Hi all, long time user. First time poster. I own and operate a bar in Long Beach, NY. I admit I am a tech geek that is totally into all things tech related. Which leads me here.
I am an ex promo only video supscriber, I used to have the DVD01 with the Video Mixer and screens....man that was horrible stuff. No beat mix possible, no way to really Dj while playing the video. I sold it all.
Got into Scratch Live and in honestly took me from a dying DJ bored of the gigs and music, to a newly inspired DJ who just loved DJing again. It was like a fire inside. TO be able to mix anything together and so fast was like having 3 hands. So sick.
Now heres where I stand.....I am still into the video idea. I loved the way the place looks with the videos up and my bars logo poping across the screens. BUT I cant seem to get a clue as to how this VIDEO SL works. I go to countless stores IN NYC and they all have the ttm 57 but no one is running video.
I talk to DJ friends (who are like me Thinking of buying VSL)and they have mis info based on what I am able to view on you tube. Some say the video SL comes with a second interface box..... I think I have disproved that.
I see alot of youtube videos of folks doing VSL, do they like it?
Are they pissed they bought it?
I already was mad once with Video equiptment, I dont want that to happen again.
Heres the questions I have.
1. is it worth it? will VIDEO Sl strike up a fire in me the way scratch live did.
2. is there a place in NY or a person willing to come do a Video GIG and show me at my place. I will pay....I am a resercher I like to see things before I buy them.
3. how will I (after signing up again) get my Video Promo Onlys to work in scratch live. Is that what you all do?????I do see the forums and have signed up for 8th wonder....are they compadible with VSL??? i see smashvidz...is that a DVD service or DL file like 8thwonder......
Im lost.
any help is appreciated

I will not and have not gotten into remixes. Not to many accapellas under my belt. I am a simple give em what they want, kind of DJ. Play in a night from
I wanna dance with somebody to Heartless, Livin ur Life, to THATs Life.
My place has 23 50inch LCD screens. Outta my booth i hit em all by going to the Video input on the TV's

Hello Timdell,
I moved this thread to the VSL general discussions section so you can get some input from VSL users since your questions are geared more towards them as opposed to a help question with the product itself:)

to answer some of your questions from my own experience....
"1. is it worth it?"
yes
"will VIDEO Sl strike up a fire in me the way scratch live did."
yes... I have been doing video like this for about 4 years... first with Virtual DJ and now with Video-SL. I can't see myself doing nothing but video now.
"2. is there a place in NY or a person willing to come do a Video GIG and show me at my place. "
I live in Las Vegas... you can fly me out and I will show you everything you need to know.
"3. how will I (after signing up again) get my Video Promo Onlys to work in scratch live."
There are several ways about this. Basics are ripping the DVD's and putting the videos into mp4 (h.264) video format. Lots of guides and people with experience here with that. Just do a search on this forum.
"I do see the forums and have signed up for 8th wonder....are they compadible with VSL???"
yes... all of the videos from that site along with SmashVidz are downloadable and already in mp4 video format ready to go.
hope that helps some.
send me a private message if you are serious about having me fly out to demo it for you.

Timdelll,
I'm a video editor who just moved to Brooklyn and started using Video SL over the summer. I had never even used Scratch Live before (I was DJing for years with Ableton), and so I can relate about how inspired you got starting out on Serato. Using video with it would impress you even more. So it's worth it.
I can help with questions about how to spec out your system, encode your Promo Only files (my current settings: www.scratchlive.net ), and create logo movies. I've spent the last couple months obsessing about finding the best workflow for getting all this done on a Mac. I could also put together a set of logo videos you could use as transitions, scratch tools, or as a video loop that can play when you want to hear a song that doesn't have a video available. And of course I could come out and play a set.

Hi Tim
I'll try to answer your questions here. You can hit me up on AIM if you wanna talk about it more. My username is djwoody714.
Hope this clears some things up.

Video SL does not require a second interface. However, it does require the TTM57.
Hell yeah it is. My rates have gone up since I started doing videos. Not only that, but people actually do see them. At first I thought they didn't, but now more and more people come up to me and request videos. I will definetely spark a fire in you. With Serato, it's just like normal DJing except your songs have video to them.
Sorry, I'm in LA. Fly me and I'll teach you! haha
You can rip (Mac The Ripper)all your Promo Only DVD's on your iMac and then re-encode (Visual Hub) them to MP4. That's what I do. If you do want to use a video service, Smashvids is great. From what I hear, they have all the new stuff already Serato ready and with extended. Don't hold me to it since I never subscribed, but I know people that have.

buy 2 pioneer dvj-x1s if you want to put on a professional video show. if you just want to fool around with video i guess VSL is good for home use and possibly very light club use

DVJ's are dope and a lot guys that use them are very good at what they do. Personally I think, TURNTABLE's bring a different feel and allure to being a DJ, from an industry and customer base standpoint.

I totally agree with the DVJ comment, after using DVD's I know how slow they are to load on Numarks gear. I imagine DVJ's are faster but no way as fast as VSL. I have two shows with VSL under my belt. I am sold its the best program I have ever used. Incorperating Youtube video of my clubs town into the mix, shadowdancers, laser light shows all of my screens for free off you tube......so sick.
Buy all the DVJ's you want chief, your not at full capacity till your rocked a TTM57 and VSL.

I was all but retired when video came out on SLV. This is what got me going, I saw a few mixes by Twizzle and a few others then I saw re-mixes from Phat-Al, A-Swift then I was like ,,,man how creative can a DJ be with this shit. With new features being added about every six months how could you go wrong. Converting videos sucks but as mom said no pain no gain. The learning curve is all but none if you understand the concept of SL. I say go for it or hire one these guys from these forums. If you get Phat-Al to come you better pack the house you want to get your moneys worth, on the flip side he might be so good that you will have to move him to NY. If you see some one that is good it will only inspire you to do your thing... Ohh oh you will be mixing you just don't know it yet. Good luck..
