I'd like to get any feedback, because I'm on the verge of purchasing the 56, and the SSL box...or should I wait for the 57?
I'm new to the forum, and any response would be great.

Welcome ...
AT this point I'd wait for the 57 ... It will be a painful and trying time but it willbe worth it.

56 and the box. You can't take you're mixer to most clubs. Just doesn't work out. Very cubersome. With SSL atleast you can hook it up relatively easy at most clubs.

If you can afford it, the 57 and the box, that way you have the best of both worlds, a lot of the functionality the 57 provides seems much more at home in the studio to me.
When the 57 comes out, maybe the price of the 56 and SSL will drop.

Thanks for the feedback...
I've noticed from the literature on both 56 and the 57...that the 57 does not have:
-mode switches,
-individual contour switches (i.e. CONTOUR A, CONTOUR B on the front of the mixer,
-wet/dry pan
Are these features on the 56 more beneficial when scratching?
That's why I'm kinda leaning towards getting a 56 instead of a 57.

In all honesty, I have never found those, contour A/B |Wet/dry |Mode features very useful, Just nice to have.
The mode particularly is very confusing till today as to what it's supposed to do. Take a hint, I imagine Rane/Serato felt the same way and left those out. The 57 mixer should still be the same quality product.
Maybe a poll on who actually uses those features can shed some light as to their usefulness.

Check it- if you own a 56, and screw up your mixer for some reason, you mess up your mixer. If you own a 57, and screw up your mixer for some reason, you mess up your effects unit, your SSL Box, AND your mixer. I opt for the separte components, strongly.

If you have the loot, cop the 57 and SSL external. If not, I would go for the 56 and SSL separately, for the reasons stated by my predecessors. You will be very very very pissed if you are used to spint with SSL and you cant bring your own mixer to the club, cause then you are basically s-c-r-e-w-e-d.

If you are gonna do a lot of mobile's as well as clubs get the 57 and SL1. You want the least amount of gear when doing a mobile.
Light and well, mobile. Then you can take you sl1 to the club when you need to.
If you are just gonna do clubs then get the SL1 and a 56. that way you can leave all your stuff setup at home and just pull your sl1 out.

Have you seen homepage.mac.com ?

I was a big fan of reason -- the box rather than the mixer, because of 'the breakdown issue' (If the output volume knob on your mixer goes you have no SSL).
But, I had to throw reason out the window when I saw this vid. It has effects, you can toggle trough your crate and control SSL -- cue points, looping -- from your mixer, Dude, that is the ishalish!
Maybe later I will get the SSL box, but the 57 is the machine of 06 and 07!

I'll have the 57 (when it comes out) and the SL1. Use the 57 for mobiles and use the SL1 in the clubs.

Hello, I am glad to see someone started this thread. I have an additional question, for recording LP's to digital format, which one would you choose between these three options
1. Rane TTM 56 and SSL
2. Rane TTM 57
3. Rane PS 1 and a good sound card in a computer
I've seen that there has been previous discussions about recording LP's, but I was wondering if with the introduction of the TTM 57, that maybe this would be the most 'direct path' for recording a LP. I would like to have the option of either using SSL either with the TTM 57 or the combination of the TTM 56 and the external SL1 with old school SL1200MK2 turntables or using CD turntables and no SSL (i.e. for the times where maybe SSL or the TTM 57 was not available. I guess there is still some question as to what quaility of a wave file or MP3, or etc. is the most versatile format for different uses.
Oh, and one other question - what software would be best to use for 'breaking up' a continous wave or MP3 into individual tracks?
I'm new to the forum and I have a few LP's that I need to rip to a digital format before getting some CD turntables and / or a TTM 57 or SSL. (I already have a TTM 56 and two 1200's).
Sorry for the long post.

I use option 1 sometimes but mostly a Stanton 80 something turntable Direct drive with line level out puts plugged into a Mbox. Software soundforge pro. There are others that will do what you want.
Works well, I only use protools for remixes. Everything else I do in soundforge ven 8 bar treatment for when I want to be lazy hehe.

I use a Stanton turntable (with line outs) connected to a Gemini iKey to transfer vinyl to a USB drive.

I'm with Righteous on this one. Keep all my components seperate. That way, if something happens to one, the others still work (or not stuck with a device that only half works). Same reason a prefer a component system for home audio. nokia cell that is just a phone(no camera, or mp3 player).
That's my word.

Remember folks this is Rane we are talking about, how many times has anyones 56 broken down or SSL unit?
I can live with those odds and have everything in one package.
The Laptop or Hardrive would worry me much more than Rane hardware. .

k. So the chances of a hardware failure are low. So about user mistakes. e.g. Beer spilled, unit dropped, etc... Now instead of having to only replace one broken device, two must be replaced.
That's my word.

No doubt it happens, I was playing at a New Year's party about 4 years ago. After midnight a girl who was very drunk , tried to open a Champagne bottle. Notice I said tried, she got that crap all over my system. I turned off the mixer right away and the party was over. The mixer was a Numark SM-1. I let it dry and still works. However at the very next gig I blew my speakers. I trust the Rane gear to take the abuse, but it’s risky having too many things incorporated (one reason I don’t like dual bay cd players). Just MHO.

BTW, I would still get the 57 less equipment to deal with. (if a Numark took a spill and still works, I'm positive a Rane will survive it without a flinch).

That is true. Replacement will dent the wallet some. But think about this ...
We carry a laptop to the gig. Should some sucker spill alcohol onto it, the whole thing is fried. Is it not better to haul a PC, Mouse, Keyboard and Monitor with you?
If there's a spill on the keyboard you will only need to replace it ? Or just the display should it break ...

my 2 cents - SL1 and 57. I bring my own mixer to most every gig, so the 57 will be swell, but if the venue has a permanent install mixer and no way to swap in the 57, I will have my SL1 box in my bag (I am ordering one of those Headliner DJ bags with a laptop compartment, room for you cans, cartridge case, SL1, cables, and about 30 vinyls, too).

You can already do this with a lil workaround:
PGM1 = left deck = cross fader to left, channel fader up = Main Out
PGM2 = right deck = headphone cue monitor to the right
Workaround.
It should be easy to do from the software to route the left channel to FlexSend and right channel to any aux/main/booth out. I will suggest this in the feature suggestions.
