Retail vs. Educational FCP?

Ok, I have been trying to follow the best rendering route for video's for SSL. After trying Vegas 8. CS4, and other programs like hand brake, fmmpeg, etc. I have come to the conclusion from A-Swift's posts that FCP is the way to go. I have seen full educational versions of FCP Suite on Ebay. With the educational versions on ebay, they are around $500 cheaper then the full retail version of Final Cut Suite.
The only thing I notice is that they are not eligable for any upgrades. What would be some pro's or con's of getting the educational version off of ebay next to the $1200 version on apple.com?

(offtopic: since you mentioned it... is there also an educational version for Sony Vegas Pro?)

nik39, congratulations on your envolvement on the software you have displayed in A-Swifts FCP tutorial. I do not know of an educational version of Sony Vegas Pro, but i Have taken a laptop, and have reformated it twice to renew my 30 day trial version for use.
Vegas is awesome and super easy, but I have yet to see a render setting I have been happy with. And, since they have the motion program, & it is the industry standard, I think I should go with the FC Suite.
But I do have pennies saved for your program too Nik39.... is October still on the release date schedule?

Betow, I got the Logic Studio on academic pricing but then when Logic 8 came out, I could not upgrade so I ended up paying full price for Logic 8.
Now I'm totally against academic version. I'll never do that again.

It saves you a lot, but yes you can't do the upgrade to the next version and if you plan on doing any professional work, your files will be tagged Academic Version also. But if you're just doing videos for serato than that doesn't really matter. They are the same other than that.

the FCP Studio i got from Apple (via student discount) doesn't say anything on it or in it about being a student license. it's the same 90lb box that people buy at retail. my Adobe Master Collection I got from JourneyEd.com is Student Licensing and it says it all over it and comes in different packaging. luckily one of the disk was scratched and they send me a new copy NOT student licensing. SCORE.

Ok, so If I get this right, The Academic version is the same as the retail. Everything in the retail suite will be offered in the Academic version, the ONLY think that is the difference is there is no upgrade available on the Academic.
There is about a $400 to $700 price difference I have notices on ebay between the Academic and Retail. I do plan on using its compressor to get the cleanest looking videos I can for Serato. I already have FCP Express that i use for wedding Slideshows and misc. stuff.
What would be one reason I would want to go the other way, to purchase the full retail version instead if the Academic?
