a clock.. I dont.. thank you
nik39 8:17 PM - 27 December, 2004
Just a remark, SSL might glitch/hiccup if other apps try to redraw the screen, I have experienced this with the taskmanager, so from now on I make sure that SSL runs in full screen mode, and no other app tries to redraw anything on the screen, which means no clock from now on. So... some need a clock pretty bad in SSL (I personally still dont need it ;) )
