Beginner's DJ Dillemma

TjDaDj 8:02 AM - 21 May, 2013
Right now I have a xone dx and have 2 small problems for it. 1 the direct input jack no longer works and 2 the jog wheels suck. I was wondering if i should sell it and opt for the vestax vci-300/400. I can only go $600-$700 price range. Also I need another laptop. Is the lenovo ideapad z580 with 2.5 ghz, 6 gb ram, and 500 gb free space ideal? Also some new dj light recommendations would be great.
dj_soo 9:50 AM - 21 May, 2013

A macbookpro is ideal.

If ur gonna go with a controller in that price range then yeah... vci 380 or vci 300 mk2.
TjDaDj 11:28 PM - 21 May, 2013
^ I would love to get a mac but don't have the funds for that. This laptop is on sale for half the price yet still exceeds the necessary specs whilst being a quad core i5. So i looked at the vci 380 and it is "ac powered and not usb powered" what does that mean? Will it have a usb cord at all?
Dj MacMillz 12:23 AM - 22 May, 2013
The USB will be included, AC powered means that it's powered by a wall plug.

The USB is to transfer data to/from the controller.

1. practice
2. practice
3. practice
4. don't put up mixes before you think they sound good.
5. if you need someone else to tell you that you sound good because you don't know yourself then see #1 - #3.

I don't understand all these n00bs that are putting up all these shitty mixes and videos 3 weeks into getting their cheap pos controller. It's like picking up a guitar for the first time last week and then thinking you're good enough to play at a venue.
dj_soo 4:17 AM - 23 May, 2013
#6 - don't call yourself xxxx "productions" when you can't even dj yet. Learn to dj first before trying to name yourself and for the love of god, learn to dj before you post shit online or try to find gigs.
TjDaDj 4:23 AM - 23 May, 2013
^ I have done gigs before and had the equipment for about a year. I do know the basics and have been PAID TO DO THIS BEFORE. All went well. I was just getting the wrong feedback because most people like what I put because they aren't pro djs themselves. I mean its not like I'm djing for a club or anything but I want as much help as possible. Why not post videos? thats the best way for people to criticize me. SMH you guys are harsh lol. How was my first freestyle mix? Watchwww.youtube.com
dj_soo 4:54 AM - 23 May, 2013
You obviously dont know the basics otherwise you wouldnt have posted that "mix" online.

It was terrible and if you had any knowledge about Djing, you would have known right away it was garbage.

If you can't identify the problems even in the first 30 seconds, of your mix then you aren't ready to share your Djing with the public.

Listen to real djs play and figure it out. Djing isn't rocket science.

depends how much practice and effort you put in on it.... could take few weeks to sound decent a couple of years... maybe never. yes i have herd of "vetern djs" who still sounds crappy but they are full of themselves. what will really make you better is checking out the djs you like and of course listening to your own mixes and actually admitting to when it sounds bad or not. trust you ears. they are the most powerful piece of djing equipment you can get.

If say the majority of regulars on hear have been Djing for longer than you've been alive and most are doing fully professionally for a living.
DJ Reflex 5:34 AM - 23 May, 2013
I first started DJing at a roller rink in 1992. One chick came up to me while I was "mixing" and told me I sucked and requested that I just play the songs - don't try to blend them together.

I was a bit disappointed, but I was motivated to learn the tricks and practice. I would come in on my off time before the rink opened and practice. In about a month, I was rocking the decks and the same girl came up and complimented me on the party mix that night. A bit of hard work paid off and I've been slammin' beats ever since.

Funny thing is - after 20 years, in the biz, I STILL PRACTICE!

TjDaDj, you want to see good youtube videos? Check out DJs that rock crowds and learn from their techniques. DMC competition footage will get you some scratching sets, Jazzy Jeff will get you music selection, and DJ AM will get you mixing skills. These are just a few.
TjDaDj 5:51 AM - 23 May, 2013
^This is exactly what I need. See I love djing so far and I myself thought I was good for a rookie. Can you guys agree with at least that? No one tells me I'm bad when I go do gigs so I came here. At least I have the guts to post- even to be replying to such harshness on this forum. I couldve rage quit right now (most people would) But I know itll only make me stronger. I gotta admit, youtube and FB offer almost immediate response that was not available 10-15 yeas ago. When most of these guys on this forum started, we had to record our mixes on cassette and pas them around to friends for review. New cats (like you) are able to mass transit your work and post it to anyone/everyone. The trouble with that is most people have no clue what is good and what is not.

You ever watch American Idol? All those losers who get rejected all THOUGHT they could sing because their parents and friends hyped them up so much that they honestly thought they were good. It came as a shock to them that they really couldn't sing and then you see the tears and all the shattered dreams after the auditions!

You got a shot in this, but you got to know what is good on your own before you spread it to the masses. Most of your buddies, your girlfriend, your mom... they will all compliment you work for two reasons: a) they don't want to hurt your feelings or b) they don't have a clue what sounds good. Here on this forum- you will get scrutinized for what it really is. I saw your videos... they were not good. If youtube was available when I first started, I'd probably be in your same boat. Maybe us veterans lucked out that way. We HAD to get good first, then spread our mixes to the masses. It seems that younger DJs have that backwards these days.

Here are some links to get you started:
www.dancefactoryfm.com Listen to the mix shows when you can.
Watchwww.youtube.com Good mixes.

dj_soo 6:10 AM - 23 May, 2013
You got your reception although it may not be what you wanted to hear - instead of arguing about it on the Internet,, maybe you should be practicing instead?
DJ Reflex 6:14 AM - 23 May, 2013
Well, at least your dad has some sense. Kudos to him.

Did you read my post?
Quote:
Isn't that the way to go?
NO. Not being mean, but you got to review your work FIRST, then you can post it for critique. Just curious... how many time did you listen to your own mix before you posted it? Did you at least sit through the whole video and note some areas that you could have had better transitions between songs? Where your beats were not aligned properly? Where you mixed through the vocals?

I suggest that you record your mixes (like you have), but before you post them, give them a week. After a week, go back and listen to them again. Have a notepad in hand and jot down any spots where you feel weren't up to par. Do this at least 2-3 times. DO NOT post a mix without these steps first. Trust me, you will catch a lot of mistakes on your own before it even gets published.

Again, I don't think you're oblivious. I just think that you are too young to know that posting a crummy youtube video on a professional DJ forum is a backwards way of getting better.

dj_soo 7:17 AM - 23 May, 2013
that won't teach you to dj, but that will give you what could be a very cool career option in media arts.
TjDaDj 7:22 AM - 23 May, 2013
^My mom mentioned it. I told her however that the best way to do it is just practice with another dj and do some gigs (even if i get booed every now and then). Would it be smart to find a dj school or to just practice on my own?
dj_soo 7:29 AM - 23 May, 2013
do yourself a favour and stop taking gigs, stop posting videos and take a week to download and just listen to good mixes online from good djs. Don't surf the net, or play video games, or play on your phone, or read a book, or anything. Put on the best headphones in your house and sit and do nothing but listen. Listen to one mix a day and just listen. Listen to what the dj is doing and listen for how they're doing it.

Then go back and listen to that mix you posted again.

Then write down everything you think you did wrong - mistake by mistake.

If you still can't hear a difference between what good djs are doing and what you're doing, then maybe you need a proper teacher but that still won't guarantee that you "have it."
TjDaDj 7:37 AM - 23 May, 2013

Dear TjDaDj,

In an ideal situation, you would stay in the bedroom, and continue to be enthusiastic about DJing for years while honing your skills. Then you would emerge, and post decent mixes and begin DJing at clubs or bigger events.

Except thats almost never, ever, ever how it happens. This is really applicable to most anything in life, and largely depends on what kind of person you are. Most people who try to do that burn out or just plain lose interest. I 'started DJing' at the age of 14 when my cousin locked himself in the bathroom of a big club with a bag of Burger King, and went, 'You mix for a while'. I sucked, and some customers visibly complained both to me and the club. Earth-shattering big deal? No, not really. I was nervous, and I was pissed at myself for sucking so bad. It inspired me to begin DJing, and a year later I was playing twice a week at a decently-sized club. Does anyone remember how horribly I sucked at Sabor Latino 10 years ago? No.

Enthusiasm is key, because enthusiasm will get you to practice hard. And it should ALSO keep you investigating every single possibility of getting better, which is part of what you're doing when you post here asking these questions.

Be humble about things. Don't be serato.com . You're *not* going to be good when you start out, and thats fine. Acting like a big-shot is going to get you tossed out of clubs, ridiculed online and in general leads nowhere, unless you can live up to it. So be careful about the way you present yourself. And realize that every time you introduce yourself to someone, they might remember how you are in that exact moment; so if you re-approach the person later, you might be at a disadvantage if you blew the introduction. Lastly, take everything on these forums with a grain of salt.

Have fun, practice a lot and manage the resources and possibilities you find surrounding you well. Strive to be awesome, but don't fall into the trap of thinking you're hot-stuff until you know better ;)

At the very least, you'll give some of us something to laugh at if your mixes are really poor :) Best of luck!

this is the guy you want to build a relationship with and follow around, so you can observe everything he does, and learn the craft.

i was 17 when i started djing, i used to slide the bouncers $20 to let me into the clubs... and the whole night, i would stand next to the dj booth watching everything the dj did. eventually, after a couple weekends, they noticed me staring at em the whole night (yeah i know, sounds like stalker mode...lol) and they introduced themselves to me, and i told them i wanted to be a dj and learn from the best.... next thing you know, i got an invite to show up to the club early and help them carry in crates of records and gear.... so at that point i didnt have to slip the bouncer $20 anymore to get in.

so you def want to find somebody local that you can observe and teach you the right way to do things. but for right now, youtube and Serato forum are gonna be your best friends.

they are inspire by it i agree..... i am talking about the straight serato look a like skins those are ban on vdj... but there are some that share similarities... i honestly can't stand Djs who use vdj but cover up vdj with a serato skin!!??? the fuck is the point of that??? personally i don't like the serato skin. but people go crazu over a serato skin mean while vdj runs in the background. HYPOCRITES i say but what do i know....
