Recording wax on the 57

Hi all
just a quick question about recording...
Using pre a i usually set the gain on the mixer so it just touches the red very occasionally but am i meant to be looking at the vu on the actual mixer or the one on the serato screen ? I can crank the gain pretty much up to +9 looking at the screen and it will still just touch the red whereas if im looking at the mixer leds they max out at about +7.
Ive never noticed any clipping or distortion so far but is the mixer automatically reducing the volume at the peaks of my recordings ?

Keep an eye on the LEDs within SSL. It's OK for them to peak in the red, but, if they're full-tilt red, it might sound like crap :)
