syphon is a framework that allows one app to send video frames (full or stills) to another app in realtime.

apps that have syphon can send and/or receive video from other apps that have syphon. you can do some creative and amazing things because of this. an example, mix, scratch and backspin videos in sdj. send that video to vpt (a projection mapping app) and instead of projecting your video on a flat surface (or tv), its projected onto 3 spheres.

is there an example of syphon being displayed that you can show us? I get it I just want to see what it looks like

Hey DJ Chef212,

As Dj Nyce has detailed above Syphon is a Mac only framework which shares video or still frames between applications in realtime.

For a list of third party applications that support the Syphon framework check out this link; syphon.v002.info

All the best,

Anthony

Okay got it now how can it be used in serato video? Is there a video of "how" to do this in SDJ?

Hey DJ Tecniq,

If you follow the instructions on the Syphon website for installing Syphon Simple Client and Syphon Simple Server to begin with.

These are free and located on this link;syphon.v002.info

Open Simple Client the open Serato DJ and enable the Serao Video Expansion Pack by clicking the VIDEO Tab.

View the top left corner of the Syphon Simple Client where you will find;

Serato Video Output Deck 1
Serato Video Output Deck 2
Serato Video Output Post Mix as options.

Serato Video 1.2 starts publishing to Syphon as soon as the VIDEO tab is clicked.

Once a published stream is available in Syphon Simple Client any third party application that supports Syphon will be able to receive the published video stream.

As a side note this feature also works in OFFLINE mode with VIDEO enabled.

Thanks Anthony S for the info Im going to try it out.

Is it possible to use Syphon over network? I would like to send video using Syphon from my laptop to another computer which is connected via network.

you can using MaxMSP/Jitter. max has a method to send and receive. the frames will have to be compressed though. and you'll probably want a decent network switch/router.

you could roll your own using maxmsp or use this free one: cycling74.com

there is some camtwist concoction out there as well.
SeriousCyrus 3:51 PM - 28 March, 2014
I'm getting some strange behaviour on syphon output from serato dj, is it just me?

I put together a qtz file to test all the outputs, get it here.

dl.dropboxusercontent.com

it'll only run properly if serato DJ is your only syphon server, you can change the input with the published SyphonImage Input, 0 is left deck, 1 is right deck, 2 is output.

I find I keep losing the left deck image, while right deck and output function normally. Also the output seems very squished, I'm not sure it's an aspect ratio problem.

2048x2048 also seems pretty excessive for the previews, is it possible to control the sizes?

A post on the syphon forums suggests this might do it, I've not tested it personaly.

Thanks Nyce, I had a look at the Max solution but it seemed to be too complicated for me. :-(

This looks very simple to setup and use!! Thank you very much.

Do you know which language this tool has been written in? I read that it was inspired by some Java idea, and I would not trust a Java tool to compress and decompress video on the fly.
nik39 4:13 PM - 28 March, 2014
Wow... it is indeed completely in Java. I have to try this out, but I expect it to be using a lot of system resources.
nik39 8:59 PM - 28 March, 2014
It eats up a lot of resources indeed :( But that's also because it compresses the images. Unfortunately I could not get it working of the network, only locally - a pity. I have contacted the author by Facebook but who knows whether I will get a response. If he handles random requests and question like I do, then probably never ;)

However, I have found this tool now:

www.vjkidkadian.com

This links to a video showing the latency in a scientific way (haha) and a video showing how to configure this.

"Syphon2Network". No idea why I haven't found this earlier, but this is really good. It worked straight away, but also puts a lot of strain on the receiving computer. Not sure whether it uses TCP or UDP, hopefully latter, otherwise lost packets (for example due to congestion) will cause issues and hiccups. Sending 640x480 already uses around 75MB/s, so sending HD will not work. I assume it does not compress the video stream in anyway. This has it's pros (less strain) but also it's cons (more bandwidth usage). I wish it was configurable. It costs $10, well worth the money. A no brainer if you need syphon over network.

I am soooo glad that you guys helped me finding these tools, cause I have spend some considerable time a few months ago when I had to play at a location where they didn't have a video input, only a mac with M8 I think. As a result for not finding a solution via network (buying a video card was out of question) I had to play at the small floor where they had more simple equipment (VGA, beamer). :-/

Are you still having these issues with the published Serato Video streams ?

This is relative to your Serato Video Output setting, meaning the source video file is being rendered and scaled using the 2048 x 2048 pipeline.

If you change your Output setting the published Syphon Output for Left and Right Deck will reflect the square pixel aspect ratio of the rendering pipeline.

Medium 512 x 512

Syphon will respect the Serato Video Output Quality setting when you open Syphon.
To change the rendering pipeline of the published Left and Right deck output you will have to change the SV Quality setting, disable and re-enable Serato Video then open Syphon to respect the new Quality setting.

This will however affect the visual quality of your Mix Output also.

Just tried again and it seems to be working, I'll keep an eye on it.

OK cool, got it working at different resoultions.

One of the venues I play at weekly has a "video in" ethernet jack on the wall. No one there seems to know exactly how the video feed works but they found out that all they need to do is select a different input on the TVs. Would I be able to use this Syphon Virtual Screen ( andreacremaschi.github.io ) with Serato Video and send that video signal over the ethernet port on my MBP?

OR would an adapter like this be a more simple solution since it would be coming out of my video card? www.amazon.com I can't seem to find any mention of sending a video signal through this adapter anywhere, everyone only mentions sending data for file transfers.
My guess is that they are using ethernet cables and HDMI adapters to go into each TV instead of running long HDMI cables everywhere. I am only semi-knowledgable about this type of setup so any help would be much appreciated.
DJ.WAZZA.AU 8:28 PM - 13 February, 2015
All you need is Apple tv and a cat5-6 net cable
DjBliZz 8:35 PM - 13 February, 2015
Could you please expand on that?
DJ.WAZZA.AU 9:24 PM - 13 February, 2015
If it is a video in by net cable you run from you Mac by HDMI to a apple tv gen3 box and from the Apple TV box out by cat5-6 cable to the net plug on the wall

If all the tv in the club are run by its own network then you can run str8 out your network port on your Mac to the net plug on the wall and use the syphon to network app , to send your video feed

Excellent. Thank you.

Hello - I just installed Syphon Recorder on my MBP (OS X Yosemite 10.10.2) and configured according to the above.

Mixed videos records & plays back fine but no audio output. I have a NuMark NS7 controller running Serato DJ version 1.7.3. “Numark USB Audio Device” was selected for the audio input in Syphon.

Does any have any troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks in advance
