I use a DJ coffin, and I wish it was small enough to keep the box in back of the mixer.
That's all.
That's all.

i'd love if it were smaller too, as long as they don't abandon the metal (durable) construction. i'm not complaining about the current size one bit, though, things decently small as it is right now...

Smaller would be so much better. Does it really have to be the size it is? Or, perhaps, put all of the connections on one side and space them out so we can use 90 degree angled cables. This thing really takes up way too much space. The whole idea is to compact our DJ lives or we'd still be hauling around music. The way it is now it won't fit into either of my coffins, which means plugging and unplugging it at every gig. C'mon Serato/Rane. This box rocks! The technology is awesome! Now let's get into the present . . . Smaller Is Better!!

I also agree...all connections on one side, space them out to accomidate 90-degree plugs. Good ideas.

just cut some foam out of your coffin lay the box in the cut out.
place side strips around it so that when u lay the mixer down, it doesn't touch, and viola, you have an angled mixer.

I dont see a problem with the size, having opened it up ant taken it apart. maybe there would be a way of making the rcas one level high instead of two, but that might cause the pc board to be larger. if the box was thinner, even if not wider I think it would be less sturdy. right now its built like a tank, and probably changing the dimensions would make it less sturdy. I dont know enough about electronics but Im going to assume that more miniaturisation would bring the price high, and bring the stability down. I mean I open allot of electronic shit for the hell of it, and if I were going to point to anything ever as nearing what feels like perfection I would point to that box. I mean there is a reason that there has been only twenty defective joints, ever. how many phones have you had personally that failed in some way? I like it how it is.......

A little background on the size of SL1: it's mostly based on keeping the electrically noisy digital and power-switching circuits away from the sensitive audio circuits. This is complicated by the requirement for isolation between the computer audio circuits and the turntable circuits. (Unlike certain competitors' products, SL1 includes this feature to break groundloops that cause hum and buzz.) Anyhow, you put all these requirements together with the sizes of the required parts, as available in 2004, and you get the SL1 size.

lol. funny and true click. I had a big problem fitting the ssl box in a coffin. I had to really stuff it in there. I also had to fit in a 240 gig external hard drive. Djs are the ultimate packers and movers. we make stuff fit.

try back in the day when we loaded the van...
man, a novice couldn't pack half of the stuff we packed into the van (speakers (bass and highs), amp and component racks, turntable cases, a record crate*S*, and 6-8 people)...

Nice info, Paul--thanks! So, I suppose accomidating 90-degree plugs and the like would just make the thing bigger and bigger, eventually resembling the UFO that the FS2 box is. ;)

I was looking at 'mixed' whatever, and I noticed it works without a dongle, all u need is a sound card.
Why doesn't SSL2 use the following design? I mean a sound card like that Echo Indigo IO that inserts into your lab top, but also records with quality. This eliminates the box, but keeps the dongle.

Cool idea no?

I had that card. I was great stuff, only it heated up the notebook to much and the card wil me a lot bigger (i.e. longer and thicker). Also, it's a bad idea for people who use a desktop and need to invest in a PCMCIA card slot.
I like the external design of SSL: it's (ultra) rugged (PCMCIAs aren't) and you don't see all those wires sticking out your laptop.

I agree with the "get a 57sl" idea... but it only has two channels and i love my 3 channel mixer 1) in case of an emergency 2) if i want to throw a third song in the mix
